Philadelphia Union Unveil Their Third Kit

Thanks to the internet (largely Big Soccer…yeah it’s still around), images of the new Philadelphia Union third jersey are here.

The team is paying tribute to Bethlehem Steel FC, a former juggernaut of American soccer. The team has stated that the jersey will be worn by the team for March 2′s season opener at PPL Park against Sport Kansas City.

The jersey has a modified BIMBO logo in the middle with a nice BSFC patch in the bottom corner.

I personally love seeing teams of yesterday get honored in this manner. I hope more MLS teams are able to reach out to the past and do stuff like this. Maybe not so much in a retro day style paying respect (another topic for another day) but to just show the country and new fans of the game that American soccer has been around for a long time. Colorado Rapids Unveil New Jerseys

Yesterday was the start of MLS’s new Jersey Week. Several clubs unveiled new jerseys and while the Houston Dynamo and New York Red Bulls had small updates to their kits, it was the Colorado Rapids that knocked their new kits out of the park.

namesThe primary is the first in MLS history to feature the names of each of the club’s season-ticket holders, while the design of the alternate kit is inspired by the Colorado state flag.

Yes, you read that correctly. If you are a season ticket holder for the Rapids, your name appears on the kit. How cool is that?

“The great thing about the Colorado primary jersey is that it has all 1,451 season ticket-holder names in the jersey,” said Mike Walker, adidas product manager. “Those hoops are made up of all of those names.” Continue Reading →

2012 MLS All Star Game To Go Smart

Get ready to see a smarter Major League Soccer.

MLS and adidas announced the 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game on July 25 in Philadelphia will be the world’s first “smart soccer match” and will feature the new micoach professional soccer team tracking system, the next step in player performance analysis technology.

According to the press release sent out the micoach professional soccer team tracking system provides coaches with real time performance metrics on the field of play including player position, power output, speed, distance covered, intensity of play, acceleration and GPS heat mapping.

This announcement follows the launch of the world’s first smart cleat – the adizero f50 micoach.

“adidas has always been known as a pioneer, an innovator and an industry-leader when it comes to the sport of soccer,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. “It is an honor that they have chosen to debut their new game-changing and revolutionary technology at this year’s AT&T MLS All-Star Game in Philadelphia. adidas has quickly become a leader in sports analytics and we believe our All-Star Game will serve as the perfect opportunity to introduce the new micoach professional soccer team tracking system.”

I’m a tech geek at heart, and even more recently a health tech geek. I wear a health tracking system on myself to monitor my daily steps and sleep. So hearing that MLS is going all out on this kind of thing for the All Star Game has me very excited.

What do you all think of the first “smart” soccer game? Sounds pretty interesting huh?

NFL Soccer Jerseys

I saw this link earlier and boy did it get passed around twitter like crazy. I finally got time this evening to talk about it and post the images from it. Someone out there had some mad photoshop skills and did some NFL team’s soccer kits.

Honestly these are all great. My favorites are St. Louis, Buffalo, and Green Bay. I mentioned earlier on Twitter that I’m not the biggest NFL fan but these would certainly make me want to buy one.

(Note: If anyone finds out who did these please let us know, they deserve loads of credit for them!)

What do you all think?

Kit Talking: Seattle and Toronto

2009 not only brings a new club to Major League Soccer but it also ushers in some new kits for some of the 15 MLS clubs. The newest recently showed off their kits up in the Great Northwest with a fashion show, while others are slowly finding their way to the world wide web.

I’m only going to talk about two club’s kits today. I’ve seen some other pictures of other clubs out there who may have new kits for this year but I am waiting on some official word from each club about them.

My bet is that we will see new or updated kits from Houston, possibly New York and Chivas, and maybe a slight updates to LA’s road kit and Colorado’s home and away kits. I believe those are the only clubs out there with a possibility for a kit update. RSL could be another club but I need to double check that.

I know clubs like Dallas, San Jose, Chicago (EDIT: double checking that), DC, Columbus, and KC all got slight upgrades to their kits last year. I’m still checking in on New England’s kits and when they are due for a change of any kind, it may be this winter and it may not be.

Not bad really. My favorite touch of any the jerseys I’ve seen so far this winter is the addition of the US or Canadian flag to the kits. Toronto showed off their Maple Leafs this week as well.

Cool New MLS T-Shirts

I had heard about a company that was doing some cool soccer related t-shirts a few weeks back during a few listens in on the World Soccer Daily show. The company is called Who Are Ya Designs. It was said a few weeks back that they were in the process of designing some super-cool MLS shirts. Apparently those are our for the public to buy.

Big hat tip to SF over at The Offsides Rules for posting all of this today.

Below are a MLS-related shirts. My favorites are the LandyCakes shirt, the I voted Sounders and a non-MLS shirt saying I Scored on Derby County. Really some great stuff there. I don’t normally plug sites like this unless they pay me to do so, but if you are this creative I cannot turn away from letting everyone else in on the fun.
