With the transfer window set to close next week, clubs are racing, and I mean racing, to get deals done here. I’ve seen today that Seattle is hoping to get some deal done while Chivas USA is hoping to land a much bigger fish..er…yeah.

Chivas is hoping to sign Freddy Adu as their club’s next Designated Player. Yes, I kid you not, that is what they want to do.

The LA-based club is hoping Adu is the final piece to the puzzle to help push this club into the playoffs and to help be a centerpiece for the club should they get their own stadium.

Adu currently has one year remaining on his contract with Benfica, but the club is said to be ready to let Adu walk away from his contract. Benfica had been loaning out Adu to various clubs throughout Europe since 2007.

Chivas had passed on Benny Feilhaber earlier this season in hopes that a bigger star would be coming back to the US to sign with MLS. Adu fits that bill for them and if he does end up getting a DP contact the club could possibly by-pass the Allocation System for signing Adu and remain the top club in the order.

If that is the case the club could go after another returning US player. Fox Soccer is suggesting Eddie Johnson.

I love this move for Chivas and Adu if it does take place. Chivas gets a creative player that they need in their midfield (and possible a solid striker if that Johnson thing would come to pass). Its a big gamble for both sides but for a young guy like Adu, it gets him the playing time he desperately needs. Plus it doesn’t hurt that LA is Jurgen Klinsmann’s backyard and all.

Below is what I’ve been able to gather as the current MLS Allocation Order for 2010. Remember DC moved swapped with Philly to get the top spot to get Troy Perkins so they are now at the bottom of the order.

Goff said that his sources tell him that the 22-year old midfielder has signed a contract with the league and is awaiting allocation by the front office.

This is where it gets interesting if he is coming back to the league. Dallas holds the top spot in the allocation order right now, followed by DC and Colorado. If you are Dallas do you take the 22-year old or pass in hopes to get something a little better this summer? Honestly I don’t see a need for him for Dallas right now. They already have too many midfielders and adding another one that would probably sit on the bench more so with the way Schellas Hyndman coaches makes little sense.

No word on if DC or Colorado are even interested in him if Dallas were to pass. Honestly I wouldn’t be shocked to see all three pass on him meaning KC would be next in line. A move to KC kind of fits if you ask me, if not then Chivas would be next, another solid fit.

So does DC or Colorado trade up to get the top spot or will there be another team that steps in and makes a deal with Dallas? If you are Columbus do you trade up for your former midfielder?

I’ve had a couple e-mails recently asking about the Allocation order in Major League Soccer. I figured since the summer transfer window is set to open up in the middle of July that we should revisit the current order.

Dallas is still on top, followed by DC and Colorado. Even with Dallas at the top I have a good feeling that they won’t be using that top spot first. However it really just depends on the player that comes into the allocation system and where they want to play. There are a couple names out there like Freddy Adu, Stern John, and a couple others that could be returning to MLS this summer.

Remember once a club uses their allocation position to sign a player that goes through the allocation system that the league has set up, they are then dropped to the bottom of the order. Nothing has changed since LA signed Gregg Berhalter back in April.

If you find any mistakes let me know but I am pretty certain this is the new current order.

1. FC Dallas
2. DC United
3. Colorado Rapids

The Earthquakes used their position at the top of the allocation order to get Convey. The team now drops to the bottom of the allocation rankings.

“It is rare to be able to acquire a U.S. international in the prime of his career,” said General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle. “When he became available we jumped at the opportunity to add him to our team. He is a great attacking player who will make an immediate impact, and our fans will enjoy watching him.”

Most of you know my feelings on the deal. Its a good move for the Quakes, who have really had a solid offseason in my opinion. They kept a core of their strong defense and improved most of the areas that needed work on.

The San Jose Murcery News is reporting the club is close to signing midfielder Bobby Convey.

A Major League Soccer source confirmed the deal is almost complete for Convey, who has been playing at Reading in the English league since 2004. The source declined to be identified because some of the paperwork has to be finalized.

Convey, who played for the United States in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, last competed in MLS with DC United.

We will probably know more about this possible deal in the morning.

If the Quakes do get to sign Convey it means they will have to use their top allocation spot to do so.

I like this deal for San Jose as long as Convey stays healthy. Its a move he needs to make really to get back in favor with the US National side and it’s manager Bob Bradley. I think it worked well for a guy like Cory Gibbs when he came back from Europe to MLS last year. I see it happening the same way for Convey if he stays healthy.

More details will follow soon….

Earlier this month we talked about San Jose’s interest in the midfielder. SBI is reporting this evening the Galaxy are also interested to try to bring the injury prone midfielder to the Home Depot Center.

LA is looking at the growing possibility that both Landon Donvan and David Beckham could be headed back to Europe this winter, making this move all the more needed.

What is standing in the way is San Jose’s current position in the allocation order. The Quakes are number one while LA sits in second place in the order. Do the Quakes really want Convey or are they more interested to get a deal worked out with the Galaxy here? Reports suggest the Quakes are set to sign an international forward in the coming weeks.

Getting some extra allocation money from LA might be enough to make the deal happen. Not to mention the Quakes would only have to move one spot down only to move back up to the top if LA does indeed claim Convey in the allocation process.

I still think like some people out there that Convey will return next year to MLS and sign with the expansion side in Philly. Its a move that makes sense for both parties but a move to the league a year early could be fine too. Philly may want to make a trade or Convey could work a deal in his contract if he really wants to play there (similar to what Nate Jaqua did in Houston to get to Seattle).

Think Convey will be in MLS this year or will he come back in 2010?
