Sunday Thoughts and Weekend Recap

Columbus and Chicago are still in action as I am writing this but I am pretty sure that game won’t matter a whole lot.

I didn’t see any of Houston and Dallas due to the league letting Telefutra broadcast games and not put them online. I don’t mind the fact that they let them broadcast games but only certain markets have that channel. I don’t and so I complain.

Houston wins in the second half. From what things look like Houston finally outplayed and beat a team. Dallas was the perfect team for them to get a win against too. Would it have been different if DeRo  had been in the lineup? You bet your sweet face it would be. I actually agree to some people’s thoughts that Houston would play worse with him in the lineup today against Dallas.

————————————————————————————-

Okay, I watched some more of the New York and KC game. Got some random thoughts from it.

~~ Eddie Johnson, please keep your shirt on when you score. Please. I could care less that you score but I don’t want to see that you are a grown-ass man.

~~ Boy, do you think New York’s defensive woes thanks to injuries hurt them yesterday? Yes. Van Den  Burgh got totally burned on that third goal by Johnson.  I expect once they get healthy that it won’t be like that again.

—————————————————————————————–

Also got to finish the US – China game, thanks to my DVR this morning. Solid game by the lads against the boys from the Far East. Good tune up match for next weeks Gold Cup. Four goals were all quite nice.
—————————————————————————————–

Thoughts on Chicago – Columbus:

~~ Comcast broadcast is rather boring itself. The two guys in the booth aren’t horrible but they are a bit corny with one another. And the sideline reporter is practically worthless in my mind. I don’t know what it is with these networks that use a sideline reporter for soccer. The only thing they need to report are injuries and the times that coaches change formations and such. I don’t need to know about random reunions with players and stuff like that. It doesn’t add much to the game for me.

~~ I love Bridgeview but it may have the worst sight lines in the league.

~~ Fire fans, I know your great. I do. But please get a little more creative with your chants. I love your passion but screaming “Fire, fire, fire” over and over again makes me want to mute the volume on my computer.

~~ Is it me or is the reffing this weekend pathetic?

~~ Schelotto may be one of the most fun players in the league to watch right now. He may be a bit old at 34, but he sure doesn’t play like that. Once he gets used to some of his teammates things will work out for the Crew.

~~ Wow, the Crew really suck at corner kicks. I mean they really suck at them. Haven’t scored on one since October of 2005. Wow.

~~ As I write this the Fire get a goal thanks to Jeff Curtin on a corner kick. Nice back-post goal too.

~~ Okay, the Crew level things up thanks to a sweet free kick from  Schelotto to some guy that I have never heard of. Nice header nonetheless. Good to see each team getting on the board here.

More to come….add your own if you want….

Saturday Thoughts

Just sat through the Toronto – Colorado game. Kinda a dull game, but with the Rapids involved I wasn’t expecting anything less.

~~ I have to say that the Altitude broadcast is about as boring as the Rapids’ play. What gets me about the two guys in the booth (or the studio rather in this case) are good, don’t get me wrong they are good, but very dry and a bit boring at times to listen to. For another thing, why on earth were they in the studio for this game calling it? Shouldn’t you be at the stadium watching the game to call it? To me that is a total waste on their part because they couldn’t even call a solid game because of the fact that they weren’t in the stadium. Just my two cents on that.

~~ Jeff Cunninham is a very dangerous player and even though he didn’t score today he was at least going for it and trying. I think the trade is starting to work for him just as much as it is for TFC. He looks like a happier guy in Toronto.

~~ So the Rapids need to learn how to start games when they are on the road. Absolute sloppy play caused the goals.

~~ Bouna may be the best, if not, the luckiest keeper in the league right now. So many great reaction saves. His defense sure leaves him high and dry too many times. The Rapids were very lucky that it was 4-0 at the half but thanks to Bouna it was only a one game game. Bouna time baby…gotta thank your lucky stars if your a Rapids fan right now.
~~ Herculez Gomez is showing us that he is the man up top to lead the Rapids. I am happy for that because I think he is showing LA what a mistake it was to get rid of him.

~~ Nice crowd as usual in Toronto. Boy they are slow getting back for the second half though.

~~ Phantom red card to Kevin Goldthwaite in the late stages. The matchtracker says it was due to “Abusive Language”, I guess he talked about someone’s momma in a bad manner. If it is really bad then I am sure MLS will have to step in and suspend him for a game or two. For the time being we are left to speculate what was said. Bad part was the ref look very unsure of himself after the card. There was no interaction between Goldthwaite and any Rapid player so it makes the card even more questionable.

~~ Speaking of the ref, I have to say it was a bit of a poorly reffed game, just as many of the games have been this season. I believe it was the guy’s third game and it showed really. The league has to get it’s best refs out on the pitch and they didn’t do so today. Did the league lose some refs to the Gold Cup call ups or something too?

~~ So New England and RSL was a boring game…the Revs dominated play and somehow RSL walks away with a point. Still no wins for that club but oddly enough still only three losses for them as well. Hey Richtie Kotschau, welcome back to the league with a red card. Awesome.

~~ Yeah I will admit, I didn’t watch a lot of the Revs-RSL game…boring play, kind of boring announcing, even the crowd looked bored.

~~ Good action in the New York and KC game. Angel just made this game worst watching.

~~ Oh look Clint Mathis is being Clint Mathis another red card. Really, can anyone take him seriously on his rebirth as a legit player? I sure as hell can’t with actions like this.

~~ Wow, EJ is literally on fire. And so are the Wizards. They are definitely proving me wrong and oddly enough I don’t mind.

~~ So EJ with another, yes, another hat trick. He looks like a whole another player with Carlos Marinelli on the field. Then again so do the Wizards. I can’t say I will root for the Wizards but you can’t help but enjoy their play right now. Dominating the “league’s best” in New York. (okay I will admit, this game would be a bit different in New York though)

~~ It was good to see that Wizard fans actually cared for once to show. 13k isn’t too shabby but it isn’t great for this marquee of a game. I will keep my words about this though for another day. These two clubs have the worst marketing in the league.

~~ So KC is atop the east now. Wow. I am stunned. Here is to hoping Toronto continues their push towards the playoffs. I honestly don’t believe KC could be Toronto right now. Honestly.

More to come from the rest of today’s action….feel free to give me your thoughts on today’s games as well…

MLS Weekend Preview

No prime-time game this week has left us to wait until the weekend for a MLS fix. Can’t say I was overly upset with the lack of game during the midweek this week. I think some teams, well most of the team, needed a extra day or two.

Saturday looks like a lot of fun, while Sunday could be a yawner. Chivas gets the day off in the league but for some reason will travel to the great Northwest to play the USL-1′s Seattle Sounders with half of their team gone to National team duty. Real smart planning on someone’s part.

Saturday’s games:

Colorado Rapids at Toronto FC: As I have stated before this week, I think this is a big test for the Rapids. Sure the Reds aren’t the league’s best team but I do think a win up north will do wonders for a team like the Rapids. It will show people that they can win anywhere, even if it is ugly.

I do expect more ugly style of play from the Rapids but I don’t think the Toronto crowd will put up with much of it. This one will be a real battle. I really believe it will come down to who can score. Colorado finds the most boring ways to score sometimes by putting the other team to sleep for 70 or 80 minutes and then scoring on a usual cross from  Terry Cooke. Toronto on the other hand is the most scrappy team in the league.

I think a draw will be in order for this game. Its the only thing that makes real sense to me when I see these two teams matched up with one another. A win for the Reds and it will keep them in real contention in the east. A win for the Rapids will probably give them the western lead for the weekend.

WVH Prediction: Colorado 2, Toronto 2

Real Salt Lake at New England Revolution: Yeah, RSL has had success against the Revs in recent games at Foxboro, but I don’t see it this time around. Weird to think that RSL only has three losses this season. Yeah, five of the games were draws. This one won’t be a draw though.

I think the Revs will find ways to score and beat down a RSL team in the midfield. Remember, its not always the defenses fault, the midfield cannot posses the ball enough to give their defense a break. New England is too good in the midfield and it will show against a weak RSL midfield.

WVH Prediction: New England 2, RSL 0

Red Bull New York at Kansas City Wizards: Big game this weekend in the midwest. Both teams are hot. For me, I still want to see more out of the Wizards. I am sold on the Red Bulls but I want to be sold on the Wizards to claim them as a full contender.

Eddie Johnson has to have a good game. None of this score a hat trick one game and then hide for three straight games. That kind of thing just won’t cut it. New York is too good of a team defensively to put up with Johnson I think as well.

Juan Pablo Angel will find a way to score against the Wizards.

A draw works in the Red Bulls hands while it would do a whole lot for the Wizards unless it was a scoreless draw. I don’t see that happening. I am taking the Red Bulls to win on the road in a big time statement game.

WVH Prediction: RBNY 2, KC 1

DC United at LA Galaxy: Let’s just go a head and say it. LA has to win this game. They just have to or else their season will pretty much be done with. I love the assessment given by MLSnet’s Extratime show gave about Landon Donovan. I believe Shep said that Donovan is a great player but isn’t a good enough player to make those around him better. Point blank you are seeing that with the Galaxy right now. They aren’t getting better with what they have right now.

I think DC is coming in with a lot of momentum on their shoulders. Christian Gomez is playing like the MVP that we expect him to be.

International callups for the Galaxy will hurt their defense. DC won’t have a problem finding a way to score either.

I do hope to see more of Emilio for DC though. He hasn’t been the spark-plug that the United were expecting him to be this season. Only a couple goals to his name. It shouldn’t really matter though with the way the Galaxy are playing.

WVH Prediction: DC 2, LA 0

Sunday’s Games:

FC Dallas at Houston Dynamo: Very interesting match. I really truly don’t know which way this one will go. With De Rosario in the line-up I would easily have swung Houston’s way with this one even with the recent results. I just would have. But, with the call-ups going slightly against Houston’s way I think this one may turn out to be a draw.

Dallas just need to continue a decent pace right now. A win would be great but at the same time I think a draw works just as well. I know its a sad old adage about “win at home and look for the draw on the road,” believe me I know.

But looking at this matchup that is all I see right now, a draw. Neither club will be at full form in my mind. Sure it is a rivalry game but that doesn’t mean a whole lot in my mind yet with these two clubs. Colorado and Dallas is more of a rivalry than Houston and Dallas. It just is.

A draw is where I stand right now with these two.

WVH Prediction: Dallas 2, Houston 2

Columbus Crew at Chicago Fire:  I have to say, this may be worse looking than RSL-Chicago from last week. And honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if it turned out the same way as that game.

Its a new month for the Fire and they are hoping to rid themselves of their funk and Columbus is the perfect team to do that against, however, I just don’t see that playing out. I do expect goals in this one because of the two defenses that are playing but I don’t see a clear winner just yet here.

Sunday may prove to be the most boring day of the season so far for the league after two draws. I hope I am wrong though.

WVH Prediction: Columbus 1, Chicago 1

Vegas Placing Bets On Expansion Club

I didn’t really think that the Las Vegas expansion idea was a real one but it appears that it is a very serious one now. The Las Vegas Sports and Entertainment Group is ready to place a $35 million expansion fee to the league’s offices and get the okay to start building a club in the Valley.

Mark Noorzai, the sports group’s president, said he sent a letter of intent to MLS headquarters two weeks ago. He requested a response by today.

The league isn’t prepared to respond that quickly though. For good reason too. We should all remember the San Antonio deal that feel through a couple years ago.

Now I don’t think this deal will turn out anywhere like the San Antonio deal. For one they are expecting to build a stadium and field, where in San Antonio they weren’t really discussing the full details of a soccer only stadium. Las Vegas wants a $500 retractable-roof stadium with a hotel and casino attached to it, along with various amounts of soccer field with it on 200 acres of land.

Noorzai acknowledged that the deadline is soft and he won’t be dismayed if he doesn’t hear from MLS by today, Friday or early next week.

Is this a good fit for the league. I don’t think the gambling issue is anything to worry about but is Vegas a market that they league needs to take a gamble on? No other professional league is in the Vegas area and the MLS would be it’s first. Could be a good fit on that notion.

What are your thoughts on Las Vegas FC? If things go to their plan, they could be playing by possibly 2009 and at the latest 2010, when the league is expected to be at 16 teams.

WVH May Awards

A lot was learned in the month of May after a very odd and crazy start to the MLS season in April. Things are a lot clearer than a month ago and we pretty much have a solid idea of who is contending and who is just flat out bad.

WVH Player of the Month: Juan Pablo Angel, F, Red Bull New York – Was there any doubt about this one? Three goals, two assist. The Red Bulls have been on fire since he arrived and will probably continue to do so since, oddly enough they weren’t hurt by any Gold Cup call ups. Weird how that worked out. Expect the class and goals to come in the summer with this guy too.

WVH Coach of the Month: Steve Morrow, FC Dallas – Okay, so it is a homer pick on my part but seriously, despite all of the oddness surrounding Carlos Ruiz, Morrow found a way to lead his club to a near perfect May. They beat Chicago and KC on the road, two very tough places to win at. Morrow has found the right mix with his group and will continue to have to tinker with lineups do to all of these summer call-ups.

WVH Youngster of the Month: Maurice Edu, Toronto FC – Definitely is showing us why he was drafted number one by Toronto in this past year’s draft. I love watching this kid play in the midfield. He undoubtedly has a very bright future ahead of him.

WVH Keeper of the Month: Bouna Coundoul, Colorado Rapids – After a not to great start, Bouna has quickly become one of the more dependable keepers in the league. Some flat out amazing saves as of late adds to his impressive form.

WVH Best Atmosphere of the Month: Houston Dynamo at DC United – Toronto is still great but I have to give a hat tip to the Screaming Eagles and all the other crazies at DC. I enjoyed watching that game this past weekend with that crowd. The better the crowd the more enjoyable the games are to me.

WVH Bust of the Month: Jeff Cunningham, Toronto FC – Okay, this is more mainly before the trade to TFC but Cunningham’s form dropped off considerably with RSL and it showed in his last game with the club against Dallas. He didn’t look at all like he wanted to be on the pitch and it lead to his trade to our friends up in Canada. I do expect better play from him in the coming games because he is matched up with Dichio for the Reds and that is a scary scoring duo right there.

WVH Best XI for May:

Keeper: Bouna Coundoul, Colorado Rapids

Defense: Chris Gbandi, FC Dallas – nasty strike against RSL may be one of the top goals for the season so far

Carlos Mendes, Red Bull New York – Who you might ask? Mendes may be the most underrated player in the league at his position right now.

Jim Brennen, Toronto FC – Helped sure up a bad defense to begin the season. Probably scored the goal of the year so far this past weekend against Columbus

Midfield: Steve Ralston, New England Revolution – Safe to say that Ralston may be one of the most underrated players in league history? Possibly to some, but I cannot think of another player that I would want in my midfield these days but Ralston

Juan Pablo Toja, FC Dallas – A lot of buzz about this guy but you either enjoy his play or you question it a lot. Two goals in the month to help lead the Hoops to a near perfect month. I think you will hear a lot of his name this summer.

Christian Gomez, DC United – After a very slow start for the Black-and-Red, the defending league MVP is showing his form yet again leading the United to a perfect month. I think more from Gomez to come as he is really finding his form as of late.

Shalrie Joesph, New England Revolution – Think his contract disputes are over? Possibly, either that or he just wants to play until he can transfer out this summer. Either way he is making the Revs a major contender

Forwards: Juan Pablo Angel, Red Bull New York – Could he lead the league in scoring? Maybe, but he still has some work to do to catch up to some other guys. I think it will be safe to say he will score 15 goals this season though, and possibly tally close to 7 or 8 assist

Maykel Galindo, Chivas USA – If you haven’t seen this guy play it is because you either don’t care about the Goats or you aren’t quick enough when you do watch them. I love this kids pace and touch. He may be one of the best finds of the off season. He is quickly making Chivas fans forget about Amado Guevara.

Taylor Twellman, New England Revolution – What, no Eddie Johnson? Yeah, EJ got his three goals for the month in one game (yes against the Revs) but Taylor was a little more consistent for me in the month. Three goals were enough to place him over EJ and others in my top 11. How many goals will Taylor get this season? Probably close to 20, I would assume.

RSL May Have The Worst Front Office

I really hope this one comes back to bite me in the ass but really, does RSL really think that Richie Kotschau is the answer to their defensive needs?

Nonetheless, Kotschau has been training with the club for a matter of a few weeks here recently and was signed to the club this week. He is being dubbed as a “major acquisition” by the press which leads me to believe that the front office is talking it up in that way.

I know they are trying to fill the three empty spots on their roster but getting old veteran players isn’t always the answer.

Other reports are saying that Kasey Keller will soon be in a RSL uniform real soon as their negotiations are almost done. Thing still could go wrong but it appears that RSL is hoping to spend some top dollar on a keeper to help out their woes.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Keller but I don’t see why on earth you would spend DP style money on a keeper in this league. There are too many decent keepers in this league, and in all honesty, I think RSL is fine where they are at with their keeper situation. Sure Rimando isn’t the best answer but he has experience that a lot don’t have.

This club needs someone in the midfield to control the pace of the game for the club. That is the answer they are looking for. Not in the net.

I really don’t get the RSL front office but I hope these two deals come back at me and surprise me with stunning form.

Random Thoughs On A Rather Slow News Day

There really isn’t a lot of noteworthy news items today mainly in part that its almost the end of the month and I don’t figure on getting my May awards released until no earlier than tomorrow.

I’ve had many ideas in my head as of late that I want to discuss and have you all weigh in also. Just thoughts and feelings, not really stuff that should or will happen. So don’t take things the wrong way if I somehow upset you or your club or even your city, to which I am known to sometimes do.

———————————————————————————————————————-

I start you all with this…and stay with me on this but who do you think the league is rooting for more to win the Cup this year…New York or LA?

Seriously think about. LA because of Beckham’s arrival or New York because of well, it being New York? I doubt really the league actually roots for a certain club over the next but in order for the season and the league to do well they need clubs in their larger markets (New York, LA, Chicago) to do well.

Even though Beckham will do wonders for the league and we already have seen what he will do without him even being here, I still think the league wants and needs New York to win one for once. I just do. Sure the golden child in DC would be nice but for the league to get real popular it needs New York to be a success.

I don’t think I am beating a dead horse here either. Face it, other than the NFL which does great no matter what anymore, the MLB, NBA, and the NHL all do better when their larger cities do well and finish near or on the top.

So I pose this question to you all…does the league need New York to win it all for once this year or does it really matter how or what New York does this season?

I always enjoy the response I get out of this sort of question so I am eager to see where you all go with it.

————————————————————————————————————————–

Okay…the summer transfer window is about a month away. I know there is still plenty of soccer to be played before then but right now which club needs to heavily go after someone to make a push for the playoffs?

I think Houston needs some answers more than anyone. They aren’t looking like a playoff team anymore and for the most part it boils down to the fact that they cannot score anymore. We all say how bad the Crew are at scoring but folks…the Dynamo are worse in the goal’s for category right now. Five goals in  eight games doesn’t look well if you are trying to defend a championship.

Who should they go after is the biggest question. I think they need some Latin flare on their squad to get the locals going again. Sure they get good crowds but they need someone that the fans can connect with a little better. Ching and De Rosario are good, don’t get me wrong but the one thing this club really lacks is a strong Latin presence on their side.

Speaking of the transfer window, I think a good amount of clubs will be fairly active once it hits. Everyone needs to address some weaknesses or concerns.

Really the only teams I don’t see going after anyone are New York, Dallas, Columbus, and probably Kansas City. Everyone else will probably be looking or at least hinting at looking. Those four listed above I just don’t see doing anything, though New York wouldn’t surprise me all that much if they went looking and found another gold mine.

—————————————————————————————————————————

We will definitely know the level of all clubs in the coming weeks with the Gold Cup being played. Just about every team will be affected in some way from the Gold Cup.

Some players to keep an eye on are Houston’s Corey Ashe. He showed coming off the bench against DC that he can play and potentially produce. With DeRo gone, he will have to.

————————————————————————————————————————–

The damaged goods that Dallas got in the off season in Adrian Serioux may be back sooner than expected. He has began running in recent weeks and is hopeful that he will return sometime in June. Honestly, that is great news for Dallas. Sure Clarence Goodson and Alex Yi have played a bit above their expectations, but they haven’t played all that great in the long haul. The Hoops haven’t been so super giving up almost a league worst 14 goals, tied with RSL and one less than the league worse in Toronto.
With Serioux back in the summer I figure to see Alex Yi find a comfortable spot on the Dallas bench to make room for the Canadian. If he returns to form in a good manner, it could make the Hoops a very tough team to beat come later this summer after SuperLiga. Another western regular season crown may be in order but I think the bigger picture could be a longer stay in the playoffs.

—————————————————————————————————————————

Talks have been surfacing again and again about the definite possibility of San Jose returning next season. Sources have led told me that it will happen in the very near future and that the club will probably play in the same building as the Oakland Raiders and the Oakland A’s, in McAfee Coliseum. Though don’t be shocked if they end up in Stanford, in the school’s newly remodeled stadium.
For it to work they need a stadium of their own as we all know. Lee Wolff and company are working around the clock to get something in order. It will come, that much I can bet on. As of now there are plenty of areas in the Silicon Valley that want to or could house a stadium. The likeliest of places are near the airport, a place that Wolff is in current negotiations with the city about.

Expect the classic 60-90 days from the league on this issue though. But it will happen. It also basically means that there won’t be another club added until two more join in 2010. Thus meaning we get a year or so to debate who is next after this deal goes through.

—————————————————————————————————————————

Saw that FIFA is banning games scheduled in high altitude. Sure it raises health issues but I think the deal is a foot-in-mouth kind of thing from FIFA that doesn’t hold a lot of weight. I am sure some counties will take FIFA on about this issue.

I see the argument being that countries like Brazil play games at sea level on some of the hottest days. Yeah, its just as fair as playing at 8,200 feet above sea level I guess. Sucking for air or dry as a bone. Which could be worse?

I don’t see this deal working out too much longer really. Like I said, countries will fight about it and ultimately win over.

————————————————————————————————————————-

Anyone hear the stories that the Galaxy may loan Beckham for winter months to clubs in England? Who comes up with this crap? Really, why on earth would a club risk sending over its most prized possession to clubs in England that only want him for a few months? The risks greatly out weigh the reward here and I am glad the Galaxy have come out and said they wouldn’t do such a thing.

With the Galaxy, I guess anything could happen though with Alexi Lalas as their GM. Talk about a foot-in-mouth kind of guy really.

————————————————————————————————————————–

Last thing…

Anyone watch games on FCS? I love some of their broadcasts anymore for MLS games. I actually enjoy them a lot more than the ESPN2 ones. Kind of sad really. The on screen graphics for free kicks and offsides are so much better than the crappy lines that Wynalda will draw.

Also, the commentators are far better and less annoying. However there is one play-by-play guy on FCS that is even more annoying than Rob Stone or Dave O’Brien but for the life of me I cannot recall his name. He is the one usually screaming at the top of his lungs with someone scores. I think the guy listens to too many Spanish broadcasts before he does a game because he sounds like the English version of that. Anyone know his name? He wasn’t doing the Chivas-FCD game on Saturday though, that was Dave Johnson. Gotta love the “It’s in the NET! It’s in the NET!”

MLS Power Rankings

Some shakes in the rankings this week. May came to a close and we saw one team finish with a strong record, one finish without anything to talk about and another gained form. Which team is which though? I think you can guess…most of you are pretty savvy.

We will see a new number one as well as a few shakes in the top order of the line up. The bottom will look relatively similar to past weeks as well as how things shook up at the start of the 2007 campaign.

Ranking (last week Ranking) Team (points) -

1. (2) Red Bull New York (17 pt.) - Back on top, yet I still wonder if anyone in New York has noticed. I will say this about the Red Bulls, when they are home I will at least predict that they will score no less than two goals with about anyone that they play. Probably the most exciting three minutes the league has offered in the past few years last Thursday with the Red Bulls and the Fire. Remember, this team missed half…yes…half of their starters for that game. Scary, just flat out scary.

2. (1) New England Revolution (17 pts.) – Tough blow but I still feel they are a bit better than everyone else besides the Red Bulls. I almost thought that if the Revs had tied that game with KC that they would be a 1a and 1b with the Red Bulls atop the league rankings. Thankfully they get a really bad Salt Lake team next week at home. I think they will bounce back and be fine. This race in the east will be exciting.

3. (4) Colorado Rapids (15 pts.) - I think ESPN’s power rankings put it best about this club. Loaded with talent, plays ugly, yet finds ways to win. I question how this club will handle the hostile nature that is BMO Field next weekend though. No matter how ugly you play, you can’t do it in a place like BMO Field. I think that is a true test for this Rapids club.

4. (5) Kansas City Wizards (16 pts.) – I am not quick to bring this club all the way to two or three in my rankings just yet. Give this type of performance two weeks in a row and I will undoubtedly put you up there with the league’s best. Biggest test of the season comes this coming weekend against the Red Bulls at home. If Eddie Johnson has another performance like he did against the Revs then the Wizards will be a top notch club in this league, but he has to do it week in and week out. He can’t disappear for a few games in a row like he did for most of the month of May.

5. (3) FC Dallas (16 pt.) - Ugly loss against Chivas. They could have easily left the Toolbox with a point but failed to do so. I won’t say it is a cause for concern or anything though just yet. I am happy to see that people are starting to sing the praises of Juan Pablo Toja right now. He should be an all-star this summer for the league but since he isn’t a ‘big-name’ in the league just yet it won’t happen. The Hoops schedule will start to slow down in the MLS this coming month. A roadie to Houston gets things started. Three points would be huge.

6. (7) DC United (10 pts.) - Played their best soccer in May, by not dropping a game. Sure the competition wasn’t as rough as it was in April but still, points are points and DC will take them any way they can get them in a very compact and competitive eastern conference. Other teams in the east need to be aware of the United who have found their form and more importantly players like Christian Gomez have found their form. Probably the most dangerous team in the league right now…more so than New York.

7. (10) CD Chivas USA (11 pts.) - I said it in the preseason that Maykel Galindo would be exciting to watch. Five goals and two assist to his name and he is very quickly becoming the toast of the west in goals. Oh yeah, this team also has Ante Razov who knows how to score. This team is finding it’s form and identity. They only need to find a replacement in the middle for Guevara to make them and their fans forget about that whole mess. They get the week off, so I expect to hear them moving parts or at least talking up the rumor mill about foreign players to sign.

8. (6) Houston Dynamo (7 pt.) – Slowly creeping towards the bottom of the standings. Thankfully for Dynamo fans there are clubs like Real Salt Lake and the LA Galaxy right now doing worse. I don’t know what it really is about this club. I am guessing that its all resting on the happiness of Dewayne De Rosario. I don’t think he is anywhere near happy and it is showing on the field. Maybe a rivalry game with Dallas this week will be a help to motivate this club. They need something, that is for sure. Hate to say it but the more this trend continues, the more Dominic Kinnear is on the hot seat.

9. (12) Toronto FC (7 pt.) - Sure a draw on the road isn’t the full reason for this jump, but the biggest reason is the clubs around them and how they are playing. The Reds are playing well and now with Jeff Cunningham atop with Danny Dichio, you have to believe this club will be looked at even more as a treat in the east. They still have a long way to go to even be thought of as a playoff contender at this point but they are surely making things interesting. A win at home against Colorado would certainly raise some eyebrows.

10. (11) Columbus Crew (8 pt.) - The Crew with Andy Herron are a Crew that will make the playoffs. Without him they are a lost team offensively with a defense that is slowly falling apart. They have to find ways to win games or else they will be looking at another playoff-less season. Sigi on the hot seat for anyone yet? They get a reeling Chicago side this weekend on the road. I smell another draw.

11. (9) LA Galaxy (5 pt.) - Ugly play against Colorado. Just ugly. I hated watching even before they were a man down. I still do not see this club as a legitimate playoff contender even with the additions of Abel Xavier and David Beckham. It seems like the Galaxy enjoy the long ball to Donovan approach. They host DC this weekend, a win would do wonders for their confidence and honestly for the league’s confidence in having the Galaxy in playoff contention.

12. (8) Chicago Fire (11 pts.) - May was dreadful for the Fire. Three losses, one draw (against the league’s worst team), 11 goals against and only three scored. I have to say from the bits I have seen from yesterday’s contest with RSL, it was one of the worst games so far this season, if not, in the past couple of season. They need more than a point against Columbus this weekend, they need a total, full team effort…plus a win.

13. (13) Real Salt Lake (5 pt.) - Things are slowly changing for RSL. We know it wasn’t all John Ellinger’s fault. This team was just dreadful. But I like the moves. Yes I like the Esky trade more now than I did a few days ago. It will boost morale with the club. Make no mistake, things weren’t working with Jeff Cunningham in RSL land. Kries did a good thing shipping him off. I hear they want to make another couple moves. I really honestly hope they don’t sign Kasey Keller. Their problem isn’t in the net, it is what’s in front of it, that defense…and some of the midfield…and okay the attackers too. In other words, Kasey Keller wouldn’t solve all of their problems.

The Hottest Of Hot Seats

After a solid 3-1-0 start to the season the Chicago Fire have been 0-1-4 in their last five matches while being outscored 11-3 in that span. The month of May was very unkind to the Fire. Injuries and poor form plagued the Fire in the entire month giving the club one of its worst months in club history.

Losing on the road to the likes of the league’s best in New England and New York and at the time in the league’s worst in Toronto have given Fire fans nothing to be excited about or happy with.
The biggest disappointment may have came last night in a 0-0 draw to the league’s worst in Real Salt Lake.

After starting with 10 points in the month of April and tied atop the eastern standings, the Fire are currently in forth place with 11 points and barely looking in on the playoff picture (as if it were to start today). In all fairness they have been with out Chris Rolfe, their leading scorer for most of May. However, the Fire will have to continue to lean on other people as he will be called up to the USMNT for the Gold Cup in the coming weeks.

Many are calling for the firing of head coach Dave Sarachan. I have said he was on the hot seat to begin the season and even after their solid start. He hasn’t been able to find the right thing to help this team click without a proven scorer. I know they are waiting for the end of June for Blanco to make his debut but is that too long to wait? Luckily for the Fire the month of June is a relatively light schedule. Only three league matches with two of them at home.

I have said before that I didn’t believe Blanco would be the cure to the Fire’s woes but I will withhold judgment until I see anything else.

The biggest problem is really not the offense. Sure you need goals but defending your own net is a high priority and it is something the Fire haven’t been doing enough of in recent games. Sure they blanked RSL yesterday but they haven’t proven that they can hold a good team in the league to nothing at all (I know they blanked New England to begin the season, but the Revs totally dominated that game).

I believe Sarachan will be on the hot seat no matter what this season but I don’t see a firing just yet. The Fire may need to win the US Open Cup again and make the playoffs to save his job. If they don’t do at least one or both of those things, then we will see a new gaffer on the Fire bench next season.

What are your thoughts? Is it time for a change in the Windy City or should things be waited out for Blanco?

A Weekend That Was…

Sorry for a delay in posting today, I was on the road traveling my way back into town after a wedding in my hometown on  Saturday. All is well however, I got to see just about every game this weekend except for the one today, which wasn’t much of a game apparently.

I jotted down some notes about each game and I will start with the most cracking of them all…

KC 4 – 3 NE - Okay, I will admit, I am and have been very harsh on those Wizards this season. I did say though that my mind would change with a win over a good team. New England is a good team and winning in New England didn’t come easy for the Wizards yesterday.

Also, welcome back (at least for this weekend) Eddie Johnson. Just when everyone was ready to give the player of the week award to Juan Pablo Angel again, Mr. Grown-Ass Man steps up and knocks in a hat trip on the Revs. Very savvy play Mr. Johnson. I had been calling for his number for a few weeks now and he answered. All I ask in return is a bit more consistency on his part now. He cannot disappear for a few games in row like he had been doing as of late. The Wizards need him to be at his form like he was on Saturday every time he is there. I know that sound a bit fake but it is very true, point being, the Wizards are not a contender unless Eddie Johnson says so. Yesterday, he said so.

As for the Revs, it was a tough pill to swallow. Let’s face it, all good runs do end at some point and maybe this was theirs. Thankfully for the Revs they host Real Salt Lake next week. Should…and I mean should be a win. Should.

Toronto FC 2 – 2 Columbus Crew - Interesting contest really. I called for a draw and it came to me in a form a little greater than my 1-1 prediction.

Flat out the Crew look like a complete team with Andy Herron in the lineup and playing at his full potential. When he is not things tend to fall apart. You saw just that against Toronto who didn’t see to find their way on the road. A draw is one thing but three points always cures road worries.

Also, the goal by Jim Brennan was probably my goal of the week. More so than Juan Pablo Angel’s touch of class on Thursday night.

Toronto will return home next week while the Crew travel to the Windy City. Damn, talk about another game between two clubs that need three points there. Chicago has been hurting just as bad as the Crew have been.

DC 2 – 1 Houston – Wow, called it liked I saw it. Always a sense of luck when I get a score absolutely correct like this one. I don’t mean to brag but its true.

Wow, I want to say this, the Black-And-Red have the best fans in the league. As if we already didn’t know that. I loved the crowd at RFK yesterday. Very loud and very passionate. Toronto fans are up there as the top crowds with DC, however, the United’s fans are just a notch above the rest. Go figure right?

Houston looked alright at times in this game. Glad to see DeRo come alive in this one. Tough break missing the PK though. A striker will tell you a hundred times about a post that dooms him. Thankfully for the Dynamo it didn’t get DeRo down for long as he blasted away another chance. The ending of the match was a little slow. Houston tried but DC was just too good.

Don’t look now but the United are making a mark in the eastern standings. The 10 point hole is slowly getting lower. It is now at seven. A bit far still but the top of the mountain is in sight again.

Colorado 1 – 0 LA - Wow, I went two games in a row predicting the correct scoreline. Wow. I will take this moment for myself. Okay…I am done.

Let’s just say the Galaxy were never in this one. Okay? Even before the red card to Martino, the Galaxy were a bit lazy on the pitch. Colorado had some chances and didn’t take it but finally came through.

I think I also said something about Herculez Gomez making his mark on this game……..okay I am done with basking in my own glory for once.

Colorado keeps pace with Dallas while LA is slowly creeping down to the bottom. Don’t look now though, they are tied with RSL for last place…in the entire league!

Chivas 2 – 0 FC Dallas - This one was a tail of two halves. Dallas controlled the first half, had some chances (though Chivas had the scarier of chances) and almost pulled ahead. But in the second half it was Chivas pulling through and getting an early (and a late) goal to win the game.

Dallas looked like a MLS Cup contender at times but then also looked like a total pretender for the rest of the part.

To say the Hoops needed Carlos Ruiz would be an understatement. I know he was out with a suspension due to yellow cards but the fact remained, the Hoops needed him badly out there. No one was able to get a quality touch to finish a chance last night. Chivas took their chances and made the most of them.

I think the Goats will be creeping back up some power rankings for most people soon too. They are gaining the identity that alluded them once Guevara took off. That is a dangerous thing folks. I also think that Maykel Galindo could win the Golden Boot this year. He is that dangerous of a striker. He is two back of Taylor Twellman right now.

Chivas get next week off which may hurt them while Dallas will have to sort things out and travel to Houston.

Chicago 0 – 0 RSL – Again, didn’t see this game and didn’t miss much. I called for a draw and got it…I just figured there would be goals in it.

Both teams are hurting and are still in hurt. Chicago is winless in their last five while the Royals haven’t won at all this season.

I will say this about this past weekend. It started off with a bang and ended with a thud.
