MLS on Chivas USA

Well the league has been keeping tabs on blogs and social media today. They’ve released a statement regarding Chivas USA and it is a doozy.

“Major League Soccer is aware of recent media speculation concerning Chivas USA,” read a statement from the league issued on Friday. “Such speculation is completely unfounded and untrue. MLS is fully supportive of the current owners of Chivas USA and has never considered taking over the club or moving it.”

It isn’t like the league is going to come right out and say, “Yep, we’re taking over this club tomorrow and a new potential owner will be in talks next week.” No, they’ll play it close to the chest like they always do and when the time comes, they’ll release another statement that will be filled with regret for seeing an owner go and blah, blah, blah.

That entire statement sounds like a “vote of confidence” that owners give a coach when he is on the hot seat too. Not to mention they didn’t come right out and say they are making an effort to keep the club in LA or anything like that.

This story isn’t at all over. Not by a long shot.

MLS Expansion: Beckham, Chivas and More

Kind feel bad for these guys now. (Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports)

Kind feel bad for these guys now. (Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports)

I haven’t hopped on the MLS Expansion train in a few weeks so here it goes.

So let’s do a little recap shall we?

Orlando:

The bill in Florida for stadium money fell through a couple weeks ago. It wasn’t something that was absolutely vital for the expansion plans of this group but it certainly slowed the progress down.

Orlando City is still pushing for a stadium and will more than likely get it. My bet is that it just take a tad longer than they wanted it to in the end. Before, they would have had shovels in the ground this year but now I’m not so certain that happens.

New York:

Everything is still pushing forward as far as this one is concerned. MLS still states NY is a priority for club number 20. No new word on Manchester City’s owners being the new owners of this club yet though. We’re still in that four-to-six week period though on the stadium news and everything else it seems.

Now for some new stuff that will certainly make this fun.

David Beckham’s retirement:

Okay, we’ve always known that Becks would be able to own a MLS team or be an investor in one someday. Given his retirement from the game we can easily expect those MLS-Beckham-Expansion talks to really heat up soon. His contractual rights from his first MLS contract allow him to invest and operate an expansion side for $25 million. Given how the last expansion club (Montreal) was in the neighborhood of $40 million, you can figure he’ll exercise those rights. He wants to, and other groups will want to line up with him on it since there will be a bit of a discount involved.

The big question is where will he land with a club? Miami? Orlando even? Atlanta? Somewhere else?

We know it won’t be New York, that has always been the case from day one according to his contract.

Chivas USA pending sale?:

Naturally MLS will deny anything from this situation in Southern California but it looks like Chivas USA may be gone sometime soon in the form of either relocation, new owners, re-branding or all of the above.

MLS desperately needs to address the Red-and-White’s situation, but it must do so carefully. It is all just a matter of time before investor/operator Jorge Vergara dumps this sinking ship in LA. He already has his Mexican team for sale and we know that it is Carlos Slim, one of the world’s richest dudes, that is lined up to buy. The thing is, Slim doesn’t want the MLS outfit. Nor should he.

I’ve been hearing plenty on this and a couple of my sources say that should a sale go through on Chivas USA, they’ll be relocated. It all comes down to who would buy the team though. MLS will likely assume the ownership of the team and could even do so very soon. From there they’ll be on the look for potential buyers.

Where would they go if they get relocated out of LA? A shortlist from my sources include: Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Atlanta, Nashville and Charlotte. But don’t sleep on San Antonio or Minnesota either.

Lastly, there is Sacramento. That’s my dark horse candidate for you all. They’ve been making real strides in that city to get soccer going on the lower levels (new team starts up next year I believe). Nothing is definite on that one but just a small hunch.

I know there are talks that relocation could happen but league sources has told me before that they are committed to making a second club in LA work no matter what. I’ve been told many times before, the league does not want to relocate a club unless it is the only option.

I’ve always been vocal on relocation of this franchise. I’ve stated before that I don’t like the idea of the league losing their second club in LA but the more we get into this the more it looks like they will. Just too many cities out there that want a MLS team and that will do a better job with it than what Chivas USA has been able to do over these last few years.

Chivas Snags A Farfan Twin From Philly

Well Jose Luis Sanchez Solá, or El Chelis at least got one of his guys. Tuesday afternoon Chivas USA announced the trade of Gabriel Farfran from the Philadelphia Union in exchange for allocation money and a first round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

Yeah. Money and a pick for arguably the lesser of the two Farfan twins. Consider this that Chivas only got allocation money from New England for Juan Agudelo and that makes this even more fun. Agudelo is worth only allocation while G. Garfan costs a first round pick (possibly a high one at this rate) and money.

Oh Chivas, you make it too easy to mock you sometimes. Still, uh, good pickup though.

Good job by Philadelphia to get plenty out of this as you know they’ll draft pretty well come next January with that pick.

Juan Agudelo Traded To New England

You read that correctly. Chivas USA has traded forward Juan Agudelo to the New England Revolution on Tuesday in exchange for allocation money.

He made 20 starts in 26 appearances for the Rebaño Angelino, recording five goals and four assists.  So far this year, he’s made six appearances, scoring two goals and adding one assist.

I must say this deal kind of came out of no where. It is interesting to see that Chivas was so quick to get rid of Agudelo, not even a year after trading for him from New York. Obviously Chivas USA is lining up some sort of forward signing that is more in line with their Mexican-American path that they are on this season.

For New England, Agudelo fills a big need that they have up front. Whether or not he fits in with this club remains to be seen but this is a good move for both the player and the club. New England needs a go-to striker and Agudelo has shown at times that he can be that kind of player. It all depends on if he wants to be in New England for the long haul.

What do you make of this move?

Report: Jorge Vergara Set To Sell Chivas?

This could be a big, big deal for Major League Soccer if it comes true.

Goal.com is reporting this morning that Chivas USA owner Jorge Vergara is prepared to sell Club Deportivo Guadalajara, Chivas USA and the Estadio Omnilife to Carlos Slim for the big price tag of $700 million.

Vergara is negotiating the sale of Chivas to the world’s richest person, Carlos Slim, according to Tuesday’s Record newspaper.

The outlet writes that both parties have sat down for talks and that those talks have, so far, been fruitful.

“It is closer to being sealed that falling through,” explains the publication, citing information gathered from a source “close to the negotiations.”

Slim, whose company America Movil already has a stake in Pachuca, Leon and Estudiantes Tecos, to claim one of Mexican soccer’s two most popular teams.

Vergara bought CD Chivas back in 2002 and most recently bought the full ownership of the American club from Angelica Fuentes.

This would be a very big deal should it happen for MLS. No word yet on what Slim would do with the MLS side but one has to think having a rich man like Slim as an owner could certainly help the club’s chances at getting a new stadium or even relocate to a location that would work for them. Lots of possibilities out there for this should it happen.

Giving Grades: How First and Second Year MLS Bosses Stack Up

It seems as though with each passing season in Major League Soccer we get a new crop of coaches in the league. Last year we got a couple new coaches and this season was no different with five new managers roaming the sidelines.

After seven weeks I feel as though we know a greater deal about each coach. Some are doing very well while others are still navigating the tricky and difficult MLS waters.

Typically at this time of the year we can begin to see a coaching hot seat forming and while I may get to that soon, I felt it was better to take a step back and see how the newcomers were fairing. Here is how I see them all doing so far this season with the sophomore coaches included as well.

2013 MLS Season, Week 4: Player Of The Week

Well, for the first time this season, my top vote didn’t end up winning the MLS Player of the Week. Instead the guy who got my second place vote did. Chivas USA forward Juan Agudelo scored a goal and slotted an assist on the 4-1 win over the Chicago Fire on Sunday earned the Week 4 POW.

Agudelo got 10 of the 28 votes from the NASR. This week the votes were fairly split after Agudelo as there wasn’t a clear cut winner like in weeks past.

Montreal’s Patrice Bernier was second with five with Agudelo’s teammate Mejia receiving four. Andy Gruenebaum (Columbus) and Jackson (Dallas) each received three votes.

Here are the highlights from the Chivas-Chicago game.

Garber On Chivas USA: Needs Better Execution

Patience and better execution. Those were the two resounding comments that MLS Commissioner Don Garber stated when asked over the weekend during his four-city tour about Chivas USA.

Garber addressed the topic more in depth on Sunday in Los Angeles, telling the local media there that the league has begun to intervene to help the club improve its brand awareness in Southern California.

“What I would encourage everyone to have is a bit of patience,” Garber said at halftime of the LA Galaxy’s 4-0 win over the Chicago Fire. “They have an idea, they have a plan. We’re hopeful that plan will be successfully executed. I think they need to do better in the execution.

“They need to put some real good resources on the administrative side, and get really focused,” he added. “The league has been working with them – one of our club services guys has been working with them to try and help them on the ticketing side, and help them understand some of the best practices going on with our other clubs.” Continue Reading →

2013 MLS Season Preview: Western Conference

Could this be the year that Sigi Schmid and Seattle really celebrate? (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

Earlier in the day I predicted how I thought the Eastern Conference would be in the new season.

Time now to examine the Western Conference for the 2013 MLS season.

To me the West is a bit of an interesting group of teams. Top to bottom I think they are still as deep as they have been these last couple of seasons but I do see a bit of a changing of the guard going on here. Teams we know will be good may not be as good as we’ve seen while others may surprise us.

2013 MLS Season Preview: Offseason Winners and Losers

Sporting improved this offseason. (Rob Foldy-USA TODAY Sports)

Sporting improved this offseason. (Rob Foldy-USA TODAY Sports)

Each year I’ve tried to come up with some new way to preview the new season. The last couple of years it was doing positional rankings. While those were a comment goldmine for the most part, they took forever to write up. I didn’t have the luxury of that kind of time this preseason to do that. So, some shorter kinds of preview posts have been coming out.

View all 2013 season preview material here.

So far we’ve looked at homegrown players, newcomers and each MLS squad. Today I wanted to take a quick look at three clubs that I believe knocked it out of the part this offseason in preparation for the new year. On the flip side of that I will also look at four that struggled to really improve in the offseason.

Narrowing the two lists down to just four wasn’t easy. For the top groups it mainly came down to the little additions that I like more than the big ones. Items not actually seen in a transaction listing. On the other hand, the teams that I wasn’t thrilled about going into the offseason came down to moves that just made me scratch my head a bit or the lack of moves.  Continue Reading →
