2013 MLS Season, Week 12: What We Learned

There are plenty of points to go over from Week 12 in MLS. Both conferences saw games that helped tighten up each race. One quick look at the standings this morning and you’ll see that as the month of May draws to a end here, there is still a ton left to be played this season that will determine the playoffs and Supporters’ Shield.

Eight teams within six points of one another at the top of the table is pretty impressive to see. Eventually those games in hand by several clubs will come into play and be even more vital as this season rolls on.

All we know is summer is right around the corner which means things will really heat up in MLS. Here are some items that I took away from this weekend’s matches. Continue Reading →

2013 MLS Season, Week 12: Fantasy Recap

Some luck, better picks and overall improvement defined Week 12 for my side WVH AC in the MLS Fantasy Manager game. I made two changes that panned out for the most part for me and one of my subs got me two extra points when a starter didn’t play over the weekend.

In all, I’ll take the 75 points as it feels like an improvement over the last month in this game.

week12

With Philadelphia getting the double this past week, I made sure to have both of my Union players in the lineup. Neither did a whole lot in the loss to LA but the win over Chicago was enough to pull points from both Amobi Okugo and Jack McInerney.

I was disappointing to see Thierry Henry come up fairly short on the weekend against LA but his teammate Tim Cahill did get the game winner, very glad I stuck with Cahill in this game for another week. Same can be said about Will Johnson in Portland.

Defensively things were a little light on the week with Chris Schuler not playing and Jeb Brovsky off with Montreal. I brought in Tally Hall for Raul Fernandez of FC Dallas, that was a move that I thought would work better with New England coming into Houston but the four points was a tad disappointing as I’m sure all Houston fans feel the same. Still, it had to be better than what Fernandez brought in with Dallas losing 4-2 on the road in Seattle.

Speaking of the Sounders, it may be time to pick up a couple of those guys. Eddie Johnson had two goals and an assist on Saturday night while Lamar Neagle had a goal and assist. Neagle is cheap in this game so he may be worth the pick up but it all depends on if he can be as productive with Johnson out with the US National team here soon.

How did your club do this week? Any better or worse than the previous week?

MLS Expansion: Beckham, Chivas and More

Kind feel bad for these guys now. (Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports)

Kind feel bad for these guys now. (Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports)

I haven’t hopped on the MLS Expansion train in a few weeks so here it goes.

So let’s do a little recap shall we?

Orlando:

The bill in Florida for stadium money fell through a couple weeks ago. It wasn’t something that was absolutely vital for the expansion plans of this group but it certainly slowed the progress down.

Orlando City is still pushing for a stadium and will more than likely get it. My bet is that it just take a tad longer than they wanted it to in the end. Before, they would have had shovels in the ground this year but now I’m not so certain that happens.

New York:

Everything is still pushing forward as far as this one is concerned. MLS still states NY is a priority for club number 20. No new word on Manchester City’s owners being the new owners of this club yet though. We’re still in that four-to-six week period though on the stadium news and everything else it seems.

Now for some new stuff that will certainly make this fun.

David Beckham’s retirement:

Okay, we’ve always known that Becks would be able to own a MLS team or be an investor in one someday. Given his retirement from the game we can easily expect those MLS-Beckham-Expansion talks to really heat up soon. His contractual rights from his first MLS contract allow him to invest and operate an expansion side for $25 million. Given how the last expansion club (Montreal) was in the neighborhood of $40 million, you can figure he’ll exercise those rights. He wants to, and other groups will want to line up with him on it since there will be a bit of a discount involved.

The big question is where will he land with a club? Miami? Orlando even? Atlanta? Somewhere else?

We know it won’t be New York, that has always been the case from day one according to his contract.

Chivas USA pending sale?:

Naturally MLS will deny anything from this situation in Southern California but it looks like Chivas USA may be gone sometime soon in the form of either relocation, new owners, re-branding or all of the above.

MLS desperately needs to address the Red-and-White’s situation, but it must do so carefully. It is all just a matter of time before investor/operator Jorge Vergara dumps this sinking ship in LA. He already has his Mexican team for sale and we know that it is Carlos Slim, one of the world’s richest dudes, that is lined up to buy. The thing is, Slim doesn’t want the MLS outfit. Nor should he.

I’ve been hearing plenty on this and a couple of my sources say that should a sale go through on Chivas USA, they’ll be relocated. It all comes down to who would buy the team though. MLS will likely assume the ownership of the team and could even do so very soon. From there they’ll be on the look for potential buyers.

Where would they go if they get relocated out of LA? A shortlist from my sources include: Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Atlanta, Nashville and Charlotte. But don’t sleep on San Antonio or Minnesota either.

Lastly, there is Sacramento. That’s my dark horse candidate for you all. They’ve been making real strides in that city to get soccer going on the lower levels (new team starts up next year I believe). Nothing is definite on that one but just a small hunch.

I know there are talks that relocation could happen but league sources has told me before that they are committed to making a second club in LA work no matter what. I’ve been told many times before, the league does not want to relocate a club unless it is the only option.

I’ve always been vocal on relocation of this franchise. I’ve stated before that I don’t like the idea of the league losing their second club in LA but the more we get into this the more it looks like they will. Just too many cities out there that want a MLS team and that will do a better job with it than what Chivas USA has been able to do over these last few years.

I have plenty of other things to get to today both here and on BigDSoccer.com, so forgive me for being a tad quick with the introduction to this post. I’m hoping to dive into some expansion talk at some point today on here so stay tuned.

Now, let’s get down to the picks that are certain to be very wrong by Sunday night.

2013 MLS Season, Week 12: What To Watch For

FC Dallas hopes to prove their worth in Seattle this weekend. (Steven Bisig-US PRESSWIRE)

FC Dallas hopes to prove their worth in Seattle this weekend. (Steven Bisig-US PRESSWIRE)

It is already Thursday in these parts. No complaints from this guy that this week has moved forward quickly here. MLS had one midweek game that ended rather one sided last night as LA dominated the Philadelphia Union late in the second half to the tune of a 4-1 scoreline. Yeah, didn’t see that explosion coming on the road from the Galaxy like that.

Time to move into the weekend schedule. We have two rivalry games with one sort of wanna-be rivalry on tap for this weekend. In all we have some good games to go over.

Here are some quick points that Ill be keeping watch over the weekend.

US Open Cup Third Round Draw Is Out

Boy things look real interesting for the 16 MLS clubs in the 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Several clubs could open up on the road thanks to today’s draw for the third round pairings.

MLS could have 11 of its 16 clubs start out on the road should certain clubs win in the second round. Dallas, San Jose, Chivas and LA will be on the road no matter what.

Home teams are determined by a random selection process from among those clubs that have applied to host and whose venues meet the minimum tournament requirements.

2013 Rookie Watch: Plenty Of Minutes In Week 11

With so many games in Week 11 in Major League Soccer, the minutes were there for the taking for the rookie class. Several saw the full 90 in at least one game while two players saw the full 90 in two games.

New England’s Andrew Farrell and FC Dallas Homegrown London Woodberry both managed to go the full 90 in both games last week for their respective clubs. Farrell has obviously gobbled up plenty of minutes this season but this was the first time Woodberry has started a game all year for Dallas, but now he’s done it twice.

I wrote a little more about Woodberry over at BigDSoccer.com yesterday. Go check it out.

Elsewhere in MLS, four rookies scored this week including the first of probably many goals by LA Homegrown Gyasi Zardes. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, keep an eye out for that kid. He’s got talent by the buckets full.

Here is how the rest of the rookies did in Week 11.

Boy, Week 11 blew right by us didn’t it? With 15 games stretched across the entire week and weekend, a lot happened throughout the league.

Lately I have been doing my weekend recaps in a bullet point fashion but with so many games this past week, I think it is best to give a good overview of what happened in general in the league and how it effects things going forward this season.

I may still do some bullet points later on some of the games. We’ll just see if there is time for that later today or not.

2013 MLS Season, Week 11: Fantasy Manager Recap

Week 11 in MLS involved a lot of double action for a lot of MLS squads. With that meant a big opportunity for double points in the MLS Fantasy Manager game. Most weeks I would be thrilled with a 72 point outing but I have to admit, I’m a tad disappointed in this result. I was under the game’s average for the week and some of my guys that had two games on the schedule didn’t play in both the midweek and weekend game.

Oh well.

week11

Thankfully Will Johnson and Jack McInerney were able to give me some weekend points. Graham Zusi had a decent week for KC but it really didn’t reflect in the Fantasy Manager game.

I’m also fairly sure I will get more points because Jeb Brovsky had an assist in the RSL game on Saturday. So that may help bring the total up over the game average for the week. I suppose we’ll have to wait until Wednesday when the points get adjusted to see if that really happens or not here.

How did your squad do this week? Better than average with the double schedule?
