After weeks of tweets, rumors and reports the Seattle Sounders FC have officially loaned out forward Fredy Montero to Colombian side Millonarios.

On Monday, the club made it official, announcing that Montero, 25, will spend the 2013 season with the Bogata-based Millonarios.

It was also noted in the press release from the Sounders that the club has also signed him to a multi-year deal before loaning him out.

“Fredy has been a fantastic player and pro for Sounders FC over our first four years,” said Adrian Hanauer, Sounders owner and general manager, in a statement released by the club. “We wish Fredy the best of success with Millonarios as he continues to develop as a player. We hope this move helps Fredy’s chances of being called up to the Colombian national team, as he has certainly earned it.”

The move is a big one for Seattle as it will open up a Designated Players slot on the Sounders’ roster for the 2013 season. Currently Christian Tiffert and Mauro Rosales are taking up the other two slots.

Replacing the 25-year old forward will be a tall task though. Montero leaves the Seattle as the club’s all-time leading scorer with 47 goals in league play. In total, he has 60 goals and 43 assists across all competitions. Only Dwayne de Rosario has more combined goals and assists over the last few seasons than Montero does.

Weighted Lottery Set For Youth International Today

Edit: Portland won the lottery for Fehr.

This little bit of news snuck in late and I am just now getting around to it. Here shortly, there will be a weighted lottery to determine where US youth international Mobi Fehr, who signed with MLS on Nov. 14, will be allocated to one of the Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders or San Jose Earthquakes.

According to MLS roster rules, players eligible for the weighted lottery are: “Generation adidas players signed after the MLS SuperDraft or draft eligible players to whom an MLS contract was offered but who failed to sign with the League prior to the Draft.”

The 18-year old defender was apart of the U-17 national side that played in the 2011 U-17 World Cup in Mexico.

According to the league release, Fehr has an interesting background. He was born in New York, but also holds Japanese and Swiss citizenship through his parents. He moved to Tokyo with his family at the age of six and came up through the youth ranks of Japanese outfit Tokyo Verdy before enjoying a short stint at Swiss powerhouse FC Basel.

The odds are very much in the Timbers favors with this lottery as they hold an 83% chance of winning. Fehr also trained with the Timbers for a few weeks back in October and November before signing with the league.

According to league rules, a team that acquires a player via weighted lottery may not do so again in the same season unless all teams have acquired a player via weighted lottery or waived their option to participate in the lottery. In Fehr’s case, the lottery will count for the upcoming 2013 season. That allows the Earthquakes, who won a weighted lottery for forward Marcus Tracy on Sept. 13, to be eligible for the Fehr lottery.

Once the results are posted I’ll have an update here with it.

2012 MLS Cup Playoffs, Conference Finals: What We Learned

The Home Depot Center is ready for round two between the Dynamo and Galaxy. (Getty Images)

The MLS Cup is now set. For the second straight seasons we will get the unlikely final pairing of the LA Galaxy and the Houston Dynamo, at the Home Depot Center. Crazy how this all shook out in the end but honestly this will be a fantastic final in two weeks.

Yesterday saw the end of the year for D.C. United and the Seattle Sounders. Both had strong seasons but each fell short in the end.

I think there were plenty of talking points from last night’s two games. And there will be plenty of other talking point over the next two weeks as well.  Continue Reading →

2012 MLS Playoffs, Conference Finals: What To Watch For

Will Dwayne De Rosario be able to make an impact? (US Presswire)

The final showdown in the playoffs before the big finale on December 1. Houston and LA take their big leads on the road this weekend in a hope to reach their second straight MLS Cup against one another.

There are a few story lines in each series to look out for and I have you all covered here as we go into the weekend.

1. Can LA and Houston keep the status quo?

Houston enters this weekend with a 3-1 lead over D.C. United as the series shifts to RFK Stadium. On the other side of the bracket the LA Galaxy go to Seattle with a 3-0 lead. Both are big and both are dangerous. LA knows that they cannot for a second take their foot off the pedal and I’m sure Houston feels the same way with a two goal advantage.

Each side has to play to their strengths, LA with their attack up front with Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan; and Houston with their set pieces and strong play out of Will Bruin.  Continue Reading →

Robbie Keane powered LA over Seattle. (Getty Images)

Boy, how about that start to the conference finals in each series? The quick and dirty of it all shows that we may be headed to our second straight MLS Cup in LA with the Galaxy hosting the Houston Dynamo. But more on that in a moment.

I have a few thoughts from each match as we move towards the second leg of each series. Inch by inch we can see the MLS Cup in out future.  Continue Reading →

2012 MLS Cup Playoffs: Conference Finals Preview

The Dynamo hope to advance past D.C. to their second straight MLS Cup. (Getty Images)

The conference finals kick off on Sunday afternoon as MLS moved the Eastern Conference final to Sunday due to the snow storm in New York. Both finals are now set so it is time to break each down before they get underway.

Eastern Conference

D.C. United vs. Houston Dynamo

The Dynamo are back in the conference finals for what seems like the billionth time against a team that hasn’t been there in ages. United let their emotions run wild against New York and it worked out well. But going up against a veteran squad like Houston, they’ll have to get their emotions in check if they want to advance and host the MLS Cup.

Unsung Hero for Houston: Bobby Boswell. This guy was a total beast in the KC series and I see him being a big part of Houston’s success in this round as well. Boswell has done well at stepping into the leader role in the back line once Geoff Cameron left this summer.

Unsung Hero for D.C.: Brandon McDonald. I’m going defensive here as well and I believe McDonald doesn’t get as much love as he should. He’s a big reason why the United defense has improved so much over the last two seasons and he is a calming force in the back.

How Houston can win: Simple, by playing their style of soccer. Dominic Kinnear is a master this time of year and he’s getting plenty out of the right players on the field. The Dynamo depth is also showing up as role players off the bench are doing their part. Houston will need to do exactly what they did in the SKC series, win a strong game at home and then do just enough on the road to advance.

How D.C. can win: First of all they have to get their emotions in check. Red cards to youngsters like Bill Hamid and Andy Najar in the New York series were a signal that this team still has a long ways to go before they are a big time force in this league. They are damn close though, damn close. I think just playing with tempo and not forcing a lot of dump mistakes in the back that give Houston set pieces will go a long way in this series.

The edge: Goes to Houston for me. The Dynamo have been there and with this being a two game series and not a one-off, I like their chances better.

Western Conference

LA Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders

Seattle finally found a way to win their first playoff series in a nail-biter against Salt Lake. Now they advance to play the LA Galaxy, a team that has “been there” many times before, including last year’s title run. LA has the right mix of talent and leadership to get the job done while Seattle hopes their energy on the field will be enough to get them to their first MLS Cup.

Unsung hero for LA: Tommy Myers. Hey, everyone knew that San Jose would target the rookie but he did very well. It also didn’t hurt that Omar Gonzalez played his ass off in the two games against the Quakes too. That made Myers job a lot easier against the high-powered San Jose offense.

Unsung hero for Seattle: Mario Martinez. The Honduran got the game and series winner against Salt Lake. But that isn’t why I like him here in this spot, I think we’re finally seeing exactly why Seattle went out of their way to sign him this summer. He has a load of talent and on the right stage, he can perform brilliantly.

How LA can win: Same as the San Jose series, using their leadership and experience to guide them. Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane and David Beckham all looked like the big time stars that they are in the second game against San Jose and the result was a big one, 3-1 over the Supporters’ Shield winners on the road.

How Seattle can win: By not letting LA get the best of them. These two have traded some big blows to one another over the years and Seattle knows LA can beat them at any point. Seattle just has to play their game, use tempo to drive the offense like they did against Salt Lake and press the back four of LA as much as possible.

The edge: For me is a split but I lean towards LA. The Galaxy experiences just matters a little more to me in this series.

2012 MLS Cup Playoffs: Western Conference Preview

Seattle and RSL look to be one of the best series in this year’s playoffs. (Getty Images)

Earlier I gave you a look at the knockout and semifinal rounds in the East. Now it is time for the West.

While the East has five teams that can easily win it all in my mind, the West isn’t that way. You’ll see what I am talking about here shortly.

So let’s get down to it. Just like with the Eastern Conference, once the finals are set, I’ll come back and preview those in this manner.

Seattle’s Fans To Vote On GM’s Future

Adrian Hanauer (left) will have his job voted on by the fans. (Getty Images)

One of the most talked about things surrounding the Seattle Sounders as an expansion team was the notion that every few years their fans would be able to vote on their General Manager’s position.

It turns out that time has come.

Sounders fans will have the chance to vote if current GM Adrian Hanauer is worth keeping on board for another term or if it is time for him to move on.

The online vote will begin on Oct. 7 at noon (PT) and conclude until Dec. 7 at 11:59 p.m. (PT). More details on the voting process will be announced next week.

Patterned after the FC Barcelona model, which boasts more than 160,000 members worldwide, Sounders FC season-ticket members will have a voice by participating in the general manager elections every four years.

The chairman of the Alliance is actor/comedian Drew Carey.

He is part of the investor group led by Hollywood executive Joe Roth that launched the MLS Sounders in 2009. His roots with the Sounders date back to their NASL days when he was a fan as a little kid. For lack of better terms, Hanauer bleeds Rave Green.

What do you think Sounders’ fans? Should Hanauer keep his job?

Friday Five: Questions, Thoughts Going Into The Weekend

This is something I am thinking of either doing from time to time or even on a weekly basis. Just some random thoughts, questions going into the weekend for the state of MLS and US Soccer. With a FIFA date upon us, a lot of MLS players are out with their respective countries, while some MLS teams either have games (one league game and a few friendlies are on the menu this weekend) or others are off completely hoping to get back in the swing of things for the playoff push.

So, a Friday Five if you will. A micro brain dump of what I am thinking going into the weekend.

1. Can Chivas USA spring the upset in Seattle?

It wasn’t long ago that Seattle went down to LA and crushed – and I mean crushed – Chivas USA. A 6-2 blowout that really showcased how good Seattle can be on any given day and how bad of a team Chivas USA really is down to it’s core. For some reason this rematch of a game is set for tomorrow evening and you have to wonder what Chivas will really make of it when they go to Seattle. The Goats have played well on the road this season – which makes me think this could be a bit of a trap game for the Sounders.  Continue Reading →
