Things are moving a little slow today. I spent some of the morning squaring away things for this year as far as getting a media credential here in Dallas goes, but I also have some work elsewhere as far as those things go.

I thought I would add some things to the offseason player movement page and make it a formal post like I do here and there.

I’ve added all the unsigned draft picks, that was the main change I made to this verison of the board. Some moves out there that are being reported are here and some are not. I still like to get official word from the clubs before I put the players as outgoing or incoming.

As always if you see something wrong or out of place just let me know and I will get it fixed as soon as possible.

The New England Revolution signed UMass keeper Zach Simmons to a contract today.

Simmons was viewed as one of the better keepers in the draft but with the lack of a need for keepers this year he went unselected. More than likely had there been a Supplemental Draft he would have easily been picked up there.

The Revs signed Simmons, 23, to a developmental contract and elevated back-up goalkeeper Brad Knighton to a senior roster spot. New England also announced that it had moved defender Chris Tierney from the developmental roster to its senior roster.

I like this move because I’ve seen Simmons a couple times and know he is a legit keeper. I was a little shocked not to see him taken earlier this month in the SuperDraft but again not many clubs needed a keeper. He will more than likely be the future keeper of this club once Matt Reis hangs up his boots.

Teams drafted yesterday as we all know. Some did much better than others. While we expect to see some draft picks traded away and clubs move above the other in order to snap the guy they wanted most early in the draft, it ended up not being the case.

Both Toronto and Seattle dangled their picks but at the end of the day, both walked away with top picks and looked really smart for it in the long run.

Really only one club moved up in the draft and that wasn’t even until the second round when Chicago did it. And honestly it may turn out to be the smartest move of the draft when it is all said and done.

How do I think each team faired? Here are my grades below. I tried to be reasonable for each club because let’s be real honest here, no one, not me nor any other soccer pundit out there knows if these guys are really going to be good in a year’s time or even three year’s time. Its all guess work.

Feel free as always to pipe in your grades below. People yesterday during the draft chat felt Toronto scored big, I am one to agree with them.

Chicago Fire: 4 picks, Baggio Husidic (20th overall); David Sias (43rd overall); Jokull Elisabetarson (52nd overall); and Richard Jata (58th overall)

For a club that had a lot of late picks I have to admit the Fire did pretty well for themseleves. They were the only club to trade up to get anyone and I thought getting Husidic was a nice kid to get. His combine scores put him in the second round but I think the kid has true potential to do some good things in the league. Jata is a hell of a story, if he keeps his head on straight he will be a real steal for this club. Sias is a good value at where they got them. I would have liked to have seen them go a little more defensive with their picks but overall they came out looking very solid.

WVH Draft Grade: B-

————————————————————————————————-

Chivas USA: 3 picks; Michael Lahoud (9th overall); Kyle Christensen (35th overall); and Jamie Franks (49th overall).

Getting Lahoud was a surprise at first to some (including myself) but the more you look into the better it is for Chivas. They need a replacement for the very possible departure of Sasha Kljestan and Lahoud looks like a MLS ready guy as it is. Franks is a risky pick because he may not sign with the league, if he does Preki and company may have gotten a real solid steal late with him.

But not picking Stefan Frei could come back to haunt them later on. Overall they didn’t address all the needs in the draft that they should have. Defensively they needed fresh faces and got none.

WVH Draft Grade: C-

————————————————————————————————-

Colorado Rapids: 6 picks, Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe (28th overall); Steward Ceus (37th overall); Ross Schunk (47th overall); Jordan Seabrook (51st overall); Henry Kalungi (53rd overall); and Michael Holody (59th overall).

Addressed some areas possible needs with four forth round picks. Their only early pick was Adjeman-Pamboe, which is a solid pick because he should add some much needed speed to their striking core. Getting the fallen Seabrook that late was a real steal in my mind and in a lot of others.

Getting Matt Pickens in a trade from Chicago could prove to be huge for the club. Addressing their keeper issues was much needed in this draft and Pickens is a good option to have.

WVH Draft Grade: B-

————————————————————————————————-

Columbus Crew: 3 picks: Paul Gerstenberger (30th overall); Alex Grendi (45th overall); Chris Clements (60th overall):

Columbus got the typical MLS Cup winners draft. Nothing exciting. I have to admit though I like the final pick with Clements. I was pretty high on him going into the draft and I think he could turn into a solid defender in the league. But overall the Crew didn’t need to do much in the draft this year, look for them to make better and bigger moves elsewhere.

WVH Draft Grade: D+

————————————————————————————————-

DC United: 5 picks: Rodney Wallace (6th overall); Chris Pontius (7th overall); Milos Kocic (21st overall); Lyle Adams (26th overall); and Brandon Barklage (36th overall).

Not a bad draft for United. Some hated the Pontius pick, mainly because I think most Black-and-Red fans thought Stefan Frei would be a wiser pick. I agree with that but Pontius will be a quality player down the line. Wallace is a beast of a defender and I thought getting him a six was a huge pick up. Kocic was seen to be the second best keeper in the draft so by not getting Frei they did get the next best thing. Adams was a huge steal that brought their grade way up for me. It went from being a decent draft to a very good one with Adams for me.

WVH Draft Grade: A

————————————————————————————————-

FC Dallas: 3 picks: Peri Marosevic (5th overall); George John(14th overall); and Brian Shriver (27th overall).

Probably one of the more underrated drafts I think. Three very good picks by Dallas. Their trades leading up to the draft made them draft this way. Marosevic will be an excellent striker down the road I believe. John is a quality defender and I really enjoyed Shriver during the College Cup run by UNC. All good picks that met some needs for Dallas. Some won’t rate it too high and maybe the reason for that is drafting two forwards and not two defenders.

WVH Draft Grade: B+

————————————————————————————————-

Houston Dynamo: 2 picks: Daniel Cruz (41st overall); and Marcus Tracey (56th overall).

Both gambles, but Cruz should turn out to be a good player under Dominic Kinnear. The Tracey pick was purely drafting player rights because Houston probably thinks like most in the league that Tracey will return in a couple years. Still both are long-shots but when you have only a few needs and only two late picks it isn’t a bad idea.

Its a wait and see kind of draft for the Dynamo. Right now its just not that great.

WVH Draft Grade: D+

————————————————————————————————-

Kansas City Wizards: 5 picks: Matt Besler (8th overall); Doug DeMartin (22nd overall); Graham Zusi (23rd overall); Neal Kitson (42nd overall); and Akeem Priestley (50th overall).

First two picks seemed like a reach at the time but could be good. I like the Zusi pick because I think he could easily be a solid part of this club for the next few years. Kitson will easily be a good backup and possible waiting in the wings keeper behind Kevin Hartman. Still overall not a great draft by the Wizards.

WVH Draft Grade: C-

————————————————————————————————-

LA Galaxy: 4 picks: Omar Gonzalez (3rd overall); AJ DeLaGarza (19th overall); Josh Boateng (33rd overall); and Kyle Patterson (48th overall).

Love the draft by Bruce Arena. Gonzalez is probably the best defender in the draft and DeLaGarza was a good pick in the second round to trade and get. Patterson was also a good pick late in the draft.

Plus unloading Ante Jazic was a good move by Arena to clear some much needed cap space.

WVH Draft Grade: A

————————————————————————————————-

New England Revolution: 7 picks: Kevin Alston (10th overall); Ryan Maxwell (15th overall); Andrei Gotsmanov (24th overall); Denaldin Hamzagic (25th overall); Chris Salvaggione (38th overall); Darrius Barnes (40th overall); Tyrel Lacey (55th overall).

Loved their first two picks. Getting Alston was huge for the Revs and Maxwell will provide some serious speed to the wings. Barnes will end up being a steal in this draft as well. Seeing how their previous picks have turned out, their reaches with Hamzagic and Salvaggione could end up being good.

Overall it was a solid and probably a successful draft for Steve Nicol and company.

WVH Draft Grade: B

————————————————————————————————-

New York Red Bulls: 4 picks: Jeremy Hall (11th overall); Babajide Ogunbiyi (18th overall); Jack Traynor (29th overall); Nick Zimmerman (44th overall).

First two picks were great. Hall will provide a solid spark on the wings and Ogunbiyi is a good addition to a weak defense. Traynor and Zimmerman are a bit of a reach in my mind from what I’ve seen and read about them. More than likely both will be turned into defensive backs. We will see about those two but overall not a bad draft for the Red Bulls. I do still wonder about Juan Carlos Osorio’s drafting skills.

WVH Draft Grade: B

————————————————————————————————-

Real Salt Lake: 3 pick: Jean Alexandre (11th overall); Raphael Cox(54th overall); and Futhi Bhembe (57th overall).

Probably the worst draft by any club this year. Alexandre is good but definitely a big reach at 11. Thing is Alexandre is a decent prospect but he was probably good to pick in the second or even third round. Two late picks are anybody’s guesses here. I still think they should have taken Frei and traded him elsewhere for better value.

WVH Draft Grade: F

————————————————————————————————-

San Jose Earthquakes: 2 picks: Brad Ring (17th overall); and Quincy Amarikwa (32nd overall).

Ring was a very good pick in the second round. He easily could have been a first rounder. Amarikwa is an interesting prospect. He could end up being good but he also could end up being pretty bad. Still with only two picks they did alright. John Doyle has more work to do elsewhere in transfers and signings.

WVH Draft Grade: C+

————————————————————————————————-

Seattle Sounders FC: 4 picks: Steve Zakuani (1st overall); Evan Brown (16th overall); Jared Karkas (31st overall); and Michael Fucito (46th overall).

Zakuani will be a good prospect for years to come or he could suck for all we know. I still believe he will turn out to be pretty good. Brown is also a very solid pick, he was probably one of the more underrated players from Wake Forest.

Still not a bad draft for the expansion side, two defenders, a midfielder and a striker. Pretty much what you should do with four picks if you are an expansion club.

WVH Draft Grade: B

————————————————————————————————-

Toronto FC: 5 picks: Sam Cronin (2nd overall); O’Brien White (4th overall); Stefan Frei (13th overall); Mike Grella (34th overall); and Kyle Hall (39th overall).

What can we say, the Reds had the best draft of anyone this year. They didn’t deal their picks like we all thought they would, probably because knowing Mo Johnston he was asking for too much. Cronin is MLS ready, as is Frei. White will be a good pick once he is fully healthy. If Grella signs it will easily be the strongest draft any club has probably ever had.

At the end of the day the Reds end up with the best midfielder (Cronin), the best keeper (Frei) and to some even the best forward (White). One could say they made out like bandits in this draft. I think they very well did.

WVH Draft Grade: A+

Also, Bouna time in Colorado is done. That’s the news of the afternoon that was mixed in the draft. Colorado Rapids have parted ways with goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul, but have found a replacement in none other than former Chicago Fire goalkeeper Matt Pickens.

The Fire traded Colorado the rights to Pickens in the trade that saw them swap second-round picks and acquire Baggio Husidic. The Fire also got some allocation in the trade. I mentioned the trade during the live draft chat here at WVH, but didn’t have the full details at the time.

Pickens, who spent part of the 2007/08 season with Queens Park Rangers, has signed with MLS and is expected to be the Rapids new starter this year.

I like this deal for both sides. The Fire moved up in the draft while the Rapids get a keeper they can rely on for the coming years.

What do you all make of this deal for both sides?

Real Salt Lake has trade Dema Kovalenko to the Galaxy for draft pick and some allocation money. The Galaxy also acquired forward Mike Magee from New York earlier in the day for a draft pick.

The Red Bulls picked up a second-round pick in the deal in today’s draft. No word yet what kind of pick RSL got out of this deal.

The Galaxy traded the rights to ‘retired’ defender Ty Harden to the Colorado Rapids for a third-round pick. LA acquired the 35th overall pick in the draft for Harden’s rights.

I have to give it to Bruce Arena, sure the names aren’t flashy as some would possible like but he is addressing needs the club probably couldn’t address in today’s draft.

Time for the final mock draft before tomorrow afternoon’s 2009 MLS SuperDraft. I had meant to do more mock drafts but really I didn’t see enough reason to do it with the reports that came out of the MLS Combine. Some movement happened in my mind after reading about a few players but others seemed to stay the same for me.

A lot of this could change with trades that will happen tomorrow but until then I think this is good enough for now.

1. Seattle Sounders FC: Steve Zakuani (Akron)

He may not be too high on Sigi Schmid’s list right now but if no one makes a good enough deal with the Sounders I see them still taking Zakuani. He has the most upside of any striker on the board.

2. Toronto FC: Sam Cronin (Wake Forest)

Toronto still wants to deal this pick. But if they for some reason wait to deal after the selection I think they will take the next highest wanted player, Cronin. A few teams will be in line to trade for him I think.

3. Los Angeles Galaxy: Omar Gonzalez (Maryland)

Getting a defender is probably priority number one for the Galaxy. I think Gonzalez will drop here and the Galaxy will be hard pressed not to take him.

4. Toronto FC: Stefan Frei (California)

If they keep this pick and Frei is on the board I think Toronto will go for this selection. Sure they have other needs right now but with an aging Greg Sutton and Brad Edwards not being quite ready to be a starter yet, Frei has the most upside (and potential value) of anyone left for Mo Johnston to get.

5. FC Dallas: Rodney Wallace (Maryland)

I doubt Dallas will be picking here tomorrow but if they do Wallace should be the guy they end up with. They have issues on the left back position of their roster and Wallace would probably be the best bet to slide into that role before the end of the season.

6. DC United: Kevin Alston (Indiana)

Alston moves up to the six spot from the last mock draft. I see DC getting him either way in this draft. He didn’t make a big enough splash to move up to five or better but didn’t hurt himself to drop below this point. Plus he fits a need for DC in this draft.

7. DC United: Jeremy Hall (Maryland)

I’ve bounced around a bit with Hall but he seems like a quality fit for DC. He didn’t have a great draft but he still has enough upside for the future to go for here.

8. Kansas City Wizards: Peri Marosevic (Michigan)

Marosevic apparently had a great Combine. Kansas City needs attacking options right now and he would be a great fit for this club.

9. Chivas USA: Chris Pontius (UCSB)

If no deal happens for Chivas to move up and get Frei look for them to probably try and take an offensive selection. Pontius had a pretty good Combine and I think he will be moving up into this spot of the draft. I can’t see Chivas passing on him if he is here too.

10. New England Revolution: Michael Lahoud (Wake Forest)

Another guy to move into the first round here. Even though the Revs need a central defender I just don’t see them trading up to get one here. Lahoud will be the best value available here if he is still on the board.

11. New York Red Bulls: Babajide Ogunbiyi (Santa Clara)

A lot of hype from the Combine over Ogunbiyi. Apparently he did enough to move up and into the first round. New York needs defenders in a bad way so this pick seems likely.

12. Real Salt Lake: Daniel Cruz (UNLV)

Cruz will be more of a project pick for whomever takes him I believe. RSL doesn’t need a winger but they are good at keeping guys on a roster for a couple years to develop (see Chris Seitz). Cruz will sit and wait his time unless he shows up and blows away Jason Kries in pre-season camp.

13. Toronto FC: O’Brain White (UConn)

A pick that everyone is calling for. It will happen.

14. FC Dallas: Calum Angus (Saint Louis)

I still like Dallas taking Angus here in the first round (should they keep this pick). Defense has to be a top priority for the Hoops and I still think Angus has enough upside to be worth picking here.

15. New England Revolution: Matt Besler (Notre Dame)

Maybe not the best option to quickly fix the central part of the defense now that Michael Parkhurst is gone to Europe but Besler is a decent enough player that could (over time) turn into a quality starter in the back. They could also take Wake defender Lyle Adams here too.

What more could you expect going into a draft. Loads and loads of trade discussion. The news keeps flying in today about potential deals that could take place over the next 48 hours or so. I figured they need to be looked at a bit closer to see what will and what won’t happen in the coming hours.

Of course some of these are rumors so take it for what they are, but others seem more legit as some reports are surfacing about them continue to come out.

Another note: I’ll have my final mock draft coming up here in a little bit.

Trade Talk #1: Seattle dealing top pick

Honestly I think something will happen with this top pick. A couple weeks ago I was dead set on seeing Seattle make the first selection in the draft but the more I read into what people are saying about Sigi Schmid and his new crew, the more I believe they will look to deal this top pick since they aren’t too sold on a few of the top prospects in the draft yet.

Where they will trade to is still the question. Biggest suitors for that top pick right now are Toronto, DC, Dallas, and LA.

Right now my bet is Dallas goes for it on a last second deal. They will send their number 5 pick for the top pick along with Dax McCarty (a guy they are heavily shopping this winter).

DC could still make a play for the deal but I still have a feeling they stay at number 6 and 7.

Trade Talk #2: Toronto Dealing Picks

Now that Seattle is in the discussions with people the talk with Toronto has hushed a little bit. Not surprising too as I’ve felt the Reds were hold on too long to deal on of their picks. A deal could still get done tomorrow and if they do it will be with either Chivas USA or DC United. Apparently Chivas really wants keeper Stefan Frei, who is seen as the next Brad Guzan. To do so some say they will be willing to trade defender Jonathan Bornstein to whom ever they are trading with to move up (the AmeriGoats only have a couple early picks).

Desperate times call for desperate deals and Chivas could do just that if they really want Frei. I think this is a move that could ver well happen. Chivas sends Bornstein and probably a draft pick or allocation to Toronto for the second overall pick.

DC still could make a good offer but I just don’t count on it at this point.

Trade Talk #3: Christian Gomez

Oh the talk on Gomez is really heating up today. Some are saying he will go here and others say something completely different. SBI says New England, Steve Goff says Dallas. Both will probably dangle late first round picks at Colorado for Gomez is either report is true. I believe there is still a mystery team that is out there in the running for Gomez that hasn’t been mention that will end up with him (Houston maybe? Kansas City?).

Either way, if Gomez goes somewhere look for Colorado to be picking up some of his salary in 2009.

Trade Talk #4: Mike Magee to LA

This one is pretty much done and waiting on league approval from what I hear. Word has it the Red Bulls will get a conditional second-rounder in probably the 2010 draft.

Trade Talk #5: Wilman Conde

Part of me still thinks the Fire could be dealing Conde this week if they can find the right club and deal. They know they won’t have him for 2009 so making a play now seems to make the most sense. But the thing is, no one is stepping up right now to go for Conde. Should Toronto want to deal with Chicago (and we know how that has worked out in the past), they could still make a deal here. Time is ticking away though for it to happen.

Trade Talk #6: Ante Jazic on the move

The only likely destination for Jazic still seems to be Toronto. Thing is I wonder what LA would get in return here. Just like the Conde thing, the talk with Jazic has cooled off a bit recently. Ives seems to think he will end up in a Chivas uniform is they trade Bornstein.

Trade Talk #7: RSL on the move up

Word out of Salt Lake, the club still wants to move up the draft boards to get midfielder Sam Cronin. They are willing to dangle some defenders to get to done too. I don’t see them going all the way to the top of the charts unless they work out a monster deal with Seattle (not likely). Still they could move to number 4 from Toronto and have a shot at landing Cronin if other deals work out.

That’s it for now…remember there will be a live draft chat tomorrow afternoon starting around 12:30 CT.

I did a draft tracker last year and I think a live chat with updates throughout will work out a little bit better than last year. Its easier on my end at least and probably on your’s too.

I will have more info on that chat coming up here soon. Expect it to kick off maybe a half hour before the draft. Somewhere around then, that’s the time frame I am looking at here.
