With so few games this past week there really wasn’t a lot of change in the Power Rankings. Even with some wins for clubs near the bottom of the pack I just couldn’t punish those in SuperLiga play.

The only real movement was near the top-middle half of the order. This was mainly due to Colorado’s two game week that saw them draw Dallas at home (really could have been a loss) and a blowout loss at Seattle. I guess I jumped the gun with the Rapids too soon but I do still see plenty of quality in that club. But they do have company below them in the standings now with how RSL is starting to play. We could see a very good battle for forth in the west, which should end return be a playoff spot when things are all said and done this season.

The west is really strong right now while the east is just a traffic jam from top club to the sixth club. Only New York is out of contention here in the east (and overall for that matter).

Anyways, here is this week’s rankings.

Team

Rank (Last Week)

Record (W-L-T)

Comments

1 (1)

8-3-4 28 pts.

The set-back in LA isn’t going to be a big one. But the next few weeks during the Gold Cup could tell us a lot more about this squad.

2 (2)

8-4-3 27 pts.

Didn’t do well in SuperLiga, but let’s hope it doesn’t mean their in-league play will suffer as well. No one has played well enough to jump them right now anyways.

3 (4)

5-3-8 23 pts.

No games this past week but they rise due to poor play on Colorado’s part.

4 (5)

5-3-6 21 pts.

Advanced in SuperLiga and looked pretty good during the process.

5 (6)

6-3-7 25 pts.

Big time win over a conference rival. I’m not totally jumping on board in moving them ahead of DC or Chicago just yet. Still they are holding their own and that is a good sign for this bunch.

6 (3)

5-3-6 21 pts.

I gambled and jumped on this club’s bandwagon. A draw to Dallas at home and a blowout loss on the road to Seattle wasn’t a good start. Still this club has the quality to compete.

7 (7)

5-3-7 22 pts.

Another one that could have moved up due to a win but honestly a win over New York at home is nothing to get super excited about for anyone this season.

8 (8)

6-6-4 22 pts.

Nearly dropped this club but a blowout loss in Salt Lake isn’t the worst thing ever. Not many clubs come out of Rio Tinto looking good. But they absolutely dominated New York in the mid-week so they at least had something to show for this past week.

9 (9)

5-5-4 19 pts.

No MLS games this week due to SuperLiga. They weren’t the worst MLS club but they certainly weren’t the best.

10 (10)

4-4-4 16 pts.

Hard to believe this club has so many games in hand here. Honestly that’s a reason why they aren’t dropping, plus they looked solid in SuperLiga play.

11 (11)

5-6-4 19 pts.

Should they have moved up? Yes, but I do have a tough time buying into this team still even after a 3-0 win over Toronto. Something just feels like it is missing with this bunch.

12 (12)

3-3-9 18 pts.

Big time confidence win (without Landon Donovan) over Houston. Donovan Ricketts was a beast in goal too.

13 (13)

3-7-5 14 pts.

The game in Colorado should have been a win but this club just doesn’t know how to grind out a gritty performance here.

14 (14)

3-8-3 12 pts.

Good win over the Galaxy but not enough to move them up this week. Face it that wasn’t a win to get overly excited about here.

15 (15)

2-12-4 10 pts.

Just a brutal week. Two road losses. Of all the moves they should be making they go out and sign Bouna Coundoul. That isn’t going to solve a damn bit.

With only a few games to mention this past weekend there really isn’t a whole lot to go into here from week 15 in Major League Soccer. We had two blowouts, another Red Bull loss on the road, and a shocker out west in LA.

Still with those results and the few in SuperLiga there is still some things to talk about here.

Blowouts in Salt Lake and Seattle

One thing we can say is home play will become more vital down the stretch here this season. I do believe we are mostly done with our crazy run of draws in the season. Most clubs aren’t as evenly matched as they were a few months ago with some clubs getting healthy and some losing players to international call-ups and injuries.

That could be the case in the RSL-Toronto and Seattle-Colorado games. A month and a half ago I would have marked both of these as draws. I thought going into the weekend it would be that way in each even though my predictions said otherwise. The RSL result over Toronto didn’t shock me in the least. While I think Toronto is talented their road play suggests they still aren’t on the same level that some think they could be.

The Seattle result was a little more shocking to me. I really underestimated how Colorado would come out in this one and it looks like I got on the Rapids’ bandwagon too early here. Fredy Montero and Nate Jaqua proved to be way too much Sunday afternoon and it is possible to say that Seattle could be going into a path here this summer that could really set them up for a deep run later on this year.

RSL on the other hand needed this 3-0 result at home more than anything. While I know it is a loss to Toronto it didn’t impact their overall standings as much right now as it normally would. The east is still so tight with DC, Chicago, and Columbus playing solid; not to mention you also have to look out for New England and Kansas City still. RSL will have a tougher road getting up in the west. Houston, Chivas and Seattle are all above them and LA is right there in the standings with them right now too.

Crew Rebound Well

Quality result even if it were against the lowly Red Bulls at home for the Crew. The 1-0 win was much needed for Columbus as they move into second place in the east with a couple games in hand. Even if the win was over New York who didn’t play all that bad it still means a good bit of confidence going forward for the Crew. As long as Columbus can make some small roster moves this summer before the CONCACAF Champions League kicks off for them they could very well sneak up and win the east again this season after their slow start. With the way Guillermo Barros Schelotto has played this season it wouldn’t be a shock at all to this guy.

Galaxy Win A Must Need Game

Hard to label a game a must-win in the ladder part of June but for LA the win over Houston at home was a big time win right now for this club. First of all it was without Landon Donovan and it should be a springboard type of game in terms of confidence here. Winning without your best player is one thing but to do it against the league’s best team who had been riding a long unbeaten run is another thing.

Houston looked gassed to me for some reason last night. It wasn’t a terrible game for them but they didn’t pressure enough from their midfield in attack like they normally do. Plus a couple mental lapses caused the game’s lone goal. Kudos to Todd Dunivent for getting in the way and re-directing the short corner kick into the goal.

Butts-in-Seats:

Only four games but probably one of the best weekends for a four game menu the league has seen in a while. Seattle and Salt Lake have a lot to do with that. 32,000+ in Seattle for their win over the Rapids. And 18,000+ in Salt Lake for their 3-0 win over TFC. LA and Columbus also posted good numbers, 17,000+ for LA and 15,000+ for Columbus. Not bad for a busy soccer weekend that had more people fixed on the US over South Africa.

SuperLiga Talk:

I won’t go too into SuperLiga since I honestly watch none of it. Chicago and New England move on to face one another in the semi-finals. Two Mexican teams face off in the other semi-final. Either way we will get a US-Mexico final this year. That has to be good for the tournament organizers.

Yeah we actually are at week 15 here. Hard to believe huh? This weekend is fairly light due to a number of other games going on like SuperLiga. Then you have that all important game on Sunday afternoon over in South Africa between the US and Brazil.

I won’t go into any big detail about the Brazil/US game and I am honestly undecided on whether or not to even do a preview of that game. I may just leave that to those who’ve been doing a good job of it lately. But we will see.

This weekend has some decent games on the menu in MLS even if it is a smaller portion than what we are use to here. Only four league games to mention, two on each day.

Feel free to leave your score predictions below.

Saturday:

New York Red Bulls – at – Columbus Crew:

The Crew looked good last week in Dallas until about the 73rd minute. From then on they look nothing like what we’ve seen from them this season. I’m honestly going to take that as a bit of a fluke as they host New York tomorrow. The Red Bulls were totally handled in the mid-week up in Toronto. They looked just flat out terrible against TFC. It looks like they will probably be without a few key offensive players for this one in Columbus and given their road record I doubt things will change too much. Guillermo Barros Schelotto should have a lot more space to run around and create things in this one and I look for the Crew to just control this game from the start.

WVH Prediction: Columbus 2, New York 1

————————————————————-

Toronto FC – at – Real Salt Lake:

This game really has a lot of interest in it. Both clubs are starting to play pretty well, and TFC looks to have hit a good stride here. Thing is on the road they aren’t quite the same with only a few wins in their club history away from BMO Field. RSL will be missing a couple key guys like Will Johnson and Jamison Olave. I do think this one could go either way with the way Dwayne De Rosario and Amado Guevara have been playing for TFC. RSL will have to control the midfield play if they want to win this one so they will need a big time performance out of Clint Mathis and Javier Morales. I’m gonna give RSL the benefit of playing at home for this one as I do think they are starting to come around here.

WVH Prediction: RSL 2, TFC 1

————————————————

Sunday:

Colorado Rapids – at – Seattle Sounders FC:

Seattle needs a big time performance in this one by their defense if they want to win. Lately they’ve been giving up a lot of easy goals. Thankfully for the Emerald City bunch they have been bailed out by the play of Columbian Fredy Montero in recent weeks. I think Montero will have to get touches early against the Rapids defense that can let in their share of easy goals. Colorado on the other hand will again have to turn to Omar Cummings who has been great as of late. This one sounds like a draw with the way Seattle has played recently but I’m calling an upset as I really want to see Colorado come up here and move up the charts like I think they are going to. Cummings has been a handful for everyone lately and he could be the difference.

WVH Prediction: Colorado 2, Seattle 1

——————————————————–

Houston Dynamo – at – LA Galaxy:

LA hasn’t looked nearly the same over the last couple weeks after they drew so many games in a row there. We are seeing exactly what they are made of and it still isn’t anything special. Houston on the other hand has been playing very strong as of late though they will be missing a couple guys to international callups for the Gold Cup. I think LA needs a lot more than just guys like Gregg Berhalter and Dema Kovalenko returning to the lineup to beat Houston. I look for Stuart Holden and company to continue their unbeaten run here with a win.

WVH Prediction: Houston 2, LA 0
