Crew Interested In Joe Public Speedster

Within seconds of defeating the New England Revolution on their own turf to move on in the CONCACAF Champions League, Trinidad and Tobago side Joe Public was already fielding offers from their hat-trick hero Gregory Richardson.

According to Goal.com, the Columbus Crew are said to be interested in the 26-year old striker that tourched the Revs last night in the 4-0 win.

When the Guyanese speedster was asked if he had been contacted by any MLS sides, he smiled. “Yes,” he said. “Only Columbus has expressed some interest.”

Eh, why not if you are the Crew. They’ve learned already that speed is what works in MLS and it will continue to do so down the stretch. Now I don’t think Richardson would be able to join the Crew this season but they could certainly add some speed and depth up top to their roster for next year if that is the case.

I don’t know how well Richardson would do in MLS but he may be worth taking a chance on if he can torch New England on their own turf like he did last night.

What do you all make of Columbus going after a guy like Richardson? Good move or just a waste of time to poke fun at their rivals?

Ugly Night For MLS

Two MLS clubs entered the CONCACAF Champions League preliminary rounds expecting to advance to the group stages. But after a home and away series both New England and Chivas USA were outed worse than anyone could have imagined.

New England lost on aggregate to Trinidad side Joe Public 6-1. OUCH.

Chivas lost on aggregate to Panamanian side Tauro 3-1. Double ouch.

What went wrong? A few things came to mind like the vast amount of injuries that both sides were plagued with going into the tournament. Or the fact that neither club had a break in their schedule to really get ready for this event. Or the fact that the MLS club aren’t deep enough in terms of roster sizes to compete in these kind of events.

I think these results should be an eye opener to the league that MLS clubs just aren’t on par as much as we thought they were with clubs like Tauro and Joe Public. Now the MLS clubs have better talent but when it comes to depth we are still getting beat all over the park by other clubs.

Also, this should be an eye opener that the league needs to refocus its priorities for this tournament and NOT SuperLiga. The league gave the four MLS clubs a schedule break in July for SuperLiga and not for the CCL. Its a shame too, even though the MLS clubs did very well in SuperLiga.

We still have two clubs left in this tournament but they start group play towards the end of the MLS season. Again, no break for them at that time.

So where and what went wrong for the MLS clubs in CCL? Will DC and Houston fair any better in the group stages?

CCL Games Tonight

A couple more preliminary matches in the CONCACAF Champions League tonight, both involving MLS squads.

New England Revolution and Chivas USA play host to Joe Public and Tauro FC, respectively. Tonight, they will either move on to the group stages of the competition or fade off into the sunset.

The Revs have the better shot at advancing after their 2-1 loss last week in Trinidad to Joe Public. That lone road goal would end up to be huge if the Revs can get on the board in this one. A goal by the visitors could spell big trouble for the Revs who are coming off a 2-2 draw to LA this past weekend.

Chivas has a bit of a hill to climb right now, in a 2-0 hole. It won’t be as simple as just scoring two goals either. Luis Bueno posted this info over at the Sideline Views about what Chivas has to look for tonight:

A 2-0 Chivas USA win would send the game to injury time.

A 3-1 Chivas USA win would send Tauro through (road goal edge).

If Tauro scores a single goal, that would ensure that the game would end in regulation no matter what.

Chivas USA will go through with a win by three or more goals regardless of how many goals Tauro scores.

Both club have their work cut out for them, that is for sure. I think the home advantage will come in to play though for each team helping each advance.

The New England game will be live on Fox Soccer Channel at 7pm CT, and the Chivas game will air on Galavision at 9pm CT (check your local listings).

What do you make of each club’s chances tonight? See both clubs moving on, just one and not the other, or neither?! Post your thoughts below.

MLS Clubs Drop Opening CCL Games

Not a good night for Major League Soccer on the international scene. Two games on foreign soil and two very ugly losses.

Chivas loses in Panama to Tauro 2-0.

New England loses in Trindad to Jack Warner’s Joe Public 2-1.

MLS clubs lost games to very small clubs. Not the big boys of CONCACAF like Pachuca or Olimpia, but teams that play in front of maybe 2,000 people on a good night.

Now, its not the end of the world for the Revs and the American Goats; they still get to host the second legs next week. New England is probably in better shape to advance to the group stage than Chivas is at this point. The Revs at least picked up a goal on the road in their 2-1 loss.

What did you all make of this opening round to the new CONCACAF tournament? Like it so far or are you just disappointed to not see the MLS clubs fair better on the road?
