As mentioned earlier today, lots of clubs are starting to clear off roster space for the summer months. Two clubs cleared out some room today.

DC United waived keeper Louis Crayton.

Crayton was on the block for a while to get released and it was really only a matter of time. As for Denton and Gray, I honestly I a feeling a few weeks back when the Quakes were in town visiting FC Dallas that both of them were possibly on the block. More so for Gray than Denton but it isn’t a total shock to see either waived here.

I fully expect more to come in the next couple of weeks as the summer transfer window will open up soon. Clubs will be looking to bring in new talent and you can expect these moves today are part of that.

I’m trying not to make this such a Columbus love fest here but when your hot it has to be noted and right now the Columbus Crew are indeed hot. The main reason is because of the way things are clicking on the offensive side of the ball and also to a degree on the defensive side of the ball.

One man though has been head and shoulders above the rest this past month and he is our player of the month.

WVH Player of the Month: Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Columbus Crew – Very little reason to not give it to GBS this month. Just absolutely dominated play for the Crew in August. They went 3-1 in the month, but the last three games were all about Schelotto. Three straight games with two assists and he also added a goal from the PK spot in one game. His league leading 16th assist on Saturday against Dallas gave the Crew a three game winning streak and the top spot in the league. That’s MVP quality right there.

WVH Coach of the Month: Frank Yallop, San Jose Earthquakes – What can you saw about the turn around out by the Bay? They haven’t lost since around the 4th of July and haven’t lost since the All-Star break. Not bad for an expansion club that wasn’t expected to contend. Yallop could be looking at Coach of the Year if he helps get his club into the playoffs.

WVH Best XI for August:

Keeper:

Louis Crayton, DC United: Three shutouts in four games…good enough for me.

Defense:

Bobby Boswell, Houston Dynamo: Been solid while others haven’t been for the Orange.

Nick Garcia, San Jose Earthquakes: Only gave up three goals this past month, but other than that they dominated in the back due to this veteran.

Chad Marshall, Columbus Crew: A couple goals were nice but the way he is handling business in the back is fun to watch.

Midfield:

Ronnie O’Brien, San Jose Earthquakes: Good to see O’Brien back into things these days. He’s healthy and happy, which is bad news for everyone else.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Columbus Crew: I really don’t have to explain this one.

Dave van den Bergh, New York Red Bulls: The stats may not be there but VDB has put together one solid campaign this season.

Javier Morales, Real Salt Lake: Quietly helping this club win games.

Forwards:

Darren Huckerby, San Jose Earthquakes: Could there be a bigger pickup anywhere this season than Huckerby? He’s a building his legacy here in the States just as he did in England.

Juan Pablo Angel, New York Red Bulls: Pretty much put life back into this club.

Landon Donovan, LA Galaxy: May have not had the best month but it was still better than most out there.

Just as reported earlier in the week, DC United is in discussions with an international keeper. This morning more details of who and where that keeper is from have come out thanks to Steve Goff. United is in talks with Liberian international Louis Crayton.

The 30-year old Crayton has spent the past 11 years in the Swiss leagues with eight different clubs, most recently with FC Basel as a backup.

The deal isn’t done yet according to Goff and his sources.

After looking over his career stats I have to question exactly how good of a signing this would be for the club. I know they want to push current starter Zach Wells and after they released keeper Jose Carvallo they had to create some competition.

What do you all make of this news? Is Crayton the right guy to push Wells?
