“I asked Peter (Monday at YSC) what was going on and he didn’t let me talk. He started to get mad at me, telling me that I was very not respectful to leave Bolton early. I told him, ‘First, I respect myself.’ But I always did everything they asked me to do. I came from vacation in the Dominican Republic for the Bimbo (sponsorship) announcement. I always was respectful. … It was like he was saying, ‘I don’t know if I can trust you on this team.’ “I would be happy to just retire than play for Peter again."
~ Sebastien Le Toux

Wowzer. There is a lot to this story but man that line at the end really jumps out at you. This was such a sticky situation – at least for Le Toux it was.

“I don’t know how long it stays like that," he said. "I think at some point most of the players in our league will come out of academies but that might be 10 years from now, 20 years from now. For now I think we’re still going to get the majority of our player pool from the draft and the international player market.”
~ Don Garber, MLS Commissioner

So 10 to 20 years huh? Interesting. One has to hope that the academies can really do what we all think they will and be the main source of talent for teams. It’s working – slow and steady – we just have to remain patient with it.

"It’s simple math: 389 games would almost be impossible for us to execute with the other competitions we’re required to play, the weather issues we have … the challenges in a handful of markets, the FIFA dates," he said. "All the thing we have to do differently in the United States from a competitive standpoint, just the travel impact that exists in our country."
~ Don Garber, MLS Commissioner

No balance in the 2012 schedule for MLS. Can’t say I am shocked to hear this news today from Don Garber. I know folks won’t like it but they’ll have to live with it – for now.

...the trainer instead asked him his name, the score of the game and to count backward from 100 before telling him he doesn't have a concussion and sending him back into the game.
~ Taylor Twellman on his concussions

Man, when I first read this I was totally shocked, then I was totally angry. Part of the reason why I had to really stop playing competitively was because of concussions. Thankfully I didn’t have a team doctor that treated my injury like this. Twellman went on to explain in the article that he was seeing…[continue reading]

Without going into a lot of details, there's a lot of water gone under the bridge now with our decisions that have been made, choices that have come about, working environment and personalities. And listen, I wouldn't say it was totally Paul's fault that we don't get on. There has to be two sides to that story. The reality is that when people don't work together well, you tend to miss out on certain things. Things fall through cracks.
~ Gary Smith, Colorado Rapids head coach

At one point this season I thought about having Gary Smith on my coaching hot seat list but a midseason turnaround kind of killed that thought for me. Turns out, we could be close to him leaving Colorado anyways. He and TD Paul Bravo are apparently not on the same page these days. In a…[continue reading]

I think it's what, seven teams that are still in the hunt. I think our playoff format has been very exciting. "I know we got a lot of criticism for adding our play-in games, but at the end of the day, pro sports in America are driven by the excitement of their playoffs leading into a championship game. Having that, experiencing that with MLS this season, I'm very excited for it. i know our fans are; our television ratings are going up, so I think that speaks for itself.
~ Don Garber, MLS Commissioner

Gotta love how he dances around the issues with the new playoff format. Again Don, it isn’t the amount of teams it is the format itself. It just isn’t good enough. The new format makes it competitive for many teams, sure, but does it make for a better MLS Cup at the end when the…[continue reading]

I don’t really know a lot about those things.I don’t think it really surprises anyone because he is such a good player. I’m sure there are other players on our team that those type of conversations occur. Right now, Brek is part of FC Dallas. We’re looking for Brek to be a continuing part of FC Dallas, so for us to talk about transfers, it’s really a waste of conversation.
~ Schellas Hyndman, FC Dallas Manager

I saw this quote over on Buzz’s site (3rdDegree.net) about the whole Brek Shea rumor situation. I’m like most down here in Dallas that cover the team, you know Shea will get sold eventually to a club overseas but it won’t be anytime in the immediate future. Yes, he’s doing well on the National team…[continue reading]

There's a lot of factors in it, including whatever our terms are here, which right now are very poor and have to be improved. From an expense standpoint, we have the worst stadium deal in the league.
~ Kevin Payne, DC United's CEO

We know the DC United stadium situation isn’t getting any better anytime soon but at least they’re being blunt about trying to fix their current lease with RFK Stadium.

“I, for one, am a supporter of it. We’ve gotten to the point in our league where our fans on short notice would support their club and attend a championship game even if they had only two or three days to buy tickets for that match. Years ago we wouldn’t have been able to contemplate that when we weren’t convinced the support was there to sell out a stadium for a championship game. Now I have no doubt we could. I think it’d be fun for the fans. I’m a big proponent of it. Although there is no timeline on a potential change in the format for the title match, Garber did hint once more that the new league schedule for 2012 – which he said would be released a lot earlier than last season -- will likely not be balanced and instead the league may adopt a format that “can take advantage of a number of key rivalries.”
~ Don Garber

Higher seed hosting the MLS Cup? Sounds like it could be a real possibility when you hear MLS Commissioner Don Garber talk like this. My bet, it happens when the league gets to 20 clubs but who knows, maybe it will happen this year.

"Everyone has to make their own decisions as they relate to those things. For me, if my team's in a competition I'm going to go to the game with them, no matter what the team is that I send down. ... For me, not traveling with the team I think would be disrespectful to the competition that you're competing in and to the opponent that you're playing."
~ Sigi Schmid, Seattle Sounders FC head coach

Saw this quote from Sigi Schmid in regards to Colorado Rapids manager Gary Smith staying at home this past week for the Rapids CCL trip to Honduras. Can’t say I disagree with this either. Even though the Rapids won their game, the head coach should have made the trip. It will be interesting to see…[continue reading]
