Kraft Still Looking At Somerville For Stadium

I may be a day late talking about this but I blame that on last night’s Presidential debate. I won’t even go into my feelings on the economy or anything of that matter, but I do wonder what it will have on this possible project that the New England Revolution may be taking on.

It seems as though Bob Kraft, the owner of the Revs is looking to finally break away and place his club into its very own soccer stadium.

The Kraft Group is strongly considering whether to build a soccer stadium in East Somerville as a home for the New England Revolution, a move that would allow the team to raise its profile in the region and capitalize on a rich concentration of immigrant soccer fans.

Following the lead of other Major League Soccer clubs, the Kraft family wants to build a 20,000- to 30,000-seat soccer stadium – possibly in an industrial no man’s land that Somerville leaders want to turn into a vibrant commercial and residential district – and move the Revolution from Gillette Stadium, also owned by the Kraft Group, said Stacey James, a Kraft spokesman.

And putting the stadium, which could double as a concert venue, near a proposed Green Line stop would allow the team to more easily tap into the fervent soccer fan base in the region’s ethnically diverse urban neighborhoods.

“They make no bones about the fact that they want to be in the urban core, which is a smart move on their part, and we’re excited about it,” Joseph A. Curtatone, Somerville’s mayor, said.

Most would agree that getting the Revs into a smaller venue would be the right way to go even though they currently have a rent-free facility. The fact that Kraft is actually wanting to do this is a positive sign for an owner who is usually seen as tight with his money (something I sort of disagree with).

More than likely this is a long way away from actually happening but who knows, maybe in four or five years we could see the Revs open a brand new stadium.

Possible Revs Stadium Location Update

It’s starting to sounds like this is just another Boston suburb to check off the list for New England fans. We talked back in mid-July about the possibility of New England building a stadium in the Boston suburb of Somerville, which is located not too far out of the city.

This time however, the news doesn’t sound as good. The city is trying to work on it’s Inner Belt and the state may be screwing it up by mandating that a Maintenance Facility needs to be present on the site that they are expanding.

Space is already limited even though New England’s owner Bob Kraft is looking into the area for a stadium. We know the club is really in no rush to get out of their current stadium situation since its is ideal enough for the league, meaning they don’t pay rent like in some NFL stadiums.

I’m starting to wonder if the Revs will ever get their own stadium. The idea of a stadium close to Boston is almost too much to ask these days. Plus the cost of such a thing in that area is probably ridicous to begin with.

Do you think the Revs will ever get into a place of their own, one without football lines?
