Confederations Cup Players Added To Gold Cup Roster

Instead of bringing up some more MLS guys looking for their first shot with the Nats or some guys in need of finding their form again, Bob Bradley has called on seven Confederation Cup players to fill out the additional seven roster spots for his Gold Cup roster.

Here is the list:

Jozy Altidore
Jonathan Bornstein
Conor Casey
Ricardo Clark
Benny Feilhaber
Brad Guzan
Sacha Kljestan

These seven players will not be traveling with the 23-man U.S. Gold Cup squad, but will join the team for specific games during the tournament. I honeestly don’t know how that will work but I am guessing some of the west coast guys will join the team when they play in Seattle and others will join when they are in the east coast playing in DC or in Boston.

Are you happy with these additions or wish some other guys got a shot at this tournament?

US-Spain Thoughts

Could this be the biggest win ever for the US? (Getty Images)

Could this be the biggest win ever for the US? (Getty Images)

Boy what a thriller huh? If you called a 2-0 win over Spain for the US you should probably be well on your way to an island somewhere celebrating your winnings. No one honestly called that kind of a win for the US today. Sure some had hopes of that kind of result but truth be told you’d be kidding yourself if you thought it would actually happen.

But looking back on the game I can honestly say this was the best performance from the entire team as a whole in a long time. It’s been a very long while since I’ve seen the US national team play so well for 90 minutes and not give up anything too stupid or costly.

Consider this, the Spanish put their best squad out there today and gunned for the win. Its not like some past wins in this tournament where the world power didn’t care. Today they cared and the US were able to take it to them. While I don’t think this makes us a world power or anything just yet I do believe it will help get us to that next level that we as a country have been reaching for a while here.

A big thing today was the level of passion and intensity on the field from the US. I have to give credit all around the field because the defense stepped up like never before and the offense did just enough to annoy the Spanish defense to get the two goals. Maybe it had something to do with Carlos Bocaengra wearing the captians armband once again, or maybe it had something to do with the level of respect that US were not getting from the start.

I kind of believe the US just delievered the world a blueprint to beating Spain. Hold them tigh defensively and press the crap out of them when the chances are there.

Also the possession was there more so for the US than expected. They weathered the storm of corner kicks and Tim Howard came up huge with needed. Oquchi Onyewu and Jay DeMeirt had one of their best games each in defense, they were constantly clearing everything that came in their way.

Just how good were the two US goals too? Jozy Altidore and his strong possesional play to score his first goal and Dempsey’s hammering home of the second game late in the second half. Landon Donovan really set up the second goal were as good play from Charlie Davis and Michael Bradley helped fuel the first.

I know a lot of folks hammered Bob Bradley last week but this lineup worked well for the US today. Some would have liked subs brought on earlier in the second half but he picked his moments right today when he did bring on fresh legs. Also speaking of those fresh legs I thought he did an excellent job of picking the right guys off the bench to come on for the game. Benny Feihaber came on first for US and I thought he was the best sub of the game. Conor Casey late for Altidore was a smart move as Casey is big, strong and able to hold possession well.

In all this will definitely go down as one of the biggest wins in US soccer history. Bigger than the Brazil win in the Gold Cup a decade ago, and bigger than the Portugal win in 2002.

Now on to the final on Sunday. Do you all think the US has any magic left for the final?

Feilhaber Signs With Danish Club

U.S. Olympic team midfielder Benny Feilhaber has completed a move to Danish club AGF Aarhus, leaving English club Derby County for his third European team in three seasons. The move means he will not be signing with Major League Soccer and the New England Revolution.

This just shows in the end the league could not compete with Aarhus and teams in Denmark for his services. Financial terms of Feilhaber’s agreement with the Danish club have not been disclosed. He now joins fellow american Jeremiah White at the Danish club.

As much as I was hoping he would return to the States and play in MLS I am happy to see him get another shot in Europe. After this past year with Derby County its safe to say any move out of England would be good for him at this point.

What do you all make of this? Sad to hear he isn’t coming to MLS or happy to see him get another shot in Europe?

Feilhaber Update

Just when things look like they can happen, they take a turn.

Steve Goff is reporting this evening that US National team midfielder Benny Feilhaber will not be joining MLS with New England but will indeed be signing on with Danish side Aarhus.

“He had his medical and, if all of the final details are agreed, he will sign in the morning,” Yorks told the Insider.

So its a wait and see kind of thing but this all sounds like Feilhaber will not be with the Revs. Tough break for the Revs if you ask me and for the league. I was hoping to see the 2007 Gold Cup hero play in the States. Still good for him though to be staying in Europe if that’s what he is wanting to do.

I will try to keep an eye on this tomorrow to see if this deal goes down in Denmark.

Feilhaber In Talks With MLS?

U.S. Olympic team midfielder Benny Feilhaber is in talks with Major League Soccer about a move that could land him in the league with the Revs.

This all according to SBI, Feilhaber and the league are in talks over a potential three-year deal have him joining the Revs, which are currently sitting atop the allocation list after the Galaxy recently put in an allocation claim on U.S. midfielder/defender Eddie Lewis and Colorado claimed former U.S. national team defender Cory Gibbs.

The Revs do have the cap space to sign Feilhaber. The Revs recently acquired allocation money and also moved up in the MLS Allocation List thanks to its trade of Pat Noonan’s rights to the Columbus Crew. That move could end up being one of the smarted deals Steve Nicol has ever made here. Don’t forget that the Revs are also about to sign Costa Rican defender Gabriel Badilla here soon too.

Just think about this possible move for a second. Some people may not like Feilhaber but I think if you slide him into that midfield there is no stopping New England this year. They are already too good as it is in the midfield and the addition of him with the likes of Shalrie Joeseph, Maurico Castro, Steve Ralston, and Jeff Larentowicz and this may be the best midfield in the league.

The 23-year old is set to leave former EPL side Derby County after one miserable season with the recently relegated club. Reports had linked him to a move to Danish club AGF Aarhus, but from what I’m being told he wants to return to the States, no other real reason is given but the kid is young and maybe after this past year he decided he had enough of the European lifestyle.

I will keep an eye on this deal and let you know if anything else comes out of it in the next couple of days. With the US out of the Olympics we could see this deal get pushed a little quicker if he does indeed sign with the league.

What do you think of Feilhaber potentially signing with MLS? And how about what could be the New England midfield if he does? Sounds like the rich getting richer here.
