Giving Grades: How First and Second Year MLS Bosses Stack Up

It seems as though with each passing season in Major League Soccer we get a new crop of coaches in the league. Last year we got a couple new coaches and this season was no different with five new managers roaming the sidelines.

After seven weeks I feel as though we know a greater deal about each coach. Some are doing very well while others are still navigating the tricky and difficult MLS waters.

Typically at this time of the year we can begin to see a coaching hot seat forming and while I may get to that soon, I felt it was better to take a step back and see how the newcomers were fairing. Here is how I see them all doing so far this season with the sophomore coaches included as well.

Time-Lapse Video Of Dick’s Sporting Goods Park Last Weekend

Man, I have nothing but respect to the grounds crew at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Colorado. Hat tip to those folks who made it possible for the Rapids to kickoff their home opener this weekend despite all the snow in the Denver area over the weekend. Crazy.

Altitude Clearly Needs To Go

I think the graphic above says it all. Altitude, the broadcasting group that does the games for the Colorado Rapids may possibly be the worst in MLS. Listening to the game was brutal yesterday and I won’t even get into that but this starting XI graphic clearly shows how little someone cares about their job.

Seriously. Three keepers? Watch the highlights too – when that graphic appears on screen things get fun – Marcelo Balboa is speechless. Which may not be a bad thing.

Hat tip to SBNation.com site The Burgundy Wave for posting this. They cleverly wrote that Altitude was drunk when doing this, I think its pretty possible that they were.

Danny Mwanga Traded To Colorado

Danny Mwanga is on the move yet again.

The former number one overall draft pick in 2010 is headed to his third MLS club. The Portland Timbers have acquired a first-round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for Mwanga.

The move opens the door for the Timbers to sign another striker too while it gives the Rapids some insurance while Edson Buddle is recovering from some knee issues.

Crazy to think that Mwanga is on the move again but honestly his time in Portland never really amounted to much. At a higher price than some players, he was bound to be on the trading block with all the moves that the Timbers were making this year. On the flip side, Colorado could be a good landing spot for him in the end as he could fit in to Oscar Pareja’s system better than he would have in Caleb Porter’s.

What do you make of this deal?

2013 MLS Season Preview: Western Conference

Could this be the year that Sigi Schmid and Seattle really celebrate? (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

Earlier in the day I predicted how I thought the Eastern Conference would be in the new season.

Time now to examine the Western Conference for the 2013 MLS season.

To me the West is a bit of an interesting group of teams. Top to bottom I think they are still as deep as they have been these last couple of seasons but I do see a bit of a changing of the guard going on here. Teams we know will be good may not be as good as we’ve seen while others may surprise us.

2013 MLS Season Preview: Offseason Winners and Losers

Sporting improved this offseason. (Rob Foldy-USA TODAY Sports)

Each year I’ve tried to come up with some new way to preview the new season. The last couple of years it was doing positional rankings. While those were a comment goldmine for the most part, they took forever to write up. I didn’t have the luxury of that kind of time this preseason to do that. So, some shorter kinds of preview posts have been coming out.

View all 2013 season preview material here.

So far we’ve looked at homegrown players, newcomers and each MLS squad. Today I wanted to take a quick look at three clubs that I believe knocked it out of the part this offseason in preparation for the new year. On the flip side of that I will also look at four that struggled to really improve in the offseason.

Narrowing the two lists down to just four wasn’t easy. For the top groups it mainly came down to the little additions that I like more than the big ones. Items not actually seen in a transaction listing. On the other hand, the teams that I wasn’t thrilled about going into the offseason came down to moves that just made me scratch my head a bit or the lack of moves.  Continue Reading →

Colorado Rapids Unveil New Jerseys

Yesterday was the start of MLS’s new Jersey Week. Several clubs unveiled new jerseys and while the Houston Dynamo and New York Red Bulls had small updates to their kits, it was the Colorado Rapids that knocked their new kits out of the park.

namesThe primary is the first in MLS history to feature the names of each of the club’s season-ticket holders, while the design of the alternate kit is inspired by the Colorado state flag.

Yes, you read that correctly. If you are a season ticket holder for the Rapids, your name appears on the kit. How cool is that?

“The great thing about the Colorado primary jersey is that it has all 1,451 season ticket-holder names in the jersey,” said Mike Walker, adidas product manager. “Those hoops are made up of all of those names.” Continue Reading →

2013 MLS Season Preview: Colorado Rapids

We’re sticking to the Western Conference again today with the next round of season previews. Today we have a team that has made a ton of moves on and off the field this winter, the Colorado Rapids.

Just like is previous season for the Rapids, 2012 was a year of inconsistency and injuries. New coach Oscar Pareja never got his main 11 on the field for more than a game or two all season long. By the end of it all the club decided to blow things up a good bit for the 2013 season. Continue Reading →

Rapids Win Weighted Lottery On Forward Charles Eloundou

The Colorado Rapids have acquired forward Charles Eloundou, an 18-year-old attacking player and member of the Cameroonian National Team, in a special lottery held at Major League Soccer headquarters on Friday morning.

Eloundou, currently with Cameroon ahead of their friendly match against Tanzania on February 6, will join the Rapids in the coming weeks.

There is said to be some high hopes for this young striker. Eloundou was a star for the Cameroon U-20 National Team in 2012, scoring eight goals in seven matches during U-20 African Nations Cup qualifying. Those performances led him to be included with the full Cameroonian National Team for the Nehru Cup in India, where he played four matches.

Eloundou was signed last week by Major League Soccer on a one-year loan with an option to buy from AS Fortuna in Cameroon. After being unable to secure a visa before the MLS Combine and SuperDraft, he was made eligible for MLS clubs in a special lottery, which the Rapids won over Real Salt Lake and D.C. United.

Colorado is now ineligible for any future weighted lotteries during the 2013 season. They join Portland (Mobi Fehr) and Toronto (Gale Agbossoumonde) as other teams in that boat.

What’s Lacking: Chivas USA and Colorado Preseason Look

Colorado and Chivas still have holes to fill and questions to answer. (Getty Images)

I had every intention of starting the Wester Conference preseason look ins yesterday but things got away from me with the MLS-USL announcement.

Again, I am going through each of the 19 MLS clubs, two at a time, to look at what items are missing as each team is beginning their preseason camps this week.

So far I’ve done the entire Eastern Conference: the Chicago Fire and Columbus CrewD.C. United and the Houston Dynamo, the Montreal Impact and the New England Revolution, the New York Red Bulls and the Philadelphia Union, and Sporting KC and Toronto FC.

Today we’ll kick off the Western nine with Chivas and Colorado.

Chivas USA

- How long will the make-over take? We know they want to be more of a Mexican-American team than just an American team run by Mexicans. What ever it may really be, Chivas is making an effort to be more true to their core values with their new head coach Jose Luis Sanchez Solá. Nick LaBrocca is already gone and now Dan Kennedy and Shalrie Joseph appear to be next. But who is lining up to snag these two veterans?

- Lack of leadership. One thing about a club makeover is that it usually drives out veteran players. For Chivas this team is going to look different on day one in 2013 but who will step up and guide this team? They may have dumped a ton of salary for this year but so far you have to wonder what it will really bring.

- Forward thinking. One thing that the Goats struggled in a big way in 2012 was in the scoring department. Looking at their roster right now, the gaps up front are massive and could be even bigger should Juan Agudelo bolt for Europe.

Colorado Rapids

- 4-3-3 ready? We know this is the way Oscar Pareja wanted to go in year one but injuries and personnel kept him from doing what he truly wanted to do in Denver. He has the offensive parts to potentially switch with rookie Deshorn Brown, newcomers Edson Buddle and the return of Nick LaBrocca. But is that midfield set enough to handle this move? All depends on the health of one man.

- Who’s in line to back up Pablo Mastroeni? This may be a bigger ticket item than anything else for the Rapids. Mastroeni is said to be coming back but without Jeff Larentowicz in a Rapids uniform in 2013 (he got traded to Chicago), I question whether or not the Rapids have a solid backup in place. Nathan Sturgis, maybe. Dillon Powers, he could be but I doubt it right away.
