Hyndman: We Must Protect Our Players

Are players getting proper protection from the MLS referees?

That is a widely debatable topic depending on which coach you are talking to and how his club did in the previous game. Some managers are quick to tell you that protection of key players is still fairly weak. Given how physical some matches have been lately in the league, it is hard to argue with them.

After FC Dallas beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 on Saturday, manager Schellas Hyndman, someone who is always quick to say that his players need more protection offered up his thoughts on how little players are getting protected.

“It is really difficult out there,” said Hyndman. “I think what you are starting to see is a lot of physical play. It is either going no calls. Or the physical plays are getting the calls with no cards. I guess the point is that the players are almost at a point where they are getting a little bit nervous of the physical play. There is no penalty to it. I think it is not just this game but is the way it has been going this year.”

The match ended with nearly 30 fouls combined between the two squads. Vancouver had a couple more as they edged out Dallas 15-12 on what ended up being a physical night. There were only two yellow cards shown on the night too. One to Nigel Reo-Coker and the other to George John.

What are are seeing is more referees pulling players aside to talk things over with them. Seeing fewer cards is nice but protecting players a bit more is the message here.

“It seems to be a lot of consoling,” said Hyndman. “Where referees are talking to players saying ‘okay I’ve had enough, don’t do it any more,’ what we need to do is protect players.”

It wasn’t just the number of fouls on David Ferreira that had Hyndman concerned.

“I don’t care if it is David (Ferreira). I don’t care if it is Camilo from Vancouver. They need to be protected,” said Hyndman.

Giving Grades: How First and Second Year MLS Bosses Stack Up

It seems as though with each passing season in Major League Soccer we get a new crop of coaches in the league. Last year we got a couple new coaches and this season was no different with five new managers roaming the sidelines.

After seven weeks I feel as though we know a greater deal about each coach. Some are doing very well while others are still navigating the tricky and difficult MLS waters.

Typically at this time of the year we can begin to see a coaching hot seat forming and while I may get to that soon, I felt it was better to take a step back and see how the newcomers were fairing. Here is how I see them all doing so far this season with the sophomore coaches included as well.

2013 MLS Season Preview: Western Conference

Could this be the year that Sigi Schmid and Seattle really celebrate? (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

Earlier in the day I predicted how I thought the Eastern Conference would be in the new season.

Time now to examine the Western Conference for the 2013 MLS season.

To me the West is a bit of an interesting group of teams. Top to bottom I think they are still as deep as they have been these last couple of seasons but I do see a bit of a changing of the guard going on here. Teams we know will be good may not be as good as we’ve seen while others may surprise us.

Five Teams Show Off New Kits

Yesterday was a full day in the league’s new Jersey Week. Five clubs showed off gear, with one of the clubs displaying their new third kits.

This week has been very fun with the unveiling of new kits. Some have been good, others have been alright. I think Wednesdays five unveilings showed that teams are willing to be bold with their kits for 2013.  Continue Reading →

2013 MLS Season Preview: Vancouver Whitecaps

Time for the final team preview here (you can view all season previews at this link). Last up are the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Martin Rennie got his club to be the first Canadian club to reach the MLS playoffs last year. Though one could say they stumbled their way into the playoffs, the Whitecaps had a pretty solid 2012 season.

As long as the Whitecaps do not do what they did in the middle of the summer and re-do their roster, they should be fine with some of these new additions for 2013. Their defense is still stout but has the offense had enough time to get better for the new season? Let’s find out.

The Mess Of Discovery Claims

Will Portland be able to sign Mikael Silvestre or not? (Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports)

Will Portland be able to sign Mikael Silvestre or not? (Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports)

Oh Major League Soccer. Your rules frustrate and confuse even those who have been watching you since day one. I get it though. You want to cover your butts as much as possible and keep the parity party alive and well. Again, I get it.

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve noticed a fair amount of discussion around the league on the ol’ discovery claim system that the league uses in regards to signing foreign players. Lately we’ve seen the likes of veteran internationals like Mikael Silvestre, Nigel Reo-Coker and Djimi Traoré all come and play part in various MLS camps. And that is where the trouble lies.  Continue Reading →

What’s Lacking: San Jose, Seattle and Vancouver Preseason Look

San Jose and Seattle still have work left to do. (Photo via US Presswire)

Rounding out the preseason look ins with three clubs instead of the usual two like the rest of the series – blame that on the unbalancedness of MLS.

Yesterday in the day I looked at Chivas USA and the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas and the LA Galaxy. Earlier today I examined the Portland Timbers and Real Salt Lake.

Just for a recap, I am looking at what items are missing as each team is beginning their preseason camps this week.

San Jose Earthquakes

- Deeper in the back. They went out and got a ton of new faces through the Re-Entry Draft and other methods but did San Jose actually get deeper in the back this offseason? I’m not totally convinced that they did. Their outside back depth is pretty lacking even with the new faces.

- Creative force in the midfield. Rafeal Baca was solid in 2012 leading the attack and setting things up. So was Simon Dawkins. But outside of that Baca needs some cover with the extra games on tap for this season. And what if he were to get hurt? I think San Jose could fare without him for a few games if they had to but this is one area that I would not take lightly if I were Frank Yallop.

Seattle Sounders FC

- Center back depth. Losing Jeff Parke was a tough one but Seattle may struggle this year in the center of their defense because of that loss. Jhon Kennedy Hurtado is good but you know he’ll miss some games with injuries or even a silly booking or two. Outside of him the Sounders don’t have a ton of help. Patrick Ianni is solid but is still in no way a full time starter in my book. Eriq Zavaleta may or may not be a center back, depending on what Sigi Schmid is thinking – and still he’s a rookie. I think finding a quality center back may be a higher priority than another striker.

- Help for Johnson. Yeah, Fredy Montero is gone for the year so his DP slot is available too. I doubt we see anyone new come in before the summer though. Seattle can get by for the first few months with what they have up top and hope that no one gets hurt.

Vancouver Whitecaps

- All the speed but no one to hold the ball up front. I know they still have Kenny Miller but I doubt he sticks around much longer given what I’ve heard out of Vancouver. They added a ton of speed on the outside in the attack this winter but they don’t have anyone good enough to hold the ball up and distribute into that open space. Having speed is great but the Caps still need someone to facilitate it.

- Fullback depth. They have some good defenders but the depth in the back is still lacking. I think more so on the wings than in the middle – but that area is lacking as well. Martin Rennie has a good defense but should one or more of the starters get hurt early on, you will see exactly how big it is to have good depth in the defense. Right now he does not.

Knockout Round Quick Pick: Vancouver at LA

I’m a bit pressed for time today to write a ton. Got some important things going on in life (like supporting my wife in her Komen 3Day walk adventure, donate to her team here if you please. )

But here is my pick for tonight’s knockout round game between Vancouver and LA. For the rest of my playoff predictions, click here.

Vancouver Whitecaps at LA Galaxy: Naturally we know that Vancouver backed into the playoffs and are easily the worst team in the post season. Anything can happen in these games and LA could be over looking Vancouver for a date with rivals San Jose. Count on a feisty game at the start but expect the veterans of this LA squad to step up when it matters most.

WVH Prediction: LA 3, Vancouver 1

2012 MLS Cup Playoffs: Western Conference Preview

Seattle and RSL look to be one of the best series in this year’s playoffs. (Getty Images)

Earlier I gave you a look at the knockout and semifinal rounds in the East. Now it is time for the West.

While the East has five teams that can easily win it all in my mind, the West isn’t that way. You’ll see what I am talking about here shortly.

So let’s get down to it. Just like with the Eastern Conference, once the finals are set, I’ll come back and preview those in this manner.

Breaking Down The Western Conference Playoff Race

Vancouver is in the driver’s seat for the final playoff spot out West. (Getty Images)

A month ago the MLS Playoff races were a bit different than they are today. The Eastern Conference was jumbled but not nearly as much as it is right now. Out West was a different story as five teams seemingly had done enough to get in the playoff mix – or so we thought.

The true playoff race in the West is what we will examine today. Obviously the race between Seattle, Salt Lake and LA for positions 2, 3, and 4 will be a fun race to view in the final weeks as well but that one isn’t nearly as good as the one for the fifth and final spot between FC Dallas and the Vancouver Whitecaps.

One teams has a game in hand over the other at the moment but that won’t be the biggest decider of the two teams. Nor will the fact that Vancouver has four home games left to Dallas’ one.

So let’s break it down here.  Continue Reading →
