Dallas and Davino Part Ways

Some news that is actually good news for FC Dallas fans. The hefty contract on the books is now no more as FC Dallas and Mexican defender Dulio Davino are parting ways according to Dallas GM Michael Hitchcock.

“Duilio is a great professional who has enjoyed a storied career,” said Hitchcock. “He brought a great deal of experience and leadership to FC Dallas that will benefit our younger players for years to come. We wish Duilio all the best in the next chapter of his career.”

Honestly this is the best for both parties as Davino was never the defender he once was in Mexico. Most felt he was too slow for the MLS game and honestly he never really fit into the Dallas system once Schellas Hyndman took over.

With a big contract off the books now I would imagine Dallas will go out and try to sign another center back to replace Davino and possible use the rest of that money to either bump up some current contracts to to hold off on a Designated Player.

Davino is said to head back to Mexico here.

Lame Promotion

Last year here in Dallas we all knew it would come before long, the Juan Toja wig night. It came with plenty of press and hype and in a way it didn’t disappoint all that much.

Flip forward a year later and we expected another wig night with Toja still on board this season but a transfer to Romania put a stop to that possibility of improving on last year’s promotion. So what does FC Dallas do with all of those wigs that they ordered in honor of Toja? Change the player on the promotion, that’s what.

I received this update in my inbox earlier this week for the Dallas-DC game at the end of September. (thanks to a couple readers for pointing it out because I actually deleted the email!)

First 5,000 fans through the gates receive a Duilio Davino Wig courtesy of Telefutura.

Davino? Are you kidding me? Sure Davino has some nice hair (?) but certainly not the flowing mane that Toja had. Plus Davino wears a head band on his head. You should never have a wig promo centered around a dude that wears a head band. At least put a head band with the wig to make it legitimate. Its a lame attempt to recreate a good promotion from a year ago.

Why not a SuperCooper night (which I think they are doing?). Or a Jeff Cunningham night were the first 100 get a free jersey style t-shirt with Cunningham’s famed 101 number on the back?

Nice try Dallas, I think its a lame attempt to salvage some money that you spent on someone else.

The Good Signings, 2008 Edition

Over last weekend I brought to you a list of players that just didn’t cut it or have it this year. Guys that were brought in expecting to start in some cases and contribute to their club’s run at a MLS Cup this season. Those guys didn’t work out but some signings from the offseason did and are still going strong as we speak.

Let’s face it though, no signing in this offseason had any sort of impact like the 2007 edition. We had plenty of excitement from guys like Blanco, Schelotto, Juan Toja, Juan Pablo Angel and so on and so forth.

This year wasn’t as big. Talent did come into the league but not in a high rate like last year. Hell some would even argue that David Beckham belongs in this year’s bunch since he was injuried for the majority of his first season in Major League Soccer. While I won’t count GoldenBalls in this year’s bunch he would indeed lift up this class of signings.

I think this year’s signings can go in a couple categories. Ones that didn’t work out or aren’t really working out, ones that are good but aren’t great and ones that are doing well with their clubs.

Then there are a couple that should be counted, like Beckham in this year’s bunch that won’t because they were brought on late last year. And finally you have a couple guys that returned to the league like Amado Guevara and Ramiro Corrales who have made a positive impact.

SO who has exactly worked out well for their clubs this year? I have the list for you. As always feel free to pipe in your comments on the list and add ones that I’ve missed. Continue Reading…
