Top Moments of 2012

Normally I never do lists like this but I’m in the holiday spirit still even after Christmas. The end of 2012 is upon us and I’ll admit, this has been a very interesting but good year in MLS.

Below are some of the top moments I came up with from this past year. Feel free to add your’s in below. Mine are in no particular order either – for whatever that is worth.

- The Goonies of San Jose run wild. No one predicted this at the start of the year. I mean no one. The San Jose Earthquakes ran all over MLS in 2012. Chris Wondolowski tied the all-time regular season goal scoring mark with 27(!) goals. I had written this club off after a disappointing 2011, but they bounced back and proved me and everyone wrong about them.

- LA repeats. While MLS is changing and improving each and every year, one thing remains the same until the playoff format improves – you get hot late and you’ll be rewarded. For the LA Galaxy they were really the league’s top side from late July on though. Not many took them nearly as serious as they should have late in the year but the writing was on the wall for a repeat once the playoffs hit. There was too much talent and skill not to repeat. David Beckham goes out of MLS a champion finishing his storybook career with the Galaxy.

- Montreal joins the fold. The 19th MLS club has been a successful one up in Montreal. We all figured the Impact would be a good addition to the league but I honestly see them as a great one. Their games at the Olympic Stadium were great and once they opened up Saputo Stadium, things got rolling as the expansion side nearly reached the playoffs in their inaugural season.

- Houston opens up their new home. BBVA Compass Stadium seemed like a pipe-dream a couple years ago in Houston but now it is way more than that. The Dynamo opened up their new digs this summer and ended up making it a fortress of their own, going unbeaten there. Just three more stadiums to go with San Jose already putting shovels in the ground. D.C. and New England will get there, I have faith they will.

- Key players return from nasty injuries. While 2011 was the year of the injury, 2012 was the year of the returns. Steve Zakuani finally came back in Seattle, did well, and even proved that he still has a ton to offer. David Ferreira came back in the summer to help guide FC Dallas back into the playoff haunt. Others like Chris Pontius and Alan Gordan also came back from injuries that ended their 2011 season early to good form in 2012.

- Discipline committee reigns over it all. No one was safe from the MLS DC in 2012. One wrong move on the field and you could expect a fine or a suspension. Many complained about the way the MLS DC handed down their suspensions and sometimes the timing of them were not great for certain clubs but one thing is certain, it is keeping everyone on their toes about acting proper.

- SKC ends Seattle’s USOC run. This one was a fun one to watch, and selfishly I wanted a repeat of it in the MLS Cup. That didn’t happen however. Sporting KC ended up hosting the USOC final against the Seattle Sounders and took full advantage of it in the process as they claimed their first trophy in nearly a decade, ending the Sounders run at four straight USOC titles.

- Cascadia Cup fun. We got used to what the Cascadia Cup could be in 2011 but boy did it get so much more intense in 2012 as the Portland Timbers won the trophy. The big moment was still seeing 67k fans in Seattle for the Sounders-Timbers match. No one will forget the giant tifo displays between the Sounders and Timbers in their home meetings with one another.

- The sagas in Philly and Toronto. Boy, we were all wrong about the Philadelphia Union and Toronto FC going into 2012. I didn’t expect greatness out of each club but I thought Toronto was a playoff team. Boy was I dead wrong on that. Both fired their managers early on and neither did very well in the end. Toronto’s saga was more interesting as it took some crazy twists and turns. Philadelphia appears to at least be getting back on course for 2013.

- MLS eyes NY expansion. Sure, this one has been talked about a lot on this blog but it’s worth another mention in the list to end the year. MLS announced their big intentions about placing a second club in New York, their 20th team for a potential start in 2016. They got the money for a stadium and are now looking for a big time owner to step up and take over. Gotta think 2013 will be all about that story and actually building this stadium in Queens.

2012 WVH MLS Best XI

And we’re back from the Turkey Day weekend. I hope all of you had a nice weekend. The four day weekend was much needed here for me and now we move forward into the big week, MLS Cup week!

Later today the league will be unveiling their Best XI for the season, so I figured today would be a good day to finally release mine as well. Should any big news break from Don Garber’s State of the League address this afternoon, I’ll be sure to add it in here.

So here we go, the WVH Best XI for 2012. I decided to go with a 3-4-3 formation, something I used here and there in the fantasy manager game this season too!

Keeper: Jimmy Neilsen (Sporting KC)

I went back and forth on the keeper selection. Many good keepers in the league this year but Neilsen was head and shoulders above the rest in my book. He helped SKC win a lot of games and at the end of the day, that is what you want in the top keeper.

Defenders: YP Lee (Vancouver Whitecaps), Victor Bernardez (San Jose Earthquakes), and Matt Besler (Sporting KC)

Tough three to pick from but these three stood out the most. Lee was a beast for Vancouver and though while some will argue that Jay DeMerit was better for Vancouver, I felt Lee’s ability to get forward made him a great asset this season. He was clearly one of the league’s best fullbacks. Bernardez and Besler were two of the best defenders in the league, hands down this season. Besler won the Defender of the Year for me and for from the league. Bernardez probably helped San Jose win more games than he is really credited for.

Midfielders: Osvaldo Alonso (Seattle Sounders), Graham Zusi (Sporting KC), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy) and Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo)

The midfield seemed tough to select at first but the more I really looked at everything the more these four stood out.

Alonso is clearly one of the top, if not the top, defensive midfielder in all of MLS. He had a fantastic season with the Sounders.

Zusi’s coming out party continued into 2012 with his best performance yet. He helped guide SKC to a US Open Cup and another Eastern Conference crown. He also lead the league in assists, which is pretty impressive given his club’s offensive struggles in 2012.

Davis is well, there isn’t much you can say that is bad about him. He got a little more help this season but overall he was still as dominate as ever in the Houston midfield.

Donovan was once again Donovan, even with the injury issues. His stats weren’t monstrous as they’ve been in the past but his ability to lead his club is still impressive.

Forwards: Chris Wondowloski (San Jose), Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy) and Thierry Henry (New York)

I nearly went with a forth defender instead of Henry but at the last second I stuck to the 3-4-3 instead. Wondo and Keane were easy picks for me, both were amazing this season.

Oh boy, here we go.

Major League Soccer today announced the finalists for its 2012 postseason awards. The winners for each award will be revealed in the coming weeks.

  • Current MLS players
  • MLS Clubs (Coaches, Technical Directors, Chief Business Officers and PR/Community Relations)
  • Media members who covered MLS regularly in 2012

I list this line from the MLS release so you know who voted here. It wasn’t just media folks like myself. Players and people from each team voted as well.  Continue Reading →

MLS Attendance Up, Now 7th In the World

Time for some positive news before we get into the playoff discussion (full predictions coming up later today).

Attendance for Major League Soccer reached a new high in 2012. The league beat last year’s mark by nearly 1,000 per game. In fact, with an average attendance of 18,807, MLS ranks seventh in the world.

Woohoo!

It’s been discussed recently too that for the first time ever, the league had more than 6 million people attend their games this season. Double woohoo!

Once again the Seattle Sounders were the top dogs in the attendance game, achieving new high-marks in attendance by crushing their own record for a third straight year by averaging 43,144 fans.

Attendance is a positive sign that the league is growing in the US. TV ratings and overall revenue of the 19 clubs are still not where folks would like them to be but they are rising slowly here (at least based on what some folks from the league are telling me, I don’t have any specifics on actual revenue numbers here for those curious). All positive signs.

MLS Totals 18,807 18,378.5 6,074,729 323 4.97%

**Table above came from SBnation.com, kudos to those guys for putting this together**

Some quick notes:

  • How about that total number for Seattle? 733,441! That’s freakin’ huge!
  • Montreal’s numbers are a tad higher due to a couple big sellouts at the Olympic Stadium. They have a good chance to do well next year though based on some numbers we saw down the stretch.
  • FC Dallas and Columbus (the two Hunt owned teams) saw better numbers in 2012. Still no where near where they should be but positive sign for the future. Dallas had the highest attendance numbers in FC Dallas Stadium history. Still looking to best their 1996 numbers however. Maybe in 2013.
  • We are seeing more clubs playing in front of sellouts or near sell outs. SKC played in front of a lot of standing-room only crowds. I think once San Jose opens their new stadium in 2014 we’ll see more of that out there.
  • New York dipped in attendance is puzzling but the front office shakeups will hopefully correct that. Still some perspective is that 18,000 average in front of a smaller nice stadium still beats playing in front of a 80% empty Meadowlands Stadium.
  • Chivas and Toronto took a big hit at the gates. Toronto for obvious reasons. Chivas lowered the capacity at the HDC and still saw a dip. Who knows when that club will get it right.
  • D.C. United also saw a big dip despite reaching the post season for the first time since 2007. I still fully expect them to get their stadium situation worked out in the future. Have to remain optimistic about that.

WVH 2012 MLS Awards

The goal king is also the MVP. (Getty Images)

The 2012 season has finished for Major League Soccer. We know who is in the playoffs and who is starting their off season campaigns. But all of this means it is the start of award season for MLS.

It started yesterday with the announcement of the Golden Boot winner. Obviously this is one award that isn’t voted on by members of the media, coaches, players or club front office folks. Chris Wondolowski scored 27 goals in the season and easily won the award this season.

I submitted my media vote for the awards and here is how I voted on things. Feel free to bash away at them, I know some of these votes will make some angry while others will agree with them. That’s the fun each year of voting season. Just try not to get too carried away with it all, I have one vote, not typically enough to sway things given out players, coaches, and front office people also get to vote on these as well. Media vote only counts for a third of the total.

The league gave you two options for each award but I’ll offer up an honorable mention or two with each.  Continue Reading →

2012 MLS Cup Playoffs Bracket Set

The playoffs are here! The playoffs are here! The playoffs are here!!!

The bracket is now set as we know where each of the 10 teams will begin their playoff run.

Which playoff series excites you the most here? For me seeing the Atlantic Cup in the playoffs sounds pretty good. As will a potential California Classico between San Jose and LA. Or maybe you are more interested in the Houston-Chicago series? All are going to be good in their own manner.

Naturally a lot can and will happen in the playoffs. I’ll go through each series (and potential series) later on this week in a preview of the playoffs. In that post I’ll include my predictions for each series as well as who I think will end up winning it all.

Until then feel free to discuss the playoffs here. There is a lot to be excited about now that the playoffs are finally here!

2012 MLS, Week 34: Predictions

New York hopes to avoid a collapse at PPL Park against the Union. (Getty Images)

Our final week of the season is here. I still find it hard to believe that we’ve blown through 33 games for nearly every club already.

This season finale will give us a couple of things, seeding for the rest of the Eastern Conference after Sporting KC, seeding between Seattle and RSL in the West and finally – if not most importantly – if Chris Wondolowski can break the league’s all-time scoring record in a single season.

There are plenty of games to predict as usual, so let’s get down to some predictions that will likely go horribly wrong once again.  Continue Reading →

2012 MLS, Week 34: What To Watch For

Chris Wondolowski goes for history in the final weekend of the season. (Getty Images)

The final week of the season is here. We’ve seen one team wrap up their season in convincing fashion (Sporting KC) while everyone else is sitting at 33 games on the year – waiting to finish out the season on a good note.

I’m going to keep this weekend preview rather short today. Due to the fact that no other teams can clinch playoff spots there really isn’t a ton to preview for this weekend. It all comes down to seeding in the East for the 2-5 spots and seeding in the West between Seattle and RSL for the 2 and 3 spots. Elsewhere it will be about prepping for 2013.  Continue Reading →

Examining the 10 Playoff Teams

San Jose and Kansas City lead their conferences but both could slip up in the playoffs. (Getty Images)

We may not know where each team will be seeded in this year’s playoffs just yet but we do know a thing or two about each squad. We know how they’ve gotten this far and how well they’ve done to achieve reaching the playoffs after a long season.

In MLS it is typically about how you get hot in the season and when you get hot. Teams that typically get hot late do well in the post season, if we look at the history of the league. But in this day and age in MLS it is also how well you start in the season. Most of the teams that qualified had a strong start to the season. Those who failed to reach the post season were likely hampered by a slow start or a long dry spell that they could not overcome.

As it stands today, I think there are some favorites to win it all. San Jose is an obvious one for their Supporters’ Shield win and given the talent they have offensively. Sporting Kansas City is another with their defense. But overall, each of the 10 has a shot and if they can get hot for four (five for those in the knockout round) games, anything is possible.

So here are reasons why each team can win MLS Cup and also reasons why each team could stumble on the path to glory. Continue Reading →

Making Sense of the Playoff Seeding

So many possibilities for only one week’s worth of games left. The Eastern Conference playoff race is done but the seeding will be sorted out this week.

Two teams are battling for first place, while all the other spots are totally up for grabs.

Sporting Kansas City can finish: East 1, East 2
D.C. United can finish: East 1, East 2, East 3, East 4
Chicago Fire can finish: East 2, East 3, East 4, East 5
New York Red Bulls can finish: East 3, East 4, East 5
Houston Dynamo can finish: East 3, East 4, East 5

The bottom four teams in that list are trying to avoid the knockout round game. No one wants to deal with an extra game at this point in this season, especially if it is a road game.

D.C. has to travel to Chicago this week while Philadelphia holds the keys for both Sporting KC and New York. Should SKC win their game against Philadelphia this Wednesday, they’ll lock up the Eastern crown. New York will hope to get a road win in Philadelphia this weekend to keep them out of the knockout round.

Anything can happen this week, let’s put it that way.

Out West it is a little clearer thankfully.

San Jose has obviously locked up the top seed being the Supporters’ Shield winners. The LA Galaxy will host the Vancouver Whitecaps in the knockout round.

The only thing left to be determined is who gets home field advantage between Seattle and Real Salt Lake. Both teams are tied at 56 points but Seattle holds the edge in the tiebreakers due to number of goals scored.

RSL hosts Vancouver this weekend while Seattle has a date on the road against the LA Galaxy. My money is on RSL taking the two seed with those games.
