Philadelphia Hosting Star Wars Day

Yep. You can’t make this stuff up apparently. The Philadelphia Union announced today that the club will host Star Wars Day during the May 4th match against Seattle Sounders at PPL Park.

The game, a 4:00 p.m. kickoff, will feature interactive games, contests and promotional giveaways in conjunction with the iconic film series created by George Lucas.

So a costume contest will be done. Special t-shirts will be made. And more. Wow.

Star Wars-themed Union T-Shirts displaying “MAY THE FORCE BE WITH DOOP” on the front will be available for $150. The limited-edition T-Shirts will also be for sale that day in the Union Shop with all proceeds benefitting the Philadelphia Union Foundation.

I have to say the shirts are pretty sweet looking. I’m not the biggest Star Wars geek out there but I do think this is a pretty neat promotion by the Union.

More details on the day can be found here.

Djimi Traore’s Screamer Against Tigres

Holy cow. Djimi Traore you are a crazy guy. I like where the Seattle Sounders are headed with this guy in their defense. The fact that he can also score screamers like this has to put the rest of MLS on notice.

Seattle and Traore completed the impressed comeback last night against Tigres in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League. Now they head to the semifinals after becoming the first MLS side to knock out a Mexican team in the knockout format of this tournament – very impressive feat to say the least.

Tonight we’ll see if the Houston Dynamo can make it two-for-two this year in the CCL knockout stage when they head to Santos Laguna. LA is also up for a trip to the semifinals when they host Costa Rican side Herediano tomorrow night in LA.

Boy it would be great to see three MLS sides reach the knockout stage. That would be a first in this competition for the league as well.

2013 MLS Season Preview: Western Conference

Could this be the year that Sigi Schmid and Seattle really celebrate? (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

Earlier in the day I predicted how I thought the Eastern Conference would be in the new season.

Time now to examine the Western Conference for the 2013 MLS season.

To me the West is a bit of an interesting group of teams. Top to bottom I think they are still as deep as they have been these last couple of seasons but I do see a bit of a changing of the guard going on here. Teams we know will be good may not be as good as we’ve seen while others may surprise us.

Five Teams Show Off New Kits

Yesterday was a full day in the league’s new Jersey Week. Five clubs showed off gear, with one of the clubs displaying their new third kits.

This week has been very fun with the unveiling of new kits. Some have been good, others have been alright. I think Wednesdays five unveilings showed that teams are willing to be bold with their kits for 2013.  Continue Reading →

2013 MLS Season Preview: Homegrown Talent

Each year Major League Soccer is growing not just on and off the field but in how they grow their own talent. Academies are getting to the point where they are producing quality talent each season soon enough MLS teams will be able to take full advantage of a younger player in their every day lineup.

We’ve seen some success so far in the Homegrown movement. Andy Najar is the obvious best example. In his rookie season with D.C. United, the Honduran midfielder earned the league’s Rookie of the Year award. He was the first Homegrown to win the award and to this day remains the only one to as well. Najar was also recently the first Homegrown player to get transferred overseas.

This winter several MLS squads made Homegrown signings. Dallas, Columbus and New York each signed a couple of their own in hopes that they have the next best young start.

So who are these Homegrown players? Here is a good list of who you should be expecting to get some playing time in 2013. Continue Reading →

Disappointing may be the word some Seattle Sounders fans use when they discuss the 2012 season. After finally making a breakthrough in the playoffs by beating Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference semifinals, the Sounders fell once again to the LA Galaxy in the conference finals.

So now a new year and season are upon us and Sigi Schmid has made some serious changes to his club before going into this new season. Fredy Montero is out on loan all season and now Shalrie Joseph is in to show that he still has it after a disappointing season with Chivas USA.

But has all the changes been enough to get Seattle over the top?  Continue Reading →

Report: Shalrie Joseph Traded To Seattle

Update: Seattle has also acquired the No. 3 Allocation ranking, a 2014 natural second round SuperDraft pick and a 2015 natural second round SuperDraft pick from Chivas USA in exchange for Seattle’s No. 15 Allocation ranking. Joseph will occupy a Designated Player slot for Seattle.

Call it a change of heart. Just when you thought the Seattle Sounders weren’t interested in midfielder Shalrie Joseph, they changed their minds.

Reports now say that Seattle has traded for the veteran midfielder from Chivas USA for a second-round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

No word yet on how much Seattle is actually going to be paying Joseph this season. He was slated to become a Designated Player in 2013. I can’t imagine Seattle would give up their open DP slot for a guy that isn’t a striker. Chivas USA will likely be on the hook for a good chunk of Joseph’s salary, if not all of it. I’d imagine this will be a deal that is very similar to what we saw out of Toronto FC last year when they sent Julian de Guzman packing to Dallas for a second round draft pick.

Furthermore, it will be interesting to see what changed Seattle’s minds. Joseph was in camp for one day before head coach Sigi Schmid claimed that a deal wouldn’t be done and that Joseph was out of shape.

The Mess Of Discovery Claims

Will Portland be able to sign Mikael Silvestre or not? (Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports)

Will Portland be able to sign Mikael Silvestre or not? (Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports)

Oh Major League Soccer. Your rules frustrate and confuse even those who have been watching you since day one. I get it though. You want to cover your butts as much as possible and keep the parity party alive and well. Again, I get it.

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve noticed a fair amount of discussion around the league on the ol’ discovery claim system that the league uses in regards to signing foreign players. Lately we’ve seen the likes of veteran internationals like Mikael Silvestre, Nigel Reo-Coker and Djimi Traoré all come and play part in various MLS camps. And that is where the trouble lies.  Continue Reading →

What’s Lacking: San Jose, Seattle and Vancouver Preseason Look

San Jose and Seattle still have work left to do. (Photo via US Presswire)

Rounding out the preseason look ins with three clubs instead of the usual two like the rest of the series – blame that on the unbalancedness of MLS.

Yesterday in the day I looked at Chivas USA and the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas and the LA Galaxy. Earlier today I examined the Portland Timbers and Real Salt Lake.

Just for a recap, I am looking at what items are missing as each team is beginning their preseason camps this week.

San Jose Earthquakes

- Deeper in the back. They went out and got a ton of new faces through the Re-Entry Draft and other methods but did San Jose actually get deeper in the back this offseason? I’m not totally convinced that they did. Their outside back depth is pretty lacking even with the new faces.

- Creative force in the midfield. Rafeal Baca was solid in 2012 leading the attack and setting things up. So was Simon Dawkins. But outside of that Baca needs some cover with the extra games on tap for this season. And what if he were to get hurt? I think San Jose could fare without him for a few games if they had to but this is one area that I would not take lightly if I were Frank Yallop.

Seattle Sounders FC

- Center back depth. Losing Jeff Parke was a tough one but Seattle may struggle this year in the center of their defense because of that loss. Jhon Kennedy Hurtado is good but you know he’ll miss some games with injuries or even a silly booking or two. Outside of him the Sounders don’t have a ton of help. Patrick Ianni is solid but is still in no way a full time starter in my book. Eriq Zavaleta may or may not be a center back, depending on what Sigi Schmid is thinking – and still he’s a rookie. I think finding a quality center back may be a higher priority than another striker.

- Help for Johnson. Yeah, Fredy Montero is gone for the year so his DP slot is available too. I doubt we see anyone new come in before the summer though. Seattle can get by for the first few months with what they have up top and hope that no one gets hurt.

Vancouver Whitecaps

- All the speed but no one to hold the ball up front. I know they still have Kenny Miller but I doubt he sticks around much longer given what I’ve heard out of Vancouver. They added a ton of speed on the outside in the attack this winter but they don’t have anyone good enough to hold the ball up and distribute into that open space. Having speed is great but the Caps still need someone to facilitate it.

- Fullback depth. They have some good defenders but the depth in the back is still lacking. I think more so on the wings than in the middle – but that area is lacking as well. Martin Rennie has a good defense but should one or more of the starters get hurt early on, you will see exactly how big it is to have good depth in the defense. Right now he does not.
