Unlike previous years the final week of the regular season isn’t going to decide who gets into the playoffs and who doesn’t, but it will decide who will play who in the first round starting next week. New York punched their ticket as the eastern conference regular season winner and will get one of the four western conference wild card in return.

Speaking of the Red Bulls the turn around there from 2009 to this year has to be mentioned for a moment. The fact that Hans Backe and company went from worst to first in the east is pretty remarkable considering how bad that club was a year ago. Sure adding a couple high profile guys like Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez doesn’t hurt but for once this organization got smart with their coaching and front office hires and it looks like for a change this club will be stable going forward.

Like New York or not they are a club that will be annual contenders from now on I believe.

Now as far as week 30 goes, a lot will be decided. Below are the following playoff scenarios going into this week:

SUPPORTERS’ SHIELD RACE

LA will finish WEST #1, RSL will finish WEST #2
• If LA defeats DAL
• If RSL loses to COL
• If LA ties DAL AND RSL ties or loses to COL

RSL will finish WEST #1, LA will finish WEST #2
• If RSL defeats COL AND LA ties or loses to DAL
• If RSL ties COL AND LA loses to DAL

MLS CUP PLAYOFF SEEDINGS

DAL will finish WEST #3
• If DAL defeats LA
• If DAL ties LA AND SEA ties or loses to HOU

SEA will finish WEST #3, DAL will finish WEST #4
• If SEA defeats HOU AND DAL loses to LA
• If SEA defeats HOU by 11 goals or more AND DAL ties LA

SJ will finish WEST #4, SEA will finish WEST #5 (EAST #3)
•If SJ defeats KC by 2 goals or more AND SEA ties HOU

SJ will finish WEST #4, COL will finish WEST #5 (EAST #3), SEA will finish WEST #6 (EAST #4)
• If SJ defeats KC AND SEA loses to HOU

COL will finish WEST #4
• If COL defeats RSL AND SEA loses to HOU AND SJ ties or loses to KC:
If SEA loses by 2 goals or more AND SJ ties: SJ WEST #5 (EAST #3), SEA WEST #6 (EAST #4)
If SEA loses by 1 goal AND SJ ties: WEST #5 (EAST #3) on total goals
If SEA loses AND SJ loses: SEA WEST #5 (EAST #3), SJ WEST #6 (EAST #4)

SEA will finish WEST #4, COL will finish WEST #5 (EAST #3), SJ will finish WEST #6 (EAST #4)
• If SEA ties or defeats HOU AND COL defeats RSL AND SJ ties or loses to KC
• If COL ties RSL AND SJ loses to KC

Get all of that? Good, lets get on to the predictions for the weekend.

Saturday

Seattle Sounders FC – at – Houston Dynamo

Before the season I believe I pegged this game as a big one on the final weekend of the season. That was when I thought Houston would be a contender behind Geoff Cameron and Brian Ching. The Dynamo are hoping to close the year on a high note though against a team that could turn into one of their rivals.

Look for this one to be played on the wings with Seattle controlling the pace in this one. The Sounders have been red-hot in league play over the last couple of months and even on the road I don’t see them cooling off here when they know they can move ahead of FC Dallas with a win (and a loss by Dallas in LA). Houston will play with pride but the offense won’t be there to stay with Steve Zakuani and the Sounders.

WVH Prediction: Seattle 2, Houston 1

————————————————————————

Toronto FC – at – D.C. United

Jamie Moreno’s last game with United, possible MLS too. I see him going on out top in this one with a goal to extend his all-time mark. Toronto could spoil the fun but I’m not betting money on it.

WVH Prediction: D.C. 1, Toronto 0

———————————————————

San Jose Earthquakes – at – Kansas City Wizards

This one could be very interesting to watch. For the Quakes its all about playoff positioning. I feel they’re suited better to make a run if they’re in the eastern conference bracket instead of the western conference. Depending on how the Seattle game goes earlier in the day tomorrow the Quakes could just be playing for a draw. Now I doubt they’d ever admit that but really its all about match-ups going forward and they don’t want RSL or LA.

KC will put up an interesting game even though they’re out of contention. I think it ends in a draw with Chris Wondolowski taking over the Golden Boot standings on the final weekend.

WVH Prediction: Kansas City 1, San Jose 1

—————————————————————————–

Real Salt Lake – at – Colorado Rapids

Another game that has a lot riding on it. I’ve said all year this would be a game that would have a lot of playoff meaning. Not only does it have playoff positioning but it could also mean a Supporter’s Shield for RSL with a road win against their Rocky Mountain Cup rivals.

I think this will definitely be the game of the weekend and a physical one at that. I just see another draw between these two right now though. RSL can win on the road but Colorado certainly has a way of finding goals with Omar Cummings.

WVH Prediction: Colorado 1, RSL 1

———————————————————-

Chicago Fire – at – Chivas USA

I’ve grown used to seeing both of these clubs in the post season over the last couple years. Just weird that neither one will be joining the post season fun this year. We get to see Brian McBride and C.J. Brown’s last game with the Fire as well as Jonathan Bornstein’s final game with Chivas USA. I’m hoping McBride rides off into the sunset with a win but I think Chivas will spoil that.

WVH Prediction: Chivas 2, Chicago 1

——————————————————————–

Sunday

Philadelphia Union – at – Columbus Crew

I really believe the Will Hesmer goal will do wonders for this club going into the playoffs. Just look at their midweek CCL result against Joe Public, 4-1. Seeing how Philadelphia hasn’t done all that well on the road this season I’d imagine we’ll see Columbus get back into gear before the playoffs begin.

WVH Prediction: Columbus 2, Philadelphia 0

———————————————————————–

FC Dallas – at – LA Galaxy

Dallas finally dropped a game last week in RSL and LA was one of the only clubs to beat them this season. I have a feeling Schellas Hyndman will get this club up for this game no matter what but beating LA at the Home Depot Center isn’t something this Dallas club is used to doing over the years. LA knows they can’t drop this game and I don’t see them doing so here but I think Dallas does get a point out of it with the return of Kevin Hartman in goal.

WVH Prediction: LA 1, Dallas 1

Its another big weekend in Major League Soccer, quite possibly the biggest this season. Sure the league dubbed up the LA-NY game a couple weeks ago but this weekend there are some real big ones on the slate that could very well shape how the playoffs will be done in a couple weeks.

The biggest match has to be the RSL-Dallas match. The battle of the two amazing unbeaten runs, Dallas and their league-record unbeaten run (and their unbeaten streak on the road that no one is mentioning) going against RSL and their ridiculous home unbeaten run. One has to end right? We’ll see as these two will preview what will likely be a first round series in the western conference.

Let’s not beat around the push here, time for some previews.

Friday

Chivas USA – at – Seattle Sounders FC

No team is playing better than Seattle these days, I’d even put them as hotter than Dallas or RSL at this point. The bad thing is winning pretty much ensures they will face the Galaxy in the first round, not someone they’ve had success with this season. Going against Chivas however should continue to get them ready for the playoffs or even give them a chance to rest a couple starters if they’d like.

The Sounders could be a bit gassed though do to the midweek friendly (why a friendly this late?!) but I see them coming out on top. Their offense is just too much for a Chivas defense that lets in its fair share of goals.

WVH Prediction: Seattle 2, Chivas 0

—————————————————————–

Saturday

D.C. United – at – Chicago Fire

Both are playing for 2011 now, or in D.C.’s case playing for the third overall pick in January’s SuperDraft. Can’t say there is a lot of reason to be all that jazzed for this one outside of D.C. or Chicago. It feels like a draw but I’ll go bold and say D.C. sneaks away with a win thanks to Rookie of the Year Andy Najar.

WVH Prediction: D.C. 1, Chicago 0

——————————————————–

Columbus Crew – at – Toronto FC

I think the Crew have to find a way to turn things around in this one agains their rivals from the North. I believe the Toronto fans are doing some protesting at this one so they’ll likely not be a factor in this one which should play to the Crew’s advantage. No Dwayne De Rosario due to yellow card accumulation means Columbus should walk with three points.

WVH Prediction: Columbus 2, Toronto 1

————————————————————————

New York Red Bulls – at – Philadelphia Union

The Union have looked good at times this year against lesser competition but New York is no easy foe these days. Philly is very good at PPL Park but as we saw against LA they have times where they give up a lot of space and a good team like New York will gobble it up with their speed. I think the Red Bulls know they can lock up the eastern conference crown with a win here tomorrow night and will come away with it. I just wonder now that the cat is out of the bag with regards to Juan Pablo Angel leaving after this season if it will create some un-welcomed distractions in the locker room.

WVH Prediction: New York 2, Philadelphia 1

——————————————————————————–

Kansas City Wizards – at – New England Revolution

The do-or-die theme lives on for the Wizards who are clearly one bad slip up from not making the playoffs. Going against a spoiler like the Revs it won’t be easy this weekend to get all three points. However the mental toughness that the Wizards showed against Chicago in the midweek lets me believe they will live to fight another day by putting even more pressure on the Colorado Rapids to get a point this weekend in LA. KC moves on but not by much as New England will give them fits.

WVH Prediction: Kansas City 1, New England 0

———————————————————————-

FC Dallas – at – Real Salt Lake

I had a feeling a couple months ago that both teams would be headed for this very game with streaks still going. Both teams want to win this one that is for sure. The midfield battle in this one will be outstanding as you have Javier Morales and Kyle Beckerman going against David Ferreira and Jason Hernandez. Dallas cannot afford to give RSL any set pieces in this one as they’ve struggled with handling them in recent weeks. For me this one seems like it should be a draw but I have trouble going against RSL when they are at Rio Tinto, though this one should be a very solid game. Plus Dallas was the last team to beat RSL this season so the revenge factor weighs in a bit more for me too.

WVH Prediction: RSL 2, Dallas 1

————————————————————————

Houston Dynamo – at – San Jose Earthquakes

Houston going to the Bay area without Geoff Cameron which isn’t a good thing seeing how Chris Wondolowski is hotter than anyone in the league right now. The Dynamo defense has given up plenty of goals this year too which makes believe Wondo will add to his season tally in this one.

WVH Prediction: San Jose 3, Houston 1

———————————————————–

Colorado Rapids – at – LA Galaxy

A whole lot rides on this match for the Rapids if Kansas City wins in New England. If they don’t then the Rapids are in the playoffs and this just becomes a matter of playoff positioning for them. The Galaxy on the other hand hope to wrap up the Supporter’s Shield trophy with a win in this one. Edson Buddle, Landon Donovan and David Beckham looked nicely in sync in the last couple weeks, I figure that trend will continue here.

WVH Prediction: LA 2, Colorado 1

(Getty Images)

If certain events happen this week we could see the final three playoff spots all snatched up. Again there are some Ifs involved there but we very well could be down to teams clinched playing for positions rather than playing to get in before its all said and done.

Only Kansas City can control what happens this weekend. They lose to Seattle and its pretty much good bye for them, Toronto FC and Chicago. Well actually Toronto and Chicago are nearly dead going into the weekend but just need another result to be officially eliminated by the eyes of the MLS front office.

There are plenty of good games this weekend including one tonight.

Friday

Columbus Crew – at – Chicago Fire

It seems as though neither team wants a result these days. Just when you think the Fire are about to beginning making a run into the post season they fall hard and fast. The Crew on the other hand haven’t looked the same for nearly a month in league play. Fatigue or schedule congestion could be to blame, same with some injuries to key guys but really the Crew haven’t done enough recently to suggest they’ll be a strong playoff team this year.

Tonight will be interesting in Chicago. The Fire are playing for their lives but then again they have been for weeks now and it doesn’t seem to do them a bit of good with their backs to the wall. I’d imagine the Crew will want to erase the disappointment from their midweek loss in the US Open Cup. They could start out slow and the Fire will catch them napping if that is the case but I see the Crew keeping this one level.

WVH Prediction: Chicago 1, Columbus 1

—————————————————————-

Saturday

Real Salt Lake – at – New York Red Bulls

Big game of the week in some eyes but New York will be without some key components in this one. No Bouna Coundol in net or Dane Richards on the wings will be tough to overcome even for the star-studded attack from New York. That should play into the hands of RSL on the road here. Normally I’d give New York the upper hand but this one looks even.

I think a draw sounds more likely here with these two as RSL will be fine defensively in this one but I think Rafa Marquez holds them in check offensively. A lot will come down to backup keeper Greg Sutton in this one for New York.

WVH Prediction: New York 1, RSL 1

——————————————————————

Colorado Rapids – at – FC Dallas

The home finale for the regular season for FC Dallas this weekend as they host the Rapids. This one should be fun to watch as Jeff Cunningham will be going for the MLS all-time goalscoring record. I have a good feeling that he will get it too. Look for Colorado to press a bit more in this one after dropping a disappointing game to D.C. United last week at home. FCD can handle the pressure though and should find a way to push their streak to 19 games.

WVH Prediction: FC Dallas 2, Colorado 1

————————————————————–

San Jose Earthquakes – at – D.C. United

Can the Black-and-Red spoilers do it two weeks in a row? Eh I doubt it. San Jose has had their number before and I doubt that trend will go away anytime soon. The Quakes tend to do well against lesser quality sides in this league so look for them to secure their place in the post season for the first time since 2005 when the first version of the Quakes were still alive.

WVH Prediction: San Jose 2, D.C. United 0

—————————————————————–

Seattle Sounders FC – at – Kansas City Wizards

This has to be the game of the weekend here as so much rides on it for a few clubs. Seattle could be a bit tired after their big Open Cup win this week but look for Sigi Schmid’s team to remain focused in this one. They’ll want to wrap up a playoff spot too this weekend. Kansas City has to find ways to challenge the Sounders in the back and finish their chances, something they failed to do last week in New York. I think this one stays level though as Seattle’s defense has really come together nicely in recent weeks.

WVH Prediction: Kansas City 1, Seattle 1

————————————————————————

Toronto FC – at – Chivas USA

Toronto isn’t completely out of it yet but it really doesn’t matter at this point for them. This one is more about pride and moving forward than anything else. Look for each club to give a decent effort while trying out some new looks as they begin work on their roster shake ups for this fall.

WVH Prediction: Chivas 2, Toronto 1

————————————————————–

Sunday

New England Revolution – at – Houston Dynamo

Fun fact, New England has never lost at Robertson Stadium. Can you believe that? Sounds like a draw to me though this time around as each are playing for pride and draft pick positioning.

WVH Prediction: Houston 2, New England 2

The playoff picture could be a whole lot clearer after this weekend. Three teams have the chance to clinch spots in the post season while we’ll likely be able to see another couple be eliminated from contention. The full weekend slate will also feature some tired legs for some teams that have already played in the midweek.

This weekend will also feature some good rivalry games as well. In Texas we’ll see the Brimstone Cup while out west in LA will be the second edition of the SuperClasico for 2010.

Everyone is in action over the weekend so let’s get down to the previews shall we?

Saturday

Toronto FC – at – Seattle Sounders FC

Both teams had midweek games in the CCL and with Seattle resting most of their main guys in that one I’d look for them to get the advantage at home in this one. Toronto looked like they had a chance after beating Houston on the road a couple weeks ago but their slip up to San Jose at BMO Field last week pretty but signaled an end to their season.

This game should be that final signal for Reds fans who know a post season birth is pretty much out of their reach at this point. TFC will make it interesting in this one as all desperate teams do in this situation but I just like the Sounders and how they’re playing these days more, especially at home. Blaise Nkufo should continue his current form against a weaker defense while Seattle really needs Fredy Montero to find the back of the net again.

Player to watch out for: Steve Zakuani – His speed on the wings should be a difference maker in this one.

WVH Prediction: Seattle 2, Toronto 0

————————————————————

Houston Dynamo – at – Philadelphia Union

Philadelphia came back down to earth on Wednesday when they got blown out in Colorado 4-1 by the Rapids. Not being able to mark Omar Cummings is one thing but I’d look for Peter Nowak’s team to bounce back a bit more in this one as they’ll have to deal with Brian Ching and company.

Philadelphia managed to win in Houston earlier this year so I’d expect them to ride that momentum in this one a bit as the Dynamo will likely be starting Tyler Deric in goal for the first time. I’d imagine we’ll see more of the same out of Sebastien Le Toux in this one at PPL Park. Last weekend against Chivas USA he and the rest of the Union had their way with the Chivas defense. Philly seems likely to keep their very slim playoff hopes alive after this one.

Player to watch out for: Danny Mwanga – He sat out Wednesday’s meeting in Colorado so look for him to make his return to the lineup this weekend.

WVH Prediction: Philadelphia 2, Houston 1

—————————————————————-

San Jose Earthquakes – at – Columbus Crew

Another match with two teams that had midweek games. Columbus however was able to rest the majority of their main starters though as the club headed down to Guatemala in the CCL, while San Jose was not able to do the same in their 3-0 loss at home to Chicago.

I’d imagine this game will be fairly tight as San Jose always plays the Crew well in Columbus. The Crew need to hold off the Quakes early attack as they’ve been known to give up some goals early in recent games. Also the Crew need to find ways to get Guillermo Barros Schelotto involved early and often in this one.

Who scores first will likely win this match as both teams are undefeated when scoring first this season. Columbus should be more rested for this one and I think will come away with the points.

Player to watch out for: Chad Marshall – He’ll have to find a way to slow down the hot feet of Chris Wondolowski.

WVH Prediction: Columbus 1, San Jose 0

———————————————————–

Real Salt Lake – at – New England Revolution

Had this been in Salt Lake I’d just skip ahead to the prediction because it would be that easy. But being in New England could be a little bit of trouble for the defending champs. For one they could be a bit gassed after their midweek draw in Toronto in the CCL. I’d imagine Jason Kreis will inject some fresher legs into the starting lineup for this one.

New England has to find ways to hold possession in this one and keep the flow of the game on their side. RSL likes to hold possession and dicate how things go in the games. If the Revs can control that they could get some points here.

However their last two games the Revs have given up late leads to top teams in the league and I don’t see a change coming anytime soon. They just don’t have the talent to keep up with the likes of RSL. Look for Kreis’ club to bounce back from their 1-1 draw last week to Colorado.

Player to watch out for: Cory Gibbs – He’ll have to step up his play against the attack that RSL brings to the table.

WVH Prediction: RSL 2, New England 1

————————————————————————-

Kansas City Wizards – at – New York Red Bulls

Its do-or-die time for the Wizards. While they won’t be eliminated from contention with a loss this weekend, not getting points won’t be an option. As for the Red Bulls they will look to keep their eyes on the prize, an eastern conference crown or maybe even a Supporter’s Shield trophy.

I think this however could be a bit of a let down game for the Red Bulls after their big win over LA last week. The week after games like teams tend to take the foot off the gas a bit and KC could be just the team to sneak up on New York and grab a valuable point away from home.

New York will need to put constant pressure on the Wizards’ backline. Both teams play with speed and could be level on that account. It could come down to who uses their speed the best that will get the result in this one. I’m going out on a limb and saying this one will be a draw. KC should bounce back from their loss to Dallas last week as they’ll be searching for every point possible.

Player to watch out for: Ryan Smith – He’ll be the key in the midfield to the Wizards in this one.

WVH Prediction: New York 1, Kansas City 1

——————————————————————

Chicago Fire – at – FC Dallas

Ah the old Brimstone Cup rivalry. Well it hasn’t been much of a rivalry these last few years as Dallas has won the trophy each year going back to 2002. Chicago comes into town hoping to ride the waves of their big 3-0 win on Wednesday in San Jose. On the other side of things Dallas is going to be going for their 18th straight unbeaten game.

Chicago has to find ways to keep the momentum up from Wednesday’s game. The thing is they’ll be going against a Dallas team that appears to be getting healthier here. With only a couple points separating Dallas, RSL and LA at this point look for Schellas Hyndman’s team to go for the three points here.

Player to watch out for: Jeff Cunningham – He’s always had his way with the Fire, look for him to tie the league all-time scoring mark in this one.

WVH Prediction: Dallas 2, Chicago 1

—————————————————————-

D.C. United – at – Colorado Rapids

I’ll keep this one short. D.C. has never played all that well in Colorado and the Rapids are one of the hottest teams at home right now. Looks for more Omar Cumming’s magic.

WVH Prediction: Colorado 3, D.C. 0

———————————————————-

Sunday

LA Galaxy – at – Chivas USA

Rivalry games are always tricky to predict (see last week’s Rocky Mountain Cup game with Colorado and RSL). Chivas is holding on to a very tiny chance at making the playoffs going into this one so they could be a bit desperate going against a team that has already clinched up a post season ticket.

On paper this one seems like a no brainer, LA is the more talented team on all sides of the ball and Chivas continues to find ways to stink up the place. But again this is a rivalry game so you can expect Chivas to give LA their very best.

I think it will be the usual physical match these two typically have with one another. But in the end I think LA should come out on top in this one as they would love nothing more than ending their rival’s playoff hopes here.

Player to watch out for: Edson Buddle – He has to get back on track and going against Chivas’ defense he could do that.

WVH Prediction: LA 2, Chivas 0

In every ways this could be one of the biggest weekends in Major League Soccer this season. Not only is the league hyping the ever living snot out of one game tonight but there are a good three or four other games this weekend worth tuning into.

While tonight’s game could end up as the best game in the way the league his hyping it I’d throw my name in the hat to say that Colorado-RSL or KC-Dallas could end up being better in the end than tonight’s clash in LA.

I’ve put these previews off long enough today so let’s get down to it shall we?

Friday

New York Red Bulls – at – LA Galaxy

Yes the epic clash of the league’s two high profile teams on national TV, at 11pm ET tonight. Yes 11 pm ET, so no one on the right coast will be tuning in unless they’re at a sports bar with a bunch of buddies drinking. I know its going to be an effort for me here in Dallas to make it though this one but I’ll make it work, might even drink a Red Bull for fun.

This one will either be the classic the league is praying for or it will be a snooze fest. Without Thierry Henry the game definitely lacks some of its charm but it should still be entertaining to watch nonetheless. New York has to find a way to show they can hang with the top western powers on the road. They went down to RSL, barely got a draw in Dallas and winning in LA is never easy for them.

After a slight bump in the road LA has proven yet again in recent weeks that they are the top dog. Plus them being at home so much recently has to help them out in this game, especially since New York is travelling across the country to play a game that starts so late in their normal timezone. I know players say that stuff doesn’t matter but it does.

This one will come down to defense and who’s stands up more. LA is missing some key elements in this one (Omar Gonzalez) but I still favor them over New York’s backline. Landon Donvan and Edson Buddle will likely find ways to get around the New York defense as well. But don’t sleep on Dane Richard’s ability to use his speed against LA. We know the Galaxy have trouble defending speed so it will be up to Richards to catch them off guard.

I like LA though in this one. They’re at home, they know how to beat this New York team. I also just think with the way Donovan played last weekend it will carry over in this meeting.

Player to watch out for: Yohance Marshall – The young rookie will be filling in for Gonzalez again for LA, no doubt NY will want to expose him.

WVH Prediction: LA 1, New York 0

———————————————————————————-

Saturday

San Jose Earthquakes – at – Toronto FC

This is a game Toronto just cannot lose. They need all the points they can get in their final five games. San Jose on the other hand has some games in hand and can stand to drop points if it comes to that this weekend.

I believe the Quakes however will prove to be a tough out for Toronto this weekend. The Reds are likely a bit gassed from their trip to Mexico and even though they got a quality draw down there the travel has to take its toll here.

I still believe though Toronto is a good enough team at home to get a result in this one and San Jose has been shaky at times on the road this season. But it comes down to midfield play and who can score. San Jose has done well recently at pressuring teams and possession the ball through their midfield. Toronto still needs that second scorer to go along side Dwayne De Rosario. I think if DeRo has another MVP game like last week Toronto will win this one but for now I’m calling a draw.

Player to watch out for: Chad Barrett – Will he step up? Boy he needs to.

WVH Prediction: Toronto 1, San Jose 1

————————————————————————–

Chivas USA – at – Philadelphia Union

Unfortunately there are a couple games that have little to absolutely no playoff implications this weekend. This is one of them. Both sides are a week or two away from being eliminated from contention all together so pride is more at stake than anything else.

For me this one is simple, a west coast team that isn’t really all that great travelling east to play a tough side at home sure seems like an easy pick. Philadelphia has been better recently and will control this one with their wing play with Justin Mapp and Fred.

Don’t get me wrong this one will be entertaining to watch as both teams will keep it open and with loads of pace. I just like Philadelphia’s chances to get three points in it.

Player to watch out for: Sebastien Le Toux – I really think Chivas has no defensive answer for this guy.

WVH Prediction: Philadelphia 2, Chivas 0

————————————————————–

Houston Dynamo – at – D.C. United

Speaking of playing for pride, both teams have endured terrible seasons and its coming down to the wire for Houston. One more bad game and they will officially be eliminated alongside D.C. United.

I think its difficult to think that Houston can bounce back from that 4-3 loss in Kansas City on Wednesday. Dominic Kinnear said last weekend after the loss to Toronto that the season was over and I think D.C. plays on that mentality in this one.

Player to watch out for: Andy Najar – He should have a big game against a mentally beaten Dynamo team.

WVH Prediction: D.C. 2, Houston 1

————————————————————

Columbus Crew – at – New England Revolution

Another club that could be down and out is the Revs. Their late draw to Dallas in the midweek had to feel more like a loss than a draw. Columbus hasn’t been good in recent weeks so that makes this one a bit interesting. A mentally beaten team against a team in a slump.

I’m picking the team in the slump. Columbus got a boost by the midweek win in CCL play against Santos Laguna and I think their confidence should be back up for this one. New England does do well after bad losses/draws but I think the Crew come in and get three big points.

Player to watch out for: Guillermo Barros Schelotto – usually he sits out games on turf but this week he looks like he’ll suit up.

WVH Prediction: Columbus 1, New England 0

—————————————————————–

Seattle Sounders FC – at – Chicago Fire

The Sounders may have had a rough midweek in Mexico as they dropped a two goal lead to lose 3-2 to Monterrey but I stil like their chances in this one against a Chicago Fire team who have looked awful at times lately.

I have no doubt that Seattle will want to put a dagger in the heart of their old teammate Freddie Ljungberg and his club’s playoff hopes in this one. The Fire haven’t made the most of their games in hand against teams like Seattle either lately.

This one again comes down to the midfield and I still have to side with the Sounders. Their play last week in Columbus shows that they can enter any place and win when they want to. Blaise Nkufo can also score a few goals too which helps relieve pressure from Fredy Montero. I think Montero will have a big game in this one as Wilman Conde is sitting this one out due to a suspension.

Player to watch out for: Alvaro Fernandez – The other DP for Seattle should have a nice evening on the wings for Seattle.

WVH Prediction: Seattle 2, Chicago 1

——————————————————————

FC Dallas – at – Kansas City Wizards

Could be the game of the weekend right here. The hottest two clubs (by the league’s standard) faceoff in a big time match for the home side. The Wizards have done their part in their big week of three games in seven days by getting two wins in the first two games. Facing a team like Dallas at home won’t be easy though as Dallas has a never say die attitude like they do.

Both clubs are coming off big emotional games on Wednesday too. KC got a huge come from behind win over Houston while Dallas battled back from 2-0 to get a last second draw against New England. Who handles their emotions better at the start of this one will go a long way.

This one comes down to the midfield. Both clubs like possession and with a tight field it makes those possession minutes all the more valuable. KC will need to not push so early for offense as they tend to run out of gas late when they go all in early on in games. Dallas is a tricky team in that they can wear you out if you do things like that.

Dallas needs to be better defensively than they’ve been in recent games. Counter attacks have cost them points, as well as sloppy play. KC is quick enough and dangerous enough up top to make them pay for that.

I feel that KC can be the team that ends Dallas’ amazing run here but this one looks more like a draw when you throw in how gassed these two teams probably are at the moment. Dallas doesn’t seem to know how to lose on the road while KC will find it hard to put them away.

Player to watch out for: Teal Bunbury – He could be the X-factor off the bench for the Wizards late.

WVH Prediction: Kansas City 1, Dallas 1

————————————————————–

Colorado Rapids – at – Real Salt Lake

This may be the one I’m looking most forward to at the moment. Colorado has been hot lately and have been scoring goals in bunches. RSL on the other hand is well RSL, they’re tough and extremely hard to beat at home. Throw in the rivalry factor and this one could be the best game this weekend.

I still believe Colorado can knock off RSL but just not in Rio Tinto. Also Colorado still hasn’t shown the ability yet to win big games on the road this season. If this were a home game for them I’d say otherwise.

RSL gets the edge too for the fact that they know they have to lockdown points with FC Dallas on their tail. They need homefield advantage in the playoffs more than anyone else in the league. Look for RSL to win this one but not by much.

Player to watch out for: Kyle Beckerman – He’s always fun to watch against his old club.

WVH Prediction: RSL 1, Colorado 0

Week 25 in Major League Soccer heads towards the weekend. After two straight night of decent games the league heads towards the busy weekend slate as nearly all the games this weekend have some sort of playoff implications to them. San Jose got a big win on Wednesday while Dallas and New York tied in their game last night in Frisco.

Its also been a busy week on the trade front. I know I’ve been quiet about things due to some personal issues going on for me here. But now that the league roster freeze deadline has come and gone teams are either geared up for the playoffs or preparing for next year in some cases.

We have six quality games this weekend and like I mentioned above they all have heavy playoff implications on them. A couple teams have a chance to be “in” based on math (one has to wonder when exactly the league will say these teams are in or not).

So let’s get down to it here.

Saturday

Chicago Fire – at – Real Salt Lake

The Fire is a pesky enough team that could end RSL’s amazing home streak. I do believe that but at the same time I don’t see RSL going down easy here this weekend even though they have some tired legs due to the CCL game earlier this week. The Fire are desperate for points after coming up real short in two games last week. They still have two games in hand against nearly everyone in the league but so far they haven’t made the most of it and trying to start now in Salt Lake won’t be easy.

RSL will have to find ways to create their offense with Javier Morales (suspended) and Fabian Espindola (injuried) out for this one. A lot of the pressure there will fall directly on guys like Robbie Findley who have to step up down the stretch for RSL to have a shot at a repeat this season. Alvaro Sabario has been great this season but he needs help from Findley to create chances and to finish them.

The Fire will have to lean on Freddie Ljungberg in this one but they should get Marco Pappa back for this one which will do wonders for their attack.

I think RSL finds a way to continue their amazing 23-game unbeaten run here but it won’t be easy. Chicago will keep this one close but I just have trouble picking against RSL at this point at Rio Tinto.

Player to watch out for: Logan Pause – If he can contain Sabario the Fire have a good shot at getting at least a draw here.

WVH Prediction: RSL 2, Chicago 1

——————————————————————-

Seattle Sounders FC – at – Columbus Crew

Both sides will have some tired legs in this one due to the midweek CCL games. Seattle especially since they were on the road for their game in Costa Rica. Columbus had little problems with their CCL game against Joe Public and I think they’ll lean on that performance to keep things going in league play.

Columbus was able to rest plenty of their regulars too which is good news for the Crew faithful going into this encounter with their old coach Sigi Schmid. The Sounders did sit a few regulars as well but losing in Costa Rica all but ends their run in this year’s CCL tournament for the Sounders.

This one will come down to the midfield battle. Columbus will want to erase their horrible performance in LA from a week ago with a solid effort in this one. Possession will be key for both clubs and so will wing play. Each like to spread it out in their attack and Seattle probably has an edge as far as the speed goes. How Columbus stops Fredy Montero will also be key, look for rookie Shaun Francis to have the fun task of marking him tomorrow night.

I’d like to take Columbus but part of me feels this one will end level. Remember Seattle found a way to win in Columbus last year so they know how to do it. A tie just seems more likely this year.

Player to watch out for: Andres Mendoza – The newcomer for Columbus looked very dangerous last week in LA. Hopefully he gets more minutes this week.

WVH Prediction: Columbus 1, Seattle 1

——————————————————————–

Toronto FC – at – Houston Dynamo

Boy its been one hell of a week for Toronto. Not only have they dropped some games in the past week but they also canned their coach and GM. I think this is the game they start to turn the ship a bit. Houston is no easy out but I like a team playing with loads of emotion, even on the road.

Houston will be happy that they are getting a tired Toronto team in town though. TFC’s brutal schedule hasn’t been kind to the Reds but then again Houston hasn’t exactly been setting the league on fire lately either. They are just 1-5-4 in the last 10 league games.

This one will come down to who handles the emotion better. If Toronto can channel their emotions in this one I think they’ll get a result but if they don’t get their attack going early enough with that emotion look for Houston to pounce all over them. Geoff Cameron will have to handle his old teammate Dwayne De Rosario in this one which will be an exciting matchup to see. I’m calling to upset with Toronto though, something just feels right for that pick. I may be crazy but why the hell not.

Player to watch out for: Danny Cruz – Look for the youngster to take over for the newly departed Brian Mullan on the wings. His energy could be exactly what Houston needs in this one.

WVH Prediction: Toronto 1, Houston 0

——————————————————————-

New England Revolution – at – Colorado Rapids

Think Colorado is thinking playoffs with all the moves they made this week? I believe so. Adding veteran Brian Mullan to their midfield was a good move, and I honestly believe they got the better end of the deal when they dealt for Mac Kandji from New York. I expect both players to be involved in this one in some way for Gary Smith.

New England could be a trap game for the Rapids, even at home. The Revs are hanging on by a tiny tread at this point for the playoffs. Their defense will have to really step up in this one as they are going against one of the hotter offenses in the league right now.

Omar Cummings and Conor Casey are finally looking like the duo we know they can be. Cummings has really come on strong lately for the Rapids too. It will be interesting to see how Kandji fits into the equation with those two now.

I like Colorado in this one as they’ve shown this week that they’re making a serious playoff push here with the recent changes to their roster. I think the Revs will play them tight but Colorado edges them out due to their offense in the end.

Player to watch out for: Cory Gibbs – A homecoming of sorts for Gibbs who was with the Rapids last year before getting traded last winter to the Revs.

WVH Prediction: Colorado 3, New England 1

——————————————————————

D.C. United – at – LA Galaxy

The classic old rivalry isn’t what it used to be with United not up to the level that they once were. Though last week’s shocking road win for D.C. makes this one a little more interesting as LA could be on a let down after last week’s dominating victory over Columbus.

LA will look to just continue the form they had last week against the Crew though. Playing with more energy lately the Galaxy should get on the board early and often against a weaker D.C. defense. United will pose some issues for LA up top with youngster Andy Najar but I still believe an east coast team in the cellar travelling west like this is never a recipe for a win. Go with LA, its the simple pick here.

Player to watch out for: Edson Buddle – His league-leading 14 goals is only two less than what D.C. has scored all season.

WVH Prediction: LA 2, D.C. 0

———————————————————————-

Kansas City Wizards – at – Chivas USA

Probably the trickiest matchup of the weekend in my opinion. Kansas City was looking good until their schedule got changed and they had last week off. Then Chivas USA came out last week and delivered a strong performance at home in a 2-0 win over New England.

Playoff hopes are still there for both squads but draws won’t cut it for either at this point. KC is sitting five points back of the eighth and final spot while Chivas is eight points back. Each need those three points as much as the other. KC has never won on the road against Chivas USA either.

Each will look to get their offenses going early as Kei Kamara has to be involved often for the Wizards to do well in this one. The same goes for Justin Braun for Chivas USA. Look for Shavar Thomas to go one-on-one with Braun for KC. The two have played together before so that matchup will be worth watching.

I think in the end KC gets another road draw out of this one. I like what they’ve done in recent weeks but I think the week off could be more of a momentum killer than anything else for Peter Vermes’ club.

Player to watch out for: Ryan Smith – He has to make good decisions in the midfield and keep the attack going on the wings.

WVH Prediction: Chivas 1, KC 1

Two of the bottom clubs in the league right now. Neither has an offense I can get behind. Then again I’m not thrilled about either defense. I’m never a fan of picking bad east coast teams when they travel out west either. Going with Chivas in a less than stellar battle tonight.

WVH Prediction: Chivas 2, New England 1

—————————————————–

Saturday

D.C. United – at – Toronto FC

Preki’s side has to find a way to get three points in this one or else their playoff dreams are going to be gone for another year. Thankfully for them D.C. is rather awful on the road and just rather awful overall.

WVH Prediction: Toronto 2, D.C. 0

——————————————————–

Colorado Rapids – at – New York Red Bulls

Probably one of the most interesting games of the weekend here. The Rapids are flying high thanks to six goals in two games at home. Things will be different on the road though and the Red Bulls will likely pick up the pieces from their loss last week.

WVH Prediction: New York 2, Colorado 0

——————————————————–

Chicago Fire – at – Philadelphia Union

Chicago is still in it right now for the playoffs but honestly they’re holding on for dear life at this point. The new additions haven’t exactly panned out like they would have hoped. Going to Philly won’t be easy either but I don’t know if the Union can defensively do enough to get three points in this one.

WVH Prediction: Philadelphia 2, Chicago 2

———————————————————–

FC Dallas – at – San Jose Earthquakes

A very tricky game for FCD. They’ll be missing plenty of key elements on defense due to injuries and they will also have to deal with Geovanni who seems to be finding his way now in MLS. You have to wonder when the run will end for Dallas and it could happen here but this just seems like another place Dallas will get a draw in.

WVH Prediction: San Jose 1, Dallas 1

————————————————–

Columbus Crew – at – LA Galaxy

My wonder with David Beckham coming back is how exactly will he help this struggling club? Its possible he’ll provide more of a spark than the usual distraction but right now the Galaxy need to find ways to distance themselves from the Crew in the standings. I think they find a way to edge out the Crew in this one in what should be the best game of the weekend.

WVH Prediction: LA 1, Columbus 0

Its a new week in Major League Soccer, the first in the month of September. The playoff stretch run is hotter now than its ever been with plenty still up for grabs this weekend. Its possible we could even see a new team atop the overall standings when its all said and done on Sunday. Its a big weekend for that reason and a few others.

Obviously the concern going into this weekend is the amount of players getting called up for international duty. The big profile matchup of the weekend in Utah between Real Salt Lake and New York lost a bit of it’s luster when six players between the two clubs were called into action by their respective countries. How teams handle the losses will be interesting to see play out this weekend.

Saturday

Kansas City Wizards – at – Philadelphia Union

The streaking Wizards face a must-win game on the road once again. Last week they came up huge in LA with a surprising 2-0 win over the Galaxy. But this weekend won’t be any easier in Philadelphia. KC will be without their main scoring threat Kei Kamara and Philadelphia is proving to be a very tough place to play at.

I think KC has a bit of a let down in this one but is able to get a point on the road. Its better than a loss but still at this stage in the season three points are far more valuable.

Player to watch out for: Justin Mapp – The move to Philly has been a welcome change for the winger. He’s starting to fit in nicely with their offense.

WVH Prediction: Philadelphia 1, Kansas City 1

—————————————————————————–

LA Galaxy – at – Chicago Fire

The no Freddie Ljungberg and Marco Pappa for Chicago really worries me. But then again with the way LA has been over the last month it may not matter. Chicago was one of those clubs that got points on LA last time out so who’s to say it won’t be different this time around in Chicago?

LA has to find a spark either with Edson Buddle or Landon Donovan or with someone else for a change. Teams know what they’re getting in the Buddle-Donovan combo, its time for them to throw something else out there to catch teams off guard.

This one feels like a draw though I wouldn’t be shocked either way. LA knows they have to get back on track or else they stand the risk of getting pasted by FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake in the west, not to mention Columbus and New York are at their heels for the Supporer’s Shield race.

Player to watch out for: Omar Gonzalez – He’ll need to be the anchor in the back that we know he can be. Going against a guy like Brian McBride won’t be easy though.

WVH Prediction: Chicago 2, LA 2

——————————————————————–

Seattle Sounders FC – at – New England Revolution

Its hard to ignore what Fredy Montero is doing in Seattle these days. But its the supporting cast that’s really come up from the ground in these last two months. The Sounders can’t take their foot off the pedal though in league play. Another win on the road would easily distance themselves from the final two playoff spots.

The Revs on the other hand are now just playing to play out the season. Their playoff chances are tiny at best right now and after the loss in SuperLiga this past week you have to wonder where this club is mentally. Normally I don’t like Seattle in a game like this on the road but the Revs are missing some key parts all over and I like the Sounder attack in this one.

Player to watch out for: Nate Jaqua – It was good to see him back out there for the Sounders in the Open Cup win the other day. Let’s see if he gets some minutes in this one.

WVH Prediction: Seattle 2, New England 1

————————————————————————-

Columbus Crew – at – D.C. United

A rematch of this past week’s Open Cup semifinal that saw the Crew escape in overtime. Expect a tight battle in this one that could see plenty of cards. D.C. will be out for revenge in this one so I’d imagine they’ll come out firing early. Columbus has the defense to hold off their attack though.

The Crew know a win could mean first place in the league if things go right for them. They’ll want to make sure that happens or at least continue to put the pressure on LA.

Player to watch out for: Emilio Renteria – He’s quickly becoming one of my favorites with the Crew. I’m sure Columbus fans can agree that he’s been a welcome addition to this roster.

WVH Prediction: Columbus 1, D.C. 0

—————————————————————–

Toronto FC – at – FC Dallas

My wedding anniversary is keeping me from this one but that’s alright as I don’t expect much out of this game. Toronto will be missing plenty of key guys all over the pitch with Dwayne De Rosario, Julian de Guzman and Nana Attakora all out on international duty.

Dallas will be looking to extend their unbeaten mark to 13 games with another win at home. Kevin Hartman will be without two key guys in the midfield but Schellas Hyndman has enough depth to make up for it on his bench in guys like Eric Avila and Bruno Guarda. Missing Daniel Hernandez and Atiba Harris won’t be easy for Dallas but they still have David Ferriera leading the charge which is good enough for me.

Player to watch out for: Brek Shea – He could have a field day against the Toronto midfield.

WVH Prediction: Dallas 2, Toronto 1

————————————————————–

Chivas USA – at – Colorado Rapids

Here’s another home game for the Rapids that should easily keep them in the playoff race for another week. They got a huge win at home against Houston a week ago and Chivas USA looks ripe for the picking in this one. If they play like they did a week ago they should have no issues getting by Chivas in this one.

Chivas will likely get a boost from Justin Braun who will likely find a way to make his mark on this one. I just don’t think the Chivas defense can handle the Omar Cummings-Conor Casey attack at this point though.

Player to watch out for: Casey – He looked good a week ago. Its time for him to get to MVP form like we know he can get to.

WVH Prediction: Colorado 2, Chivas 0

——————————————————————

New York Red Bulls – at – Real Salt Lake

Neither coach can be too happy about the losses on their roster right now to international call-ups but nothing they can do about it now. Each are missing key guys across the field which would have made this game even more interesting. Many believe New York can be the club to snap the RSL home unbeaten streak too but without guys like Rafa Marquez and Dane Richards it won’t be easy.

RSL will likely be fine without Will Johnson and Alvaro Sabario in this one too. Their offense is still tough enough and their defense is stingy enough to get the result in this one. It will be close but look for RSL to come away on top.

Player to watch out for: Kyle Beckerman – RSL’s chances rest with him in this one. I like their chances in that case.

WVH Prediction: RSL 2, New York 1

———————————————————–

Sunday

San Jose Earthquakes – at – Houston Dynamo

I’d almost call this a must-win for the Quakes. Houston is nearly in no positive to reach the playoffs this season and a road win would be huge for their playoff chances. San Jose has to find ways to get newcomer Geovanni into the action to get him used to the style of play in MLS.

Geoff Cameron won’t make it easy though on the Quakes. Part of me thinks the Dynamo will bounce back after their dismal effort a week ago in Colorado. A draw in this one sounds likely.

Player to watch out for: Brian Ching – He’s questionable for this one but if he’s good to go he’ll possibly have a nice day against a shaky Quakes defense.

WVH Prediction: Houston 1, San Jose 1

Even though there hasn’t been a league match so far this week it seems like we’ve already had a load of soccer to talk about with the four MLS sides in the CONCACAF Champions League. Its time for now to at least move on from those disappointments and look ahead to this weekend’s action.

Every team will be in action this weekend with seven games tomorrow and one lone game on Sunday. No doubt the four teams in the Champions League will be a tad bit gassed this week, not to mention two of them (Columbus and Seattle) have USOC games to deal with next week.

Its also a pretty big weekend for clubs jockeying for a playoff spot. There’s no doubt the eastern conference clubs need a big weekend right now to get back in the race. Currently four western conference teams hold the wildcard spots in the playoff race. Teams like Toronto, Kansas City and Chicago have to find ways to get points this weekend and we’re not just talking about a draw. Three points are vital for several clubs this weekend.

As always feel free to leave your score predictions and thoughts below on this weekend’s action.

Saturday

FC Dallas – at – Columbus Crew

The headliner of the weekend for me. The hottest club going into a place they struggle to win at in Columbus. I have a feeling the Crew will be eager to put the midweek disappointment in Mexico behind them in a hurry with another strong showing at Crew Stadium.

This looks like the game that could break the streak for Dallas but I feel like a draw is more likely here even with Columbus having some tired legs. Dallas will miss Dax McCarty in the midfield but look for them to get a late goal from someone like David Ferriera to get out of Columbus with a draw and their streak in tact.

Player to watch out for: Guillermo Barros Schelotto – He didn’t make the Mexico trip so he should be fresh for this game. He has to be the difference maker in the midfield and put pressure on the Dallas backline early.

WVH Prediction: Columbus 1, Dallas 1

——————————————————————–

Real Salt Lake – at – Toronto FC

Two teams that definitely have something to prove this weekend. RSL will want to put the 5-4 loss in the Champions League behind them in a big way but going to BMO Field won’t be an easy way to do so. I’d still think that even though they’ll do their best to put that loss behind them it may take a little while.

Toronto saw their unbeaten run at home come to an ugly end last week against New York. Then their play in the Champions League wasn’t anything worth talking about. I do think they’ll give RSL fits tomorrow but the degree of how much will be interesting to see. I’m going with a draw only because I don’t know where the offense will come from for Toronto and I think we’ll see a dip in play from RSL.

Player to watch out for: Dwayne De Rosario – He was rested in the midweek so he should be the driving force for Toronto against a gassed RSL team.

WVH Prediction: Toronto 1, RSL 1

—————————————————————–

Philadelphia Union – at – New England Revolution

I know I pretty much declared New England dead in the playoff race but a big win could help spark a small comeback (though the ground they have to gain is a bit much at this point). I think after a 4-1 loss on the road like the Revs had last week they’ll be out to redeem themselves and having an expansion team riddled with defensive issues could be the right cure.

Philadelphia has to sort their issues out in the back if they want to avoid a last place finish this year. They have the offense to stay in games with Sebastien Le Toux and Danny Mwanga but from the defensive side of the ball things are shaky all over. Danny Califf must come up with a big game tomorrow and keep the Revs off the board.

Player to watch out for: Illija Stolica – Where Steve Nicol finds guys like this I’ll never know but Stolica should be the main target for the Revs attack tomorrow. He should be able to matchup nicely against Califf.

WVH Prediction: New England 2, Philadelphia 0

——————————————————————————–

San Jose Earthquakes – at – New York Red Bulls

One of two western conference clubs that have to be careful right now in the playoff race. New York on the other hand is starting to look like the club we expect them to with three DPs. Last week’s dominate win at BMO Field over Toronto should have signaled to the league that this team will only continue to get better. Rough thing for a beat up San Jose club to hear.

San Jose looked good last week in their win over LA but a cross country flight to Red Bull Arena could be a tough thing to deal with. I still don’t see their DP Geovanni making an impact just yet, as he has yet to really gain full fitness here. I like New York to win a close one here as Juan Pablo Angel and Thierry Henry have their way with a depleted Quakes defense.

Player to watch out for: Dane Richards – Somehow this guy has found his way with the new additions in New York. His speed will be the ticket here for New York at home in this one.

WVH Prediction: New York 2, San Jose 1

——————————————————————–

Houston Dynamo - at – Colorado Rapids

Colorado Rapids manager Gary Smith already called this one a must-win for the club. He knows with the remaining home slate his club has to pick up wins at the Dicks Sporting Goods Park whenever they can.

Houston has to build off the big 4-3 win over Chicago last week. While I don’t imagine Brian Ching having another hat trick anytime soon they must continue to lean on his hot hand (or foot in this case) for the scoring. I expect this one to be a little more defensive though as Colorado is usually air tight in the back. Each team will be gunning for the three points but I see a draw here as Colorado continues to look lost and the Dynamo do enough to get a point.

Player to watch out for: Geoff Cameron – He’ll need to be the guy that slows down the Colorado attack in this one for the Dynamo. Getting forward a bit to help out with the offense will also be key as well.

WVH Prediction: Colorado 1, Houston 1

——————————————————————-

Kansas City Wizards – at – LA Galaxy

The Wizards have to ride the wave of a big win from last week and hope to catch the Galaxy napping early. The big talk this week is that scoring early and first on the Galaxy means that Bruce Arena’s side typically losses. That’s usually the case for most team though but its what the Galaxy were preaching that they needed to get back to scoring first again.

KC played LA tight back at the start of the year and should have won had it not been for that gaff in front of the net by Kei Kamara. I’m sure that will be talked about a few times during this game tomorrow. I look for LA to get back to business at home though. They also talked a lot this week about making the Home Depot Center their fortress. KC is in a must-win spot still and their road woes are noticeable. I see LA winning this one.

Player to watch out for: Teal Bunbury – Speed down the middle usually beats LA, and Bunbury has a lot of it to burn.

WVH Prediction: LA 2, Kansas City 0

————————————————————–

Chicago Fire – at – Seattle Sounders FC

Oh the return of Freddie Ljungberg to Seattle. It already seems like ages ago when he played there. The Fire have to bounce back in this one with Ljungberg and get a result to stay in the thick of things for a wild card spot in the playoffs. Seattle holds the keys to one right now but with the extra games right now on their slate they could cough up a game like this one at home.

Expect an interesting clash in this one but look for a draw in the end. Chicago still lacks a finishing touch in the end and defensively they aren’t all quite there just yet.

Player to watch out for: Marco Pappa – He’s no DP but he has to carry some of the offensive weight in this one for the Fire.

WVH Prediction: Seattle 1, Chicago 1

———————————————————–

Sunday

D.C. United – at – Chivas USA

The Ben Olsen club heads west to face Chivas USA. I’d imagine both clubs will be more eager to get this one out of the way in hopes to save some legs for next week’s USOC semifinals that they each have. Seeing is how that’s really all they both have left to play for this season it makes sense.

I think Chivas gets the points in this one though as D.C. has been terrible on the road all season long. This one probably won’t be pretty either as neither team has any wow factor right now.

Player to watch out for: Danny Allsopp – Can he continue his current form of scoring? Against a Chivas defense its certainly possible.

WVH Prediction: Chivas USA 2, D.C. United 1

The weekend is finally here huh? Its been a busy week around here with the redesign of the site and some other things in my personal life taking up loads of time. But the weekend is finally here and the slate of games this weekend certainly doesn’t disappoint. There are a couple good eastern conference matches along with one of the league’s oldest rivalries out west.

I’ll admit my brain is little fried after this week so some previews may run a little shorter than I’d normally like.

But as always feel free to leave your comments below on this weekend’s games. Saturday

New York Red Bulls – at – Toronto FC

New York takes their show back on the road, this time north of the border to Toronto to play at the fortress that is BMO Field. Toronto had a busy week with a Champions League game but I don’t think the extra miles on the legs will affect Preki’s bunch all that much.

I think the DP trio of Rafa Marquez, Thierry Henry and Juan Pablo Angel still need a little more time to adjust to one another. Marquez and Henry still are getting their fitness up to speed and should be fine in time for the playoffs but I see Toronto taking advantage of their home field and getting the points in this one. Expect a tight game but somehow Toronto sneaks by New York.

Player to watch out for: Mista – He seems to be getting used to the league himself, getting his first goal in CCL play was probably huge for him and the club.

WVH Prediction: Toronto 1, New York 0

———————————————————————-

LA Galaxy – at – San Jose Earthquakes

An afternoon affair for the California Clasico. LA comes into town fresh off a big win in New York last week. They know not to take the Quakes lightly too. It will be interesting to see if the Quakes are able to get their new Designated Player Geovanni into the game to help spark their offense.

But looking at the Quakes backline really worries me. With all the injuries and the suspension to Jason Hernandez you have to think that LA should have little trouble finding ways to test Joe Cannon’s goal. LA knows their Supporter’s Shield lead is slimming down so look for them to pounce on a weakened San Jose defense for the road win.

Player to watch out for: Bobby Convey – He’s moving to left back to make up for the losses in defense. How he handles Edson Buddle and Landon Donovan will go a long way in how the Quakes do in this one.

WVH Prediction: LA 2, San Jose 0

—————————————————————–

Colorado Rapids – at – Columbus Crew

Columbus should have a little better time in this one than in their Champions League game on Wednesday against Municipal. Colorado is a bit banged up and in a bit of a funk too. But while the Rapids defense is still one of the better groups in the league its the play in midfield that worries me as they really have little wing play anymore. Going against a team like Columbus that won’t be fun.

The Crew get Eddie Gavin back and in all honesty that is enough for me in this one since we really don’t know what to expect out of Conor Casey and Omar Cummings at the moment.

Player to watch out for: Emmanuel Ekpo – If you saw his goal in the Champions League on Wednesday you’ll know why I’m placing him here. That little bit of beauty is enough to give this kid the confidence to start scoring again.

WVH Prediction: Columbus 1, Colorado 0

—————————————————————–

Chivas USA – at – FC Dallas

The league’s hottest team hosts one of the bottom of the barrel sides. I’ve seen a lot of Chivas-Dallas games over the last few years and one thing is always consistent in them, speed usually wins out. Dallas has plenty of that with the up and coming play of Jeff Cunningham, Atiba Harris and Brek Shea.

Dallas’ current 10-game unbeaten run could be in danger if the team overlooks Chivas here as they have a big one against Columbus next week. Its possibly a trap game but I like the way Dallas has been playing lately due to the MVP form of David Ferriera. They should be able to work the possession in their favor and get three more points out of this one.

Player to watch out for: Cunningham – He seems to be heating up yet again late in this season like he did in 2009. That could be dangerous for a Chivas defense that lets in its fair share of goals.

WVH Prediction: Dallas 2, Chivas 0

————————————————————-

New England Revolution – at – Kansas City Wizards

Two clubs hoping to stay in the playoff race in the east meet up this weekend in Kansas City. Both clubs have some scoring issues and Kansas City will be without rookie Teal Bunbury who is suspended for this one.

The Revs couldn’t do it in Chicago on Wednesday and I have a feeling they won’t get three points tomorrow in KC. The thing is the Wizards have a knack for dropping points they shouldn’t as well. This one smells like a draw to me.

Player to watch out for: Marko Perovic – Can he be the spark the Revs need in this one?

WVH Prediction: Kansas City 0, New England 0

————————————————————————-

Chicago Fire – at – Houston Dynamo

The Fire have to find a way to build off the New England win from earlier this week. The newcomers still need some time to gel with one another but things are looking up, very up for this club. Defensive issues still surround this club but I think that will turn around soon enough and Sean Johnson will be okay.

Houston is in the middle of the biggest funk they’ve ever been in since the club started playing in Houston. The 10-game bender isn’t helping their playoff chances, which continue to look worse each week. I think they’ll hold the Fire to a point though as Geoff Cameron starts to shine for them here at home.

Player to watch out for: Cameron – He’s the cog in the machine that keeps the Dynamo together, his addition to the midfield should help a shaky backline against an offense that is still coming together.

WVH Prediction: Houston 1, Chicago 1

——————————————————————

Sunday

Philadelphia Union – at – D.C. United

The battle for the wooden spoon hits the nation’s capital. I know Philly fans have been raging on D.C. all week which makes this new rivalry so much more interesting than I actually thought it would be. Let’s just hope a few more folks turn out at RFK this weekend to see this one.

D.C. will hope to get some revenge at home for the 3-2 loss back in April but I just don’t see D.C. having enough to do it. Sebastien Le Toux is too much to handle and Philadelphia should sneak in and get a rare road win.

Player to watch out for: Danny Mwanga – He’ll likely be one of the reasons why Philadelphia leaves D.C. with three points. He’s been a handful for everyone this season.

WVH Prediction: Philadelphia 2, D.C. 1
