Rogers: “I don’t want to play in Chicago”

Last week it seemed as though all the talks were about Robbie Rogers coming back to play after his retirement was announced just a couple months ago.

As most know, Rogers’ MLS rights are held by the Chicago Fire thanks to a pre-season trade that sent those rights from Columbus to the Windy City. Rogers had joked back how he was ‘rightsless’ in MLS back at the time of the trade when he was still living in England. Now it appears he wants nothing to do with the Fire.

“I don’t want to go to Chicago,” Rogers told the Soccer Today podcast. ”I think if it comes down to, ‘You can only play in Chicago,’ then I probably won’t go back. I need to do it somewhere where I’m totally 100 percent comfortable so … I would most likely do it closest to my family.”

Closer to his family ultimately means he will be going to LA to play with the LA Galaxy. That should come to no shock to anyone here. He did sound pretty positive in the interview that he would be back and given how MLS works, you know a deal with be struck between the Galaxy and the Fire for Rogers’ rights. The question will come down to it, what will the Fire be asking and what will the Galaxy be willing to give up?

My gut tells me a deal will pan out and it won’t involve any players. Likely a little allocation and a draft pick of some sort. Probably a conditional one.

2013 MLS Season Preview: Eastern Conference

Sporting KC hopes to keep their hold on the Eastern Conference in 2013.

Sporting KC hopes to keep their hold on the Eastern Conference in 2013.

It is time to get down to it. I’ve already gone through each MLS side, along with several other previews. But now it is time to get down to where I think things will shake out once the dust settles later this year.

Yes, I am talking predictions folks.

First up is the Eastern Conference.

Right now I see the Eastern Conference as a pretty deep group of clubs. I feel confident that it could end up being a eight team race for the long haul of the season. Yes, eight teams folks. I think the top part of the conference is pretty well stacked but the middle group from about 3-8 is closer than some might think.  Continue Reading →

Today I begin a long, long series of posts that will preview the 2013 MLS Season. I have a team-by-team preview lined up along with several other articles that will hopefully get everyone ready for the upcoming season. Some of the articles include a look at the top movers this offseason to who had possibly the worst offseason.

I wanted to kick this off today with a look at the Chicago Fire. For those curious I am going alphabetical in this team-by-team look. I know I have already done similar and slightly shorter posts on each club already this season, I mainly wanted to focus on a higher level on each squad.

So here we go… Continue Reading →

More on the Oduro-Duke Swap

This has been a trade in the works for weeks now. Back at the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, the Chicago Fire and the Columbus Crew were expected to make a deal but never seemed to work out all of the details. That is until now, though it isn’t official yet, it appears that both sides have come to an agreement.

The Fire will send forward Dominic Oduro to the Crew in exchange for midfielder Dilly Duka and the player rights to midfielder Robbie Rogers. Yeah, you read that correctly, Duka and Rogers for Oduro.

The deal was just announced by the two clubs early Monday morning.  Continue Reading →

What’s Lacking – Chicago and Columbus Preseason Look

Chicago Fire v Columbus Crew

It is preseason time in Major League Soccer. The majority of the 19 MLS clubs are back in preseason mode today with the first practices of the new year under way.

I thought today would be a good time to begin looking at the clubs and what they are lacking going into the new season. I’m breaking it into two team pieces starting with the Chicago Fire and the Columbus Crew out of the Eastern Conference.

Chicago Fire

- A big time scorer. Sure they have Chris Rolfe and Dominic Oduro can be good in a pinch. But outside of that the Fire have some real question marks up front. They can’t rely on Rolfe to do it all as when they did late in 2012, the team fluttered down the stretch and were outed in the knockout stage of the playoffs by the Houston Dynamo. I don’t know if they need a DP-level scorer but they need someone that can bag at least 10-14 goals this season outside of what Rolfe scores.

- The midfield shape. I’m sure this will get sorted out in the coming weeks but with Joel Lindpere, Jeff Larentowicz, Logan Pause, and other guys in the midfield…what way does Frank Klopas shape this group? Also, knowing who plays where and what not will be key for this group. I’ll put it this way, the midfield is a make or break group for the Fire in 2013. They could be very good or very overrated.

Columbus Crew

- Depth in the back. I thought the Crew could have done better with their draft last week at getting deeper in the back. They got younger for sure this offseason but youth doesn’t always translate into quality depth right away.

- Time for the HGPs? Just like their Hunt Sports Group mates FC Dallas, the Crew made a big push on the HGP front to bring their club total up to five this winter. You have to wonder at what point are those five going to play a role for this club in 2013. Aaron Horton and Ben Speas have seen limited action while newcomers Wil Trapp and Chad Barsons hope to break that mold and see action in 2013.

- Scoring limited. After Federico Higuian, the Crew is limited in who can score up front for them. Yeah Jairo Arreita can score as well but he is more of a play maker than a scorer. The Crew need a partner for Higuain if they want to compete with the likes of Houston, Kansas City and D.C. United in the East.

Chicago Lands Larentowicz In Pre-Draft Deal

The deals are going to start flying here.

The Chicago Fire and the Colorado Rapids have struck a deal that will send veteran midfielder Jeff Larentowicz and the number 30 pick in tomorrow’s SuperDraft to the Fire in exchange for the No. 11 overall pick, a 2013 international roster slot and allocation money.

Larentowicz became expendable in a Rapids midfield that now features Martin Rivero, Jamie Castrillon and Hendry Thomas. The writing was on the wall the minute that the Rapids re-signed Henry earlier this winter.

The Rapids are aggressively making deals this week to improve their roster. They are also said to be trading with Toronto FC for either the top pick in the draft or the number three pick.

The deal is the latest major off-season trade for Chicago, which landed midfielder Joel Lindpere earlier this winter from the New York Red Bulls. They’ll have to take on a heftier contract as Larentowicz made right at $200k last year, with the likelihood of a good increase in salary going into this season (typical veteran deals see a certain percentage increase from season to season).

The move is a good one by the Fire but it doesn’t help the salary cap one bit. The Fire are also now out of the Fire round with this move and now only see a second round selection.

2012 MLS Cup Playoffs: Eastern Conference Preview

Everyone hopes to knock out Sporting KC, but who has the best shot? (Getty Images)

For the first time in what feels like ages, Major League Soccer’s post season is actually properly split between the Eastern and Western Conferences. No more cross over games, no more teams from Colorado winning the East, or New York winning the West.

The playoffs may not be perfect but I think this may be the most exciting playoffs to date in league history.

I’m going to do a two-part preview of the playoffs. Doing each conference seemed more reasonable than combining them into one larger post.

Time to start with the Eastern Conference – one of the most wide open conferences we’ve ever seen. Five quality teams that all have the ability to win it all this season. I will take you through each series and give you all a few predictions for each as well. Once the conference finals are set I’ll preview it out just like what you see below.  Continue Reading →

Dallas Gets Political For Hedges ROY Campaign

I love it when teams spend time around the end of the season to hype up one player (or two or three) for the end of the season awards. Chicago has already done so with Austin Berry, now FC Dallas throws their hats into the mix with a political based theme for Matt Hedges.

I love both campaigns.

Chicago did some stuff with cereal boxes a couple weeks ago and if I am Dallas, I go all out for Hedges and send out some nifty political buttons, stickers, the works. Go big or go home!

I’ll get into my rookie voting here soon. For those who care, it has been down to these two guys for a few weeks for me. I know I see Hedges on a weekly basis here in Dallas but the kid is talented. So is Berry, who has been absolutely great these last few months for the Fire.

What do you all make of these clubs going all out for their rookies? Think it will help in the voting?

Handicapping the Rookie Of The Year Race

Austin Berry has been flying high for the Fire this season. (Getty Images)

Programing note: …and we’re back. Yeah, I had to take yesterday completely off and I won’t apologize for it at all either. As some probably found out, yesterday was my wedding anniversary so there was little need for writing yesterday.

I wanted to finish this week with a look at this year’s Rookie of the Year race. I think we’ve seen a couple different versions of this race so far this season and just like a lot of other awards it will come down to the wire in the final weeks of the season.

Earlier in the year it seemed as though offense was moving the needle on the rookie race, guys like Nick DeLeon and Darren Mattocks were flying high and causing all sort of issues. Both have since cooled off and now the defenders in the rookie crop have taken charge.

Below are five rookies that I think still have a legitimate chance of winning this year’s Rookie of the Year award.  Continue Reading →

2012 MLS Playoff Race: Hot and Not

David Ferreira and FC Dallas are putting pressure on the rest of the Western Conference. (Getty Images)

A few weeks ago the MLS playoff races in both the Eastern and Western Conference looked rather boring. Both were just a five team race to determine which team was seeded where and no one from the outside was really threatening to crash the party.

As we enter the second half of August – or the first leg of the home stretch in the MLS season as I like to call it – both conference races are a little tighter at the top and are seeing teams from outside of the playoff zone creeping up to put pressure on those who are stumbling.

Each conference has a couple sides that are hot and some that are just plain not. Below are two teams from each side that I see having potential to crash the playoff party (or potentially more) this season and two that could crash out of the playoff mix all together. Continue Reading →
