Prime-Time MLS Preview

All eyes on the MLS are going to be fixated on the Meadowlands tonight as Red Bull New York plays host to the Chicago Fire. Another ESPN2 Thursday night prime-time soccer match.

A lot of talk surrounding the two clubs about who is up and who is down. Chicago comes into the game as losers of three straight, while the Red Bulls are fresh off their 4-0 thrashing of the Columbus Crew. Chicago has given up eight goals in their last three games while only scoring three of their own. A big change in the start of the season where they were one of the toasts of the league with New York. Now they are merely looking like pretenders while the Red Bulls are contenders all the way.

Chicago could be in luck tonight with many injuries hurting the Red Bulls. Don’t expect to see Captain America, Claudio Reyna in action tonight. He has been hit with a groin strain for the last couple weeks. Also you won’t see Hunter Freeman in defense and possibly you won’t see keeper Ronald Waterreus. The Fire also have been hit by the injury bug, I would say Chris Rolfe will come off the bench if he ends up playing, which means the Fire will have to look else where to players like Calen Carr goes goals.

In my eyes, the Fire continue their slide here tonight in New York. Even with some of the injuries to the Red Bulls I still think they have way to much talent for the Fire to keep up with, especially with all the offensive trouble that the Fire are currently having. Defensively as well, I cannot see the Fire containing players Juan Pablo Angel or Dane Richards.

I like the Red Bulls in this one, should be a fairly exciting contest. The biggest question and concern for me tonight is the attendance. I know the Red Bulls have been trying to give away tickets for this one but will it work? I hope to God to see more than 10k there tonight. I won’t hold my breath though, which is sad considering how well this team is playing.

Games On The Menu Tonight

I am not usually one for predicting US Open Cup games or friendlies between clubs during the season. I won’t give predictions because they will be basically meaningless but the games are at least worth a mention.

My only concern with the two friendlies are the level of play that the foreign club will bring. Remember those clubs over there are now out of season. So it makes you wonder what amount of talent that they will bring over and what level will they try and play at. Its a worry, not a big worry but hopefully they will be entertaining contests.

US Open Cup – MLS qualifier match tonight:
Colorado v Salt Lake – I am already tired of seeing these two clubs square off. I really am against how clubs “qualify” for the US Open Cup, that is another article for another day. RSL needs this game more than the Rapids do.
But there are two friendlies that are very worth talking about tonight:

LA Galaxy host Rangers FC. - One of the many big names that the Galaxy will face this season, this one however is pre-Beckham. I think they will fare alright. The Galaxy need games to continue to gel as a squad so this should help. Plus any positives they can take from this game, especially a win would do wonders for them at this point I believe.
Toronto FC host Benfica – One of two big named clubs (Aston Villa being the other) coming over the pond to Canada to face the Reds this summer. TFC has players who know the Euro style of play so it should be a good contest. This is one of the friendlies this year that I was really excited by when I heard it announced. I would love to see more Portuguese clubs come over for friendlies.

If anyone will be attending those games and would like to report on it just let me know and I will gladly post your game report of these friendlies tonight.

Break Down Of TFC – RSL Trade

I have to say yesterday was one of the more interesting days for me and this blog. It all started with emails that there was some trade talk and rumors that were fun to talk about. I figured it would be left at that, just rumors and talk. But hours later more emails and posts on other blogs let me know that it was more than rumors, that it was all coming together in a trade.

Originally the rumor was a three way type of deal that would allow the LA Galaxy to land Jeff Cunningham from RSL and RSL to land Eskandarian from TFC. The Reds would then probably get some draft picks and allocation from the two sides.

However, that all changed as LA was never apart of the equation and it was all just between Toronto and Salt Lake.

Toronto is becoming smarter with their deals. A couple months ago I was hard on them for trading away picks in next year’s draft but now thanks to this deal and a couple others that they have made in the course of this season, they will have four first round picks next season. Yes, four. Trades with Houston, DC and Chivas are the reason behind the four picks now.

Either Toronto is hold those picks for bait (which is very likely) or they are going to go in a youthful direction next year to go along with what youth they already have.

As for my take on this trade. Its one that Mo Johnston has been wanting. He has had his eye on Cunningham ever since he became the head coach of TFC. In his words, to get a player like a Cunningham you have to give up talent and Esky was that talent. I know it will be disappointing for Alecko to leave a place where he was settling in and getting very comfortable but he will do fine in Salt Lake. He brings a nice knowledge of what it takes to win a title (something that not many in RSL land know about).

Toronto gets a very exciting player in Cunningham. Pairing him with Dichio sure sounds great but I wonder how long it will take for their styles to come together in a positive manner. I think for Cunningham a chance is welcome at this point. After the first couple games this season, he has dropped off the stat sheets and you had to believe something was up when he didn’t play a full 90 last weekend in Dallas.

Down the road we will really know if this was a good deal for either team. At the time, on paper, I can’t honestly say one team got the better end of the deal.

Eskandarian Sent Packing To RSL

As mentioned earlier, there was rumors of some trades in RSL land, one of which we now know as true.

Goff at the WP is reporting now that it is confirmed that Alecko Eskandarian has been traded to RSL from Toronto FC.

Esky told Goff this over the phone:

“It’s a huge shock. Totally out of the blue. They called me into the coaches’ office this morning and told me. I am definitely disappointed. I felt good here and was really settling in. It hurts. I feel like I was deceived. I am sure they will put a spin on it and say that I wanted to leave, but that’s not the case.”

Tough break for Esky too. He is reunited with Freddy Adu as well, so maybe some old United magic is left in the tank for the two? One can only hope if you are a fan of RSL or a fan of Esky.
More on this to come. No detail on the full disclosure of the trade. I am assuming that he has been traded for allocation and picks of some sort, probably not for another player.

I kind of assume it was always in Toronto’s mind to trade Esky. He was mostly in talks with New York at the beginning of the year. I see them now going off and trying to make a bid at landing Canadian International Tomasz Radzinski.

Update: Looks as though I was wrong about what Esky was traded for…the league’s site now reports that Cunningham has been dealt in exchange for Esky. So Esky to RSL and Jeff Cunningham to Toronto. Wow…what a day.

RSL Now Looking To Deal

So its been a couple weeks since any real trades and deals here in the league but fresh out of Salt Lake City is a talk or discussion about how Jason Kreis is hoping to make a couple deals. I guess he is using the Mo Johnston logic that if it is broke, then fix it and fix it some more until you get your first win.

Goff at the Washington Post and the lads at MLS Underground have reported on various talks about some intriguing trades.

The possible deals right now are:

  • Jeff Cunningham to Los Angeles for Nate Jaqua and an unknown player.
  • Alecko Eskandarian from Toronto to Salt Lake City.

Now, I have been saying for weeks how badly the Galaxy need a proven striker to go along side Donovan and company. Cunningham would be just that. I like Jeff but I can’t say he has been working out this season for RSL. Sometimes when things are bad you just been to restart and oddly enough shipping Cunningham makes a lot of sense for Kreis. I am not saying landing Jaqua would solved their problems at RSL but it would be a fresh start for both sides.

Now the Alecko to RSL rumor is an interesting one. I like Alecko in Toronto and I believe he likes where he is at right now up north. It would make sense for RSL but not for Toronto to deal Alecko. In a way I really hope this rumor is just that and not something that is actually going to happen.

Kreis wants at least three impact players…so any other ides who he could go for? Your thoughts are always welcome.

I will be back with more details on everything once they are passed along to me.

Galaxy To Play Yet Another Friendly

The LA Galaxy and the USL-1 Minnesota Thunder have announced that the Galaxy will be playing in a friendly on October 10 in the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The opponent has yet to be announced for the Galaxy. It will apparently be a big name club.

The Galaxy have basically whored themselves out this summer and fall with friendlies and I will say it again, they won’t succeed because of it. I am not saying the whole David Beckham thing won’t do wonders for the club and the league because it will, I am saying they won’t win the MLS Championship this fall as well as I really don’t see them making the playoffs.

I know they want to get the most bang for their buck with Becks coming over but they have almost shown me that they are placing a greater value on the all mighty dollar than on winning a championship.

The club is currently in a hole and almost in the cellar in the league. Thankfully for them teams like RSL exists and play in the same conference as they do.

I will say this though, on the bright side, the quality of clubs that the Galaxy will be facing this year outside of the MLS is amazing. Just look at what they have on the friendly side as well as the couple competitions they will be in:

05/23 – Wednesday: Rangers F.C.
07/17 – Tuesday: Tigres UANL – World Series of Football
07/21 – Saturday: Chelsea FC – World Series of Football
07/24 – Tuesday: Pachuca – SuperLiga
07/28 – Saturday: CD Guadalajara – SuperLiga
10/03 – Wednesday: @ Vancouver Whitecaps
10/10 – Wednesday: Club TBA – Minnesota

Busy friendly/competition schedule coming up for the Galaxy. Oh yeah, their toughest month is going to be September, they have eight league matches in that month. Though some could argue that August will be rough since they have six matches and five of them are on the road.

Lastly, the longer they stay in the US Open Cup, the more games they get. I just don’t know how much gas in the tank this club will have. They have to pick things up right away.

MLS Power Rankings

As mentioned before, a lot would be known about these clubs by the end of this past weekend and that was mostly true. We know who the real contenders are and who is just pretending. More of the story will be written this week but a good chunk was taken down in week seven.

Some changes on the board, teams moving up and down. But a little more consistency across the league now. Parity still exists to a degree but not as much as we initially believed at the start of the 2007 campaign.

Ranking (last week Ranking) Team (points) -

1. (1) New England Revolution (17 pts.) – A good team finds ways to win, but a great team can find ways to win even when they are not playing well. That was the case in Houston this past weekend. The direction of this team is going in a very positive manner since their season opening loss at Chicago. KC will come into town this weekend, I expect another three points. The Revs have the offense and the defense to shut anyone out.

2. (2) Red Bull New York (14 pt.) - We do now know how much of a contender this Red Bull team will be. I want to see more against the brass of the league like New England and even against a team like DC before putting the title expectations on this club. They have the talent, make no mistake about it, I just want to see it against the league’s best before I jump on any bandwagon. Most in the media are already on there but I just don’t know yet. I think they will have their way with a Chicago squad this week on Thursday night. Apparently they are giving away loads of free tickets. Sure sounds sad if you are asking me. I hope we see 10k there.

3. (5) FC Dallas (16 pt.) - Two wins this past week, keeping hopes if retaining another Brimestone Cup in the process. I really have enjoyed seeing this team evolve in recent weeks. Steve Morrow has to feel confident in his side and they are playing with confidence now as well. The midfield play has picked up and looks good. The defense is still a bit shaky but they are winning. They get a trip to LA this weekend to play Chivas. Should be an interesting contest.

4. (3) Colorado Rapids (12 pts.) - The verdict is still a bit out on this club. I think they will be contenders in the west still but they need players like Herculez Gomez and Roberto Brown producing. We haven’t seen much of that recently. They will entertain the Galaxy this weekend. We all know how great the Galaxy are on the road, double with the fact that the DSG Park is the biggest field in the league. I think the Rapids will at least get a point if not three.

5. (6) Kansas City Wizards (13 pts.) - Still not sold on this team like some people are out there. They need Carlos Marinelli back and at full strength to really do some damage. Plus, where is the goal scorer Eddie Johnson at? The star has faded some and is continuing to do so. I still believe they are more of a pretender than anything else. BUT, if they handle themselves against New England at New England then I will be changing my mind. If not, expect this rating to fall back down again.

6. (4) Houston Dynamo (7 pt.) – No points this week even though they completely dominated their two games. Loads of missed chances will really haunt you. DeRo and Ching have been too distant this season from the stat columns. Things will bounce back though. They still do have one of the best defenses in the league and it will be put to the test this weekend in DC. A win there will help, a draw and it may help (only if they score) but a loss will deflate the team all together I feel.

7. (10) DC United (7 pts.) - Finding a way to win in the toughest environment that the league has to offer is good. It was what this club needed. Tough game with Houston this week. Getting a result instantly puts them in the contender role once again. If not, the cries of the Supporter’s Shield Jinx will reign supreme.

8. (7) Chicago Fire (10 pts.) - Things are not looking good in Chicago. And all it took was a couple games. Last three games they have given up eight goals and only scored three of their own. That doesn’t win you games and that doesn’t help a coach who is on the hottest of hot seats right now. Blanco will help in a couple months but until then things are ugly. They need a result this week against New York, if not they will have to wait until Sunday against Real Salt Lake and even that game won’t be easy.

9. (9) LA Galaxy (5 pt.) - Can’t buy a result right now. The timing just isn’t down and the countdown is getting closer by the second to Beckham coming here. The Galaxy need to get in gear soon because you don’t want Beckham rethinking this decision to come and play for them. The road isn’t too kind to them as well and Colorado is a tough place to get a result. I don’t know if they have enough talent around Landon Donovan to get anything more than a draw at this point. Frank Yallop’s seat is probably pretty warm right now too.

10. (12) CD Chivas USA (8 pts.) - Okay, okay, got the draw against LA, which is a good thing. The identity of this team is getting back to where it should be as well. A result against Dallas this week at home will do wonders for their confidence and their status in the west. Anything less than a draw will hurt. Remember that three of Dallas’s five wins so far have come from on the road, so they have no fear.

11. (8) Columbus Crew (7 pt.) - Still can’t find the back of the net. At this rate they will do worse in the goals scored department than they did last season. They do get a visit from a pesky Toronto team. It may not be a good result but getting three points is a major step for this club. If not, then expect Sigi’s seat to be a bit warm come this time next week. So say it already is.

12. (11) Toronto FC (6 pt.) - Nice home stand against three solid clubs. Didn’t play particularly well against Houston but got the three points. Got unlucky against DC by giving up the late PK. They are pesky though I will repeat that about this club. I want to see how they fair on the road for once. BMO Field is nice and cozy for them but away from Canada they need to find their footing. A win would mean a lot for this young club.

13. (13) Real Salt Lake (4 pt.) - Think Jason Kreis is rethinking this whole coaching thing? No, he is doing fine, and you can already see a change in how this team thinks and plays. I feel they got a lucky PK call against Dallas but they just didn’t have the legs to get a point on the road this past Sunday. They have to go to Chicago this weekend and they could see their first win of the season there. Chicago is a club on the slide and it may be the perfect timing for this club to get their first win of the season.

Shevchenko and the MLS

Andriy Shevchenko possibly coming to the US to play in the MLS this summer? Seriously? No.

I hear and read this rumor and just cannot believe my eyes.  He does sound slightly serious but I really don’t know which way to take on it.

“Soccer is growing in the US and I would like to be a part of that,” he said. “I played there last summer against the Major League Soccer All-Stars and I saw that it is definitely improving.”

His wife is American (pictured below) so that could play in part of his desire to go over the pond and play in the young league. Remember folks, if the wife isn’t happy somewhere then either is her hubby. Simply put, if his wife wants to go home to the States then Shevchenko will join.

IF, and I do mean IF this were to even happen I would imagine a DC or possibly a New England to land him. His wife is from around DC so that would logically make sense but if you look around the league in markets where he would be comfortable and where she would be comfortable it would only make sense (in my mind really) in those two. Big enough cities with good enough teams. DC is a stretch unless they unload some players up top in order to sign him.

I feel New England is a better fit for him because the Revs would have less to unload and the thought of Shevchenko and Twellman playing up top has to make the league’s mouth water just a bit.

In all honesty I don’t see him coming over just yet…maybe in a couple years. But hey, if it happens, then great. I just hope he doesn’t land in New York or LA…or even Chicago. Sorry Galaxy, Fire and Red Bulls…you have your DPs…and New York has two. The league has to be able to balance it out.

Wouldn’t you want to keep her happy? I think so…your thoughts?

(Update) This Much We Do Know..

As many of you know I have been keeping a closer eye every team in the league this week and even into parts of next week. I said that we would know a whole lot more about who would be placed in certain categories like “team to beat” and so on. So far a lot of that is ringing true with the clubs in the league after this weekend. Some verdicts are still out because of games left to be played but for the most part signs are pointing in directions that we can actually see unlike before this season.

For more on what I felt see below in the article called: “Digging Through The Dirt“. I had a good amount of responses about it and most of you agreed with me on what was said about most of the teams.

Here is an update on where we stand…

New England: Didn’t exactly play the best 90 against Houston but somehow found themselves on the positive side afterwards with three points. I have to say that when you are a good club and play as poorly as the Revs did and still get a positive result then things may be real special this season. I think its safe to say they may be in the “team to beat” category now, a lot more will be told if they are able to get three points against KC in the next match. By the way, Matt Reis is easily the front runner for Keeper of the Year…breathtaking save last night on Richardo Clark.
Red Bull New York: I said they needed three points against the Crew and they got it. They dominated the Crew and got four goals. I think they are a true contender in the east and will rival New England for the rest of the season.

Houston Dynamo: Didn’t get a single point in their last two against Toronto or New England, yet outplayed both teams. I will say it again though, I don’t see them repeating as champions. Outplaying teams like the Dynamo have done and not getting anything from it will do one of two things to a team: either help motivate them (which will probably happen for the most part) or totally hurt them. I do think things will look for for Houston and the goals will come. But so far they have put themselves in a major hole because of their lack of offensive production.

FC Dallas: The verdict is still out on this team in my mind. Got three points on the road and they are quickly showing that they can play anywhere in the league and get a result. Now if they can get the same positive result at home today against RSL then you can start placing them in a contender role in the west.

Colorado Rapids: Got a draw with KC. Eh, not too bad. I still believe they will be able to salvage the home standing in the next game and get three points. Still a lot is out on this team though. A loss or another draw and you can think they will be more of a pretender than a contender this season.

Kansas City Wizards: Nice draw on the road, but I am still no believer in this team until they beat a quality side. They beat New England in the next game and then Wizard fans will have something to talk about. I see this team as a mere pretender more than anything, struggling to make the playoffs.

Chicago Fire: Straight up pretending now I think. Sure injuries are hurting them but its no excuse. I think a coaching change will take place this season in the Windy City. This team has no attacking creativity to compete in a very competitive east.

Columbus Crew: Blown out on the road, ouch. They get Toronto in town next weekend and I think they should be able to get a result against the Reds, but if they don’t my stand on them making the playoffs as the 8th and final team may change.

LA Galaxy: Yeah, I will know more in a week. I don’t think we have all seen enough of this team to really know anything at all at this point.

Chivas USA: Same goes for this team as their Toolbox counterparts. Though I think after tonight we will really know more about this team.

DC United: Good, got a result on the road and now things are really looking up. Expect this team to really start contending in the east. The slow start put them in a big hole but they still have the talent to do some damage in the east.

Real Salt Lake: Will definitely know more after today. They need a win badly though, if not they will easily be one of the bigger disappointments in my mind this season.

Toronto FC: Hey three points against the two teams in the league that really know a rough atmosphere like Toronto. Sure the DC loss will be tough to swallow but getting six points from three games in eight days is a real positive. Don’t see this team making the playoffs but in this league you just never know.

More will come after today’s games as well…stay tuned.

This Much We Do Know…

Like I said before the weekend began was that we would know an awful lot about these clubs once this weekend was over. So far I believe that is ringing true.

DC found a way to beat Toronto on a late PK goal by Jamie Moreno, who ties Jason Kreis on the all-time goal list. Which, by the way, most won’t believe this but a good chunk of Moreno’s goals have come from the PK spot. Interesting bit of info for you. We saw a lot from DC, they are looking like a contender again in the east even though they still have a load of ground to make up with New England and New York at the top. Toronto, like I said would be lucky to get anything out of this week and three points is a good showing considering the amount they have played in the last eight days. Three games in eight days is tough on any team, good or bad.

New York is a contender. They proved it today with their thrashing of a very good Columbus defense. Four goals was exciting if you are a Red Bulls fan but judging by the attendance, many still don’t realize it. I know the weather, who cares, I guess maybe I am getting spoiled seeing all of these Toronto games where people actually show up well in bad weather.

Hey, hey, Clint Mathis scored again today. I hate to say I told you so. He is an “every-other game kind of guy”. I can’t say I am expecting anything less than a yellow card next Thursday against Chicago.

Columbus on the other hand looked in a world of hurt. Bad defense and unlucky play. They will still struggle to make the playoffs but I still feel they will sneak in.

Games in progress…

Colorado is up on Kansas City at the half…big surprise in my eyes.

New England is up on the Dynamo. I will say it again about the Dynamo, they lose this game and they will not repeat as MLS Champs in 2007. Eventually all of these missed chances by the Dynamo will work out but so far it is killing them.

More to come later on…probably in the morning…
