MLS Expansion: 20th Club To Be Announced Soon

Well this was a little nugget of information to drop on us all last night.

Speaking to reporters in Toronto, MLS Commissioner Don Garber first said the league hoped to have an announcement in  4-6 weeks.

Garber didn’t say New York specifically or any city for that matter but let’s be honest, it is New York. Continue Reading →

De Rosario Traded To DC For McCarty

Dax McCarty is on the move yet again. (Getty Images)

Yes, this is indeed real. Dwayne De Rosario has been traded from the New York Red Bulls to D.C. United in exchange for Dax McCarty.

Let that one sink in for a moment. DeRo for Dax. Straight up.

De Rosario began the 2011 MLS season with Toronto FC, registering one goal and one assist in two matches before being dealt to the New York Red Bulls on April 1. Since then he has scored two goals and bagged four assists.

McCarty went to United on November 24, 2010 following the MLS Expansion Draft, in which the Portland Timbers acquired the midfielder with the first overall pick. McCarty had two assists on the season with D.C.

Man, talk about a trade that will certainly mix things up in the Eastern Conference. In a way I want to think that New York is getting the better end of this deal as McCarty will certainly be a solid addition to their midfield for Hans Backe. McCarty should thrive in New York’s possessional attack, he never really got a chance to shine in D.C. this season in my book.

As for the other side of the ball, DeRo going to his third team this season is baffling. I like the move for D.C. as it gives them an element in their attacking midfield that they’ve lacked this season. Its a gamble for sure as DeRo is always a tough guy to deal with in the locker room but if he shows up and leads, this club will certainly be pushed up into the playoff discussion here.

I also think that this could be a deal that DeRo wanted as New York was probably unlikely to give him the kind of money that he truly wants at the end of this season. My gut also tells me that New York could be opening up some cap space to sign a new keeper too. Just a hunch.

What do you make of this trade? Who got the better end of the deal?

Hahnemann Waived By Wolverhampton, Return To MLS In The Works?

I made a list a while back of players I thought best fit the mold of coming back to play in Major League Soccer either this year or even in the next. One of those players was veteran keeper Marcus Hahnemann, who was let go by Wolverhampton today after two years with the club.

The 38-year old is with the US National Team right now getting ready for the Gold Cup. Hahnemann will likely be the number two keeper behind Tim Howard for the Cup.

Hahnemann is no stranger to MLS as he once played for the Colorado Rapids back in the late 90s. With MLS being a completely different animal since his last go around in the league, he would still find himself as one of the best keepers in the league should he sign with a club this summer.

Being that he is a returning USMNT player, he’ll go in the Allocation system should he sign with the league. Currently Chivas USA has the top spot in that order and there is no question in my mind that they could use a keeper like Hahnemann. While Dan Kennedy has done well for them as of late it would be hard to pass up a chance to get someone that could easily win games for you in goal like Hahnemann.

After Chivas in the order is Philadelphia, Houston, and Toronto.

Of course the most likely destination for him would be Seattle. Hahnemann already said on Twitter that he would like to talk to Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid. Of course Seattle would have to do a lot to move up in the Allocation order to get him, plus they’d have to do some major talking to get him to take a few months off before joining the club. After all they still have Kasey Keller for the rest of the year, and he’s pretty good ya know?

Rogers Next To Go In Columbus?

You know on Saturday I saw this tweet and really didn’t think too much of it. I blame my busy day at Pizza Hut Park on brushing it aside and leaving it to no comment but it turns out that tweet (and probably a few other things not being reported) are likely causing the Columbus Crew to trade midfielder Robbie Rogers.

Yup, according to SBI, the Crew are seeking a trade partner for Rogers. Rogers re-tweeted that comment made after not making the starting lineup against D.C. United last Saturday at RFK Stadium. Crew head coach Robert Warzycha has tried to downplay the situation, stating that Dilly Duka had beaten out Rogers for the starting role against United.

SBI didn’t have any details on a trade for Rogers but I’m sure a couple teams will be lining up for the young left winger. I could see maybe FC Dallas, New England, or maybe Chivas or Portland.

I have a feeling this is just the start of some stories that could come out of Columbus about Rogers and the club. Something tells me players are respecting Warzycha and his management style, which is leading them to do things like this. Columbus didn’t look great in week one against D.C. but they didn’t look terrible either. Rogers is a guy that they have to lean on this season for offense and even for some leadership.

What do you make of this news out of Columbus? Are things this bad that the few veteran players left over from last year are upset enough to find their ways out?

RSL Inks First Home Grown Player

I mentioned earlier in my Western Conference preview how I loved the way Real Salt Lake handles their business. Today, they took one step further in that as they signed their first Home Grown player, 18-year old Donny Toia.

The left-footed midfielder will have to battle his way into the first team discussion considering how deep RSL is here, but given the return of the Reserve League he will have no problem finding playing time.

“I think it’s critical that we not put big expectations on players that are this young,” said general manager Garth Lagerwey. “These are players that are multiple years away from contributing to our team.”

“He’s so young – as Luis [Gil] was when he started – we’ve got to see how he fits in with the group, and see where he projects over time.”

Toia was a member of RSL’s academy in Arizona for two years before heading off to Pima College in Tuscon. Last fall he racked up 14 goals and six assists in 18 games.

RSL becomes the 14th club to sign a HGP. Now only Seattle, Portland, San Jose and Columbus are left without one on their rosters.

Dellacamera Moves To FSC

Fox Soccer Channel finally has a lead broadcaster that I can side with. J.P. Dellacamera is said to have made the jump from his gig at ESPN to FSC for the upcoming MLS season. Philly.com’s Jonathan Tannenwald first broke the news last night. Dellacamera will remain the lead broadcaster for the Philadelphia Union’s home matches this season as well.

Dellacamera will only work FSC’s Friday games, not its Saturday games, so that he can remain the play-by-play voice for the Philadelphia Union on its local broadcasts. I was told by a team spokesperson today that the club has not yet decided who the color analyst will be this season.

The report also says ESPN will make a decision on their soccer broadcast team in the coming weeks. My guess is ESPN is moving completely over to Ian Darke for their soccer broadcasts, given the time he’s already gotten on US National team games in recent months. Of course this means that Darke has to move across the pond permanently here. ESPN could go another direction to someone like Max Bretos, a move I really hope they stay clear from as I believe he is much better suited for a studio position rather than a play-by-play job.

What this means for FSC is that they finally get a quality broadcaster in my opinion to call their MLS games.

The Vegas Stadium Dream

Good gravy, now that is some stadium porn. Wow. You have to give some credit where it is due, when people dream big out in the desert, they really do dream big. This insane, $1.6 billion, yes billion, price tag for a sports complex is designed to attract a MLB team, a NBA team, a NFL team, and even a MLS team.

The article linked above admits that Major League Soccer is the most likely candidate for playing in the big stadium shown in these images.

The official proposal (.pdf) for the multi-facility Las Vegas National Sports Center is rather impressive. Give it a read if you have some time.

I’ve talked recently about Vegas and their potential MLS dream. According to the article, the price tag for the complex also includes costs to buy a team. Now, they mention a NBA team in that reference, so I’d imagine they’ve also taken in account for a MLS expansion price tag. If they want to get down to cutting some of this price tag down a MLS expansion fee would be so much cheaper than courting a NBA team for instance (they say the price includes costs to spend $500 million for a NBA team!).

Okay, enough talk, time for some more stadium photo love.

Red Bulls Fire Two Assistants

This is a rather odd time to fire someone but according to various reports (Soccer Insider), the New York Red Bulls have fired two assistant coaches today, including once interm head coach Richie Williams.

Both Williams and Des McAleenan were sent packing today. Some reports according to Steve Goff cite repeated rules violations, while another report cites punctuality.

The firing of Williams is more surprising here as he’s always been listed as a top assistant in Major League Soccer and has been with the club for 11 years. My gut feeling is the club will cite some lame excuse here for these two rather than this being a real big deal. You have to think that Williams will land someone fairly soon as he was in line for many head coaching positions. If I’m D.C. United or the LA Galaxy, I’m making room for him right now on the coaching staff, even if it is just as water boy.

As for what this means for the Red Bulls, who are left with just one assistant coach at the moment, I see this as a house clearing move by Hans Backe and Erik Solar. I don’t know if there was any in-house riff between them all but my first thought was this was a move for Backe to get more of the type of assistants in house that he wants. Williams was placed there when he took over so it seems to me that this is just a move to get someone else in.

I see this as a step back for the Red Bulls though, as Williams was someone players got behind. We’ll know soon enough whether or not this will make any impact on the club or not. The club will address the issue this evening according to the report.

MLS Releases 2011 Playoff Format and Schedule

It may not be perfect but I do believe this is an improvement. Major League Soccer (finally) announced their playoff structure and format today. As we knew from back in the fall 10 clubs would make the playoffs in 2011, two more than the eight clubs that had always made the post season dance.

Conferences remain but with a bit of a twist. The wild card play-in games add a decent twist to the playoffs and could give conference and Supporter’s Shield winners a bit of an edge for a change. It makes little sense in my mind though that they kept the conference semifinals to a two-game series while the rest of the playoff is single elimination.

Still the whole idea of a ten-club playoff format seems odd to me and the new wild-card format cheapens the regular season a good deal too.

Below is the format from the league.

Ten clubs will qualify for the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs:

  • The top three finishers in each conference, based on regular season points (six automatic berths)
  • The next best four clubs based on regular season points, irrespective of conference (four wild cards)
    • The four wild cards will play single elimination games against each other, with higher seeds hosting (1 vs. 4; 2 vs. 3). These play-in games are part of the MLS Cup Playoffs.
    • After the two play-in games conclude, the lowest remaining seed will face the Supporters’ Shield winner in the Conference Semifinals; the other will face the No. 1 seed in the opposite conference from the Supporters’ Shield winner.

The four Conference Semifinals will be decided by two-game aggregate series, with each club hosting one game. The two Conference Championships will be single games hosted by the higher seed. MLS Cup will again be a single championship match hosted at a predetermined site to be announced at a later date.

The 2011 MLS regular season concludes Oct. 23. The dates for the MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup will be announced at a later date.

Update: To get a better sense (if you can) as to what this will look like, here ya go:

2011 MLS Season Previews: Stories to Follow

Matt Pickens and Marvell Wynne look to prove that winning the MLS Cup was no fluke for the Colorado Rapids. (Getty Images)

We’re moving on in our 2011 Major League Soccer previews. So far we’ve taken a look at the five breakout players and the five Home Grown players to watch. Today I want to dive into some stories that are going to be worth following this season in MLS.

Some of these stories/questions are obvious to follow, while some others are interesting ones that I find could be worth picking up on before long. That is why I’m not doing just five like in the other previews.

1. Can Colorado Repeat?

Going into any year the big question is always, can the champion repeat? This year’s reigning champion is a first time winner that could struggle at times with the pressure if Gary Smith doesn’t keep the club on course. Now last year the Rapids were essentially the seventh best club in the league but were able to win the MLS Cup due to a nice hot streak late in the year (hmm, where have we seen that before?).

Smith has kept most of the MLS Cup winning roster the same but as added a couple decent pieces:

[one_half]Incoming:
Joseph Nane (trade with TFC), Sanna Nyassi (trade with VAN), Tyrone Marshall (Re-Entry Stage 2), Eddie Ababio* (SuperDraft #18), Michael Holody (free agent), Steven Emory (undrafted free agent)[/one_half]

[one_half_last]Outgoing:
Ross Schunk (waived), Julien Baudet (trade to SEA), Danny Earls (trade to SEA), Claudio López (option declined), Ciaran O’Brien (option declined), Peter Vagenas (option declined)
[/one_half_last]

You be the judge is getting rid of Earls and Baudet was the right move, while bringing in Nyassi, Nane and Marshall. I view some of their moves as positive ones but will they be enough to go through the CONCACAF Champions League later in the season.

2. Can RSL (or Columbus) win the CCL?

Boy, one thing I am certainly glad about is the fact that RSL and Columbus had to face one another in the quarterfinals in the CCL and now some other clubs respectively. Reason being was simple, the game was ugly and one that felt like a bad preseason game for the two clubs. I’m sure things will change in the return leg in Sandy, UT, but boy do they have a ways to go here.

Anyways, I still believe RSL will come out of this series and move on to the semifinal. They’ve made a lot of talk about how they want to win the CCL and move on to the FIFA World Club Cup. Bigger question is can they do it? And if they don’t can Columbus some how manage do get to the final and at least make MLS look decent against a Mexican side?

It’s all about gaining respect in our region, particularly with the Mexican sides for MLS. Winning this year’s tournament would go a long way in doing that for either of these two MLS teams. As a MLS fan we should all be rooting for whomever comes out of this series.

3. Will this be the year for LA and David Beckham to finally win it all?

Beckham hasn’t helped his club win a league title since he was in Spain back in 2007. I’m sure that is more time than he or LA wanted when he first came over to MLS a few years ago. It seems like it was just yesterday that he was on all the morning shows here in the States, talking about how he wanted to make MLS better and be an ambassador to the game and all that nonsense. Fast forward to right now and LA looks very dangerous as a club, much more so than the first time he stepped on the pitch with them.

It is pretty evident that LA boss Bruce Arena is throwing in all his chips for a title this season. With Beckham on board for what should be a full season (could it possibly be?), LA should easily be in the discussion for a MLS Cup trip in 2011. New additions like Juan Pablo Angel, Frankie Hejduk and even Chad Barrett should help out.

4. Can Kansas City handle that long road trip?

We’ve seen it time and time again, when a club is waiting for their new stadium to finish they go out on the road for a long road trip. So far, the clubs that have had to do it haven’t fared so well. Let’s take a short look back at all the clubs that had to “wait it out”.

  • The Columbus Crew had the most success with a 5-2-0 record to start 1999.
  • The LA Galaxy went winless in eight matches (0-4-4) in 2002.
  • The Chicago Fire did alright in 2006, going 2-3-4.

Other clubs like Philadelphia at least had a couple home games in other venues to break up their road trips.

But KC has 10 games on the road before they touch base at home for the first time. Yes 10 games! That’s crazy! They say they are good with it but I have a feeling it will take it’s toll on this club.

5. How will the Gold Cup and other FIFA dates shake up the league?

Thankfully MLS schedule at least a little around a couple FIFA dates this year. So we have that to be thankful for later on. However they were not able to schedule around this year’s Gold Cup, which shouldn’t be too much of a shock. They can only really do so much in terms of scheduling around events such as this anyways.

I do think MLS will have some impact in the Gold Cup but the impact of the Gold Cup itself on MLS won’t be as much as in year’s past. It all comes down to call-ups by national team managers and with the expanded rosters this year, I see the impact only coming down to affecting a couple clubs at the most. Teams will be able to use younger players in this situation, which isn’t the worst thing if they are some home grown talent waiting in the wings.

6. How many Designated Players will come this year?

This is always a story to follow in MLS now. DPs command a lot of attention for any club and I’d imagine we’ll see at least three or four sign with various clubs this season. Houston, New England, Dallas and Toronto all look like decent DP candidates. NY could surprise us and sign a third even though they’ve claimed they won’t just yet. Maybe we’ll see a surprise club like Portland or Colorado jump into the DP mix too.

7. Will the majority of clubs have Home Grown players signed by the end of the season?

We’re getting down to only a few clubs that have yet to sign any HGPs. RSL, San Jose, Seattle, Columbus, and Portland. To be fair Portland just started up so they’ll probably wait another year or so to sign one but as for the others I hope to see at least one for each.

8. Who’ll be the better expansion side, Portland or Vancouver?

As the league grows with expansion clubs, we are always curious to see if those expansion clubs made the right moves before their inaugural season. Portland on paper seems like the logical choice here to be the better club of the two newbies. Offensively they have a nice spark with Kenny Cooper, Darlington Nagbe, Ryan Pore, and Eddie Johnson. I think as long as they have a decent midfield game behing them they’ll be fine.

Vancouver seems interesting. I don’t know of another way to put it just yet as they’ll be tested early on in the west with this lineup. It seems they are taking the build from the back approach, which is fine by me. I just worry about who will actually score for them considering they won’t have their top draft pick Omar Salgado until later in the season.

Figuring out expansion clubs is a crapshoot really. Seattle was the exception to that a couple seasons ago. I know Portland and Vancouver tried to mirror their rival’s success as an expansion team but at the end of it all they are still that, an expansion team.
