Hyndman: We Must Protect Our Players

Are players getting proper protection from the MLS referees?

That is a widely debatable topic depending on which coach you are talking to and how his club did in the previous game. Some managers are quick to tell you that protection of key players is still fairly weak. Given how physical some matches have been lately in the league, it is hard to argue with them.

After FC Dallas beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 on Saturday, manager Schellas Hyndman, someone who is always quick to say that his players need more protection offered up his thoughts on how little players are getting protected.

“It is really difficult out there,” said Hyndman. “I think what you are starting to see is a lot of physical play. It is either going no calls. Or the physical plays are getting the calls with no cards. I guess the point is that the players are almost at a point where they are getting a little bit nervous of the physical play. There is no penalty to it. I think it is not just this game but is the way it has been going this year.”

The match ended with nearly 30 fouls combined between the two squads. Vancouver had a couple more as they edged out Dallas 15-12 on what ended up being a physical night. There were only two yellow cards shown on the night too. One to Nigel Reo-Coker and the other to George John.

What are are seeing is more referees pulling players aside to talk things over with them. Seeing fewer cards is nice but protecting players a bit more is the message here.

“It seems to be a lot of consoling,” said Hyndman. “Where referees are talking to players saying ‘okay I’ve had enough, don’t do it any more,’ what we need to do is protect players.”

It wasn’t just the number of fouls on David Ferreira that had Hyndman concerned.

“I don’t care if it is David (Ferreira). I don’t care if it is Camilo from Vancouver. They need to be protected,” said Hyndman.

Schellas Hyndman: Reserve League Needs Improvement

You could call this a “duh” comment but overall the theme of this quote from FC Dallas manager Schellas Hyndman is that the MLS Reserve League is good but still needs a whole lotta work.

He spoke recently with Steve Hunt of the Dallas Morning News about it. Hyndman was pretty blunt on honest about how the Reserve League could use more stand-alone games rather than those that butt up against a MLS league game.

He would know, his club has had to play two of those type of games.

“A lot of time, a lot of energy, a lot of expenses have gone into the reserve league and I think for me personally if you can do a stand-alone game instead of adding onto another game like we did that one here with Houston, we did it in Toronto, I think it’s really tough on the players,” Hyndman said.

“You’ve got players that are one, focusing on the first team. Some of them maybe get in. They have their pregame meal 3 ½ hours before the game. Now you go through a whole game only to turn around and play a reserve game. It’s an extremely long day and you’ve got to be careful because the whole intent of the reserve league is to make players better. I don’t know sometimes we don’t give them a chance to get better,” he said.

“We make it too hard and these are ongoing discussions, it’s not just me. It’s ongoing discussions of how can we make it work? How financially can we cut back on some expenses, then dates stadiums are available and so forth, so there’s a lot of things involved. I just know we’ve just had two in a row [right after the first team played] and it’s been pretty tough.”

I was around the club for one of those games, against Houston. The FC Dallas-Houston league game was early in the day with the reserve league game following it shortly after. For everyone involved it makes for a long, long day. Hyndman would probably normally watch most of his reserve league team play on a day when they aren’t following his league game. But given how he had to talk with his players after Kenny Cooper scored a thrilling game-winner, then talk to the press, and more than likely then meet with some fans, Hyndman ended up missing out on most of the reserve league game. Naturally, I’m sure he watched it all on tape.

Still, with all of this, the Reserve league is good but not great here. We haven’t yet begun to see the effects of the new USL deal for the league’s teams but so far this is likely an element that will have to change to improve the Reserve league.

Dominic Kinnear Shares His Thoughts On Players Diving

Woah nelly. Dominic Kinnear is not a happy camper.

Speaking to reporters after the emotional 3-2 loss to FC Dallas, Kinnear went on a long rant on his feelings about the match (thanks to Steve Davis of Pro Soccer Talk for giving me these quotes):

“I thought the first few minutes looked really good,” Kinnear said of his team. “And then a big guy out in the field threw himself to the ground and gets a free kick. And they got a goal out of it.

“I’ve watched this league for three weeks now and it saddens me that we have people who have no problem diving, and looking for fouls and then looking to the heavens. It’s a sickening epidemic that’s going on in our league and hopefully it cancels itself out here pretty soon. Because some teams play hard, some guys cheat. Sometimes the cheaters win. When you have guys that don’t even get looked at, don’t get touched, falling on the ground looking for fouls, it makes me want to throw up.

“Hopefully, the players look at themselves and realize that they are cheaters, first, and putting the game into total disrespect. And hopefully that’s something that we, as coaches and players and as a league, can stop. Because it makes me not want to watch the game. And I can understand why people don’t want to watch when [players] do that stuff.”

Yeah.

Man I hate the fact that these two sides only play one a year. Darn unbalanced schedule.

And Houston Responds To Dallas

I love these two clubs. I really do. Their marketing departments are creative and willing to go all out for this rivalry. Dallas filed this first shot earlier in the week, and yesterday Houston came back with this response. Brilliant.

FC Dallas Wants A Roof Over Their Heads

One of the biggest complaints I hear from folks in the Dallas market about FC Dallas Stadium is the lack of shade. Sure if you sit on the west side of the stadium, most nights you are covered in some respects. But the south and east gates put you squarely in the sunlight and on hot summer days, that can be a pain.

Believe it or not Dallas actually had plans to have some cover over the stands back when the stadium was in development stages. Somehow the money didn’t get raised for it or it just got scrapped from the plans. But now Dan Hunt, the new face of the front office in Dallas is wanting to make some changes, the biggest potentially being a roof over some fans heads.

“We talk about player sales and some of the initiative is to spend the money back within the organization not for you just to pocket,” said Hunt. “I would love for this to happen. I’ve already made the pitch to my family and they’ve said let’s see where we come out on player transfers, but I want to constantly improve the stadium. My father did such a good job at taking care of our stadiums. This stadium still looks like it’s brand new, it really does. I would like to add a roof structure to some part of the stadium and I’ve made the pitch for our fans to my family and they’ve said we will consider it as we look at transfers and how we do revenue wise.”

2013 MLS Season Preview: Western Conference

Earlier in the day I predicted how I thought the Eastern Conference would be in the new season.

Time now to examine the Western Conference for the 2013 MLS season.

To me the West is a bit of an interesting group of teams. Top to bottom I think they are still as deep as they have been these last couple of seasons but I do see a bit of a changing of the guard going on here. Teams we know will be good may not be as good as we’ve seen while others may surprise us.

2013 MLS Season Preview: Offseason Winners and Losers

Sporting improved this offseason. (Rob Foldy-USA TODAY Sports)

Each year I’ve tried to come up with some new way to preview the new season. The last couple of years it was doing positional rankings. While those were a comment goldmine for the most part, they took forever to write up. I didn’t have the luxury of that kind of time this preseason to do that. So, some shorter kinds of preview posts have been coming out.

View all 2013 season preview material here.

So far we’ve looked at homegrown players, newcomers and each MLS squad. Today I wanted to take a quick look at three clubs that I believe knocked it out of the part this offseason in preparation for the new year. On the flip side of that I will also look at four that struggled to really improve in the offseason.

Narrowing the two lists down to just four wasn’t easy. For the top groups it mainly came down to the little additions that I like more than the big ones. Items not actually seen in a transaction listing. On the other hand, the teams that I wasn’t thrilled about going into the offseason came down to moves that just made me scratch my head a bit or the lack of moves.  Continue Reading →

2013 MLS Season Preview: Homegrown Talent

Each year Major League Soccer is growing not just on and off the field but in how they grow their own talent. Academies are getting to the point where they are producing quality talent each season soon enough MLS teams will be able to take full advantage of a younger player in their every day lineup.

We’ve seen some success so far in the Homegrown movement. Andy Najar is the obvious best example. In his rookie season with D.C. United, the Honduran midfielder earned the league’s Rookie of the Year award. He was the first Homegrown to win the award and to this day remains the only one to as well. Najar was also recently the first Homegrown player to get transferred overseas.

This winter several MLS squads made Homegrown signings. Dallas, Columbus and New York each signed a couple of their own in hopes that they have the next best young start.

So who are these Homegrown players? Here is a good list of who you should be expecting to get some playing time in 2013. Continue Reading →
