2013 MLS Season, Week 1: Player of the Week

Now that I am a member of the North American Soccer Reporters, I am participating in the voting that handles the league’s Player of the Week and Month awards.

This week was a bit of a no brainer in my book. Out of the 29 votes tallied, only four folks decided not to vote for LA Galaxy midfielder Mike Magee. The veteran took home more than enough votes to secure the season’s first player of the week award.

I also had Graham Zusi as my number two pick on the week. Had Magee not ran up the Fire with three goals, I wouldn’t have even thought twice about voting Zusi in. If we were asked to do a third pick, that would have gone Alvaro Saborio’s way.

Patience and better execution. Those were the two resounding comments that MLS Commissioner Don Garber stated when asked over the weekend during his four-city tour about Chivas USA.

Garber addressed the topic more in depth on Sunday in Los Angeles, telling the local media there that the league has begun to intervene to help the club improve its brand awareness in Southern California.

“What I would encourage everyone to have is a bit of patience,” Garber said at halftime of the LA Galaxy’s 4-0 win over the Chicago Fire. “They have an idea, they have a plan. We’re hopeful that plan will be successfully executed. I think they need to do better in the execution.

“They need to put some real good resources on the administrative side, and get really focused,” he added. “The league has been working with them – one of our club services guys has been working with them to try and help them on the ticketing side, and help them understand some of the best practices going on with our other clubs.” Continue Reading →

2013 MLS Season, Week 1: What We Learned

Opening week was fun, especially in places like Portland. (Jaime Valdez-USA TODAY Sports)

Ah, it was great to have MLS soccer in person again over the weekend. There is something about a new season that just has a lot of sparks and excitement surrounding it. There were nine games total on the opening weekend and while some of them ended up being duds, we did have a few that were highly entertaining.

A record four teams won on the road on the opening weekend of the 2013 MLS season. I’ll get to some of the games here in a moment. Only one draw on the weekend, and it was a wild one too. Three teams won by a 1-0 scoreline, two did it with a 2-0 score.

So now that the dust has settled, it is time to figure out some things we didn’t know before the weekend started. And maybe some things that we did. Continue Reading →

2013 MLS Season, Week 1: Fantasy Recap

We’re back for another season of MLS Fantasy Manager. I contemplated long and hard at ding this again this season but in the end I couldn’t resist another go at it.

For a couple weeks I’ve been tweaking my roster and starting line up, even up to the last second. That last second switch came back to bite me in the ass though.

I made two switches on the last day, removing Robbie Keane and Federico Higuain for Chris Wondolowski and Will Bruin. An even swap on the transfer market in terms of salary numbers. The result, wasn’t as good as I had hoped for. Continue Reading →

Ah, it is Friday so you know that means it is prediction time.

There are already a slew of content posted previewing the new season. You can also find anything related to Week 1 here as well. I’ll try to keep the link format similar to that all season long.

Time to get down to the predictions for this weekend’s slate of games. Every club is in action except for the New England Revolution (boo unbalanced number of teams).

As always, feel free to post your predictions for this weekend’s games below in the comments section or on our Facebook page.

Dwayne De Rosario Suspended For Two Matches

A fun way to start out the Eve of the 2013 MLS Season.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee has suspended D.C. United forward Dwayne De Rosario for two games and fined him an undisclosed amount for violent conduct that endangered the safety of his opponent, Philadelphia Union midfielder Danny Cruz, during a preseason game between the clubs on Feb. 23. The referee issued De Rosario a red card for violent conduct in the 60th minute of the match.

The MLS Players Union appealed the decision on behalf of De Rosario. MLS Commissioner Don Garber heard the appeal yesterday and upheld the Disciplinary Committee’s decision.

De Rosario will serve his suspension this Saturday when D.C. United opens its season against Houston Dynamo and on March 9 when D.C. hosts Real Salt Lake.

I wonder if this is the first player to be suspended for an season opener due to a preseason game. Just an interesting story line to watch out for this weekend.

2013 MLS Season, Week 1: What To Watch For

Ah…we’re back. The MLS season is here after what felt like a really short break. Like I’ve discussed with several folks around the league, the offseason really isn’t nearly as long as it use to be or feel. Before it seemed to take ages to get from November to March but now, it only seems like a blink of an eye.

Just as in seasons before, Thursdays usually mark the start of the week’s previews around these parts. I like to spread my posts out a bit by doing a longer preview on Thursday followed by game predictions on Friday. Two posts, two days, and hopefully enough information for you all to take into the weekend.

I still have my bold season predictions for tomorrow to write but so be on the look out for those.

Just like I have linked in several posts this week, to find all of my season preview material, look no further than to this link right here.
