Yes, I know it is extremely early to be doing a list like this but it’s Friday, I have a day off, and I say why not. Just after national signing day I thought it would be a good time to break out the college reports and see who was worth a look at for next year’s MLS SuperDraft.

The 2013 SuperDraft class was good but I already see the 2014 class as one that could be miles better. Of course a lot can and will change that between now and next January. The type of talent will also be a little different than it was in 2013, next year we’ll see more central defenders and attacking midfielders come out.

I will eventually get into some Homegrown players that will make an impact on next year’s draft as well but for now here are 14 players worth keeping an eye on this fall.  Continue Reading →

Projecting the 2013 Generation adidas Class

Walker Zimmerman appears to be a lock. (Furman Paladin Athletics)

It is that time of the year again. Time when we really dive into the SuperDraft talk around here now that the College Cup is over (hat tip to Indiana for claiming the crown this season).

I wanted to start off this week with an update on the Generation adidas class for this year. I’ve started gathering some of the potential targets out there from some of my sources and contacts throughout the league. A lot of what I have gathered so far is that this could be one of the smallest classes to date. With the emphasis around the league going towards the Home Grown Players – which we’ll definitely see more signed this month for 2013 – the GA pool will be taking a hit.

MLS is also taking a step back on handing out a lot of GA contracts like they have in years past. The last few classes have been fairly large with last years having nine, 2011 have 11 and 2010 having 13. The numbers just keep going down.

I’d be willing to bet that the HGP list of players signed this winter will be larger than the GA pool in this draft as well. It is just where the resources are going these days. The league and teams are putting more resources in the HGP area. MLS has realized that the last couple of years that they have been spending more than they should have on GA deals with many young players not living up to their potential. MLS is wanting to basically spend their money a little wiser on the GA deals from here on out according to one source.

With the College Cup wrapped up I’ve been told at least two players are almost locks for deals with a couple others up in the air.  Continue Reading →

College Cup Preview: Thoughts and Predictions

Two big semifinal games today followed by an even bigger final later this weekend. Gotta love the College Cup format as it showcases four really good teams with three big games.

Creighton tackles Indiana while Georgetown and Maryland square off. Four really talented teams folks and this is a three-game weekend that I am super excited for. There are plenty of MLS-ready players across these four clubs – while I’ll get more into that again next week as the SuperDraft talk really heats up – this will be a time to break down each match and give a prediction on who will win it all.

Creighton vs Indiana

How they got there: Indiana was the 16th seed in the tournament which meant at some point they would have to knock off the top seed – Notre Dame. As fate would have it, they did and it came in South Bend. After that they knocked off the defending champions UNC. That win ended UNC’s 40-game home unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory.

Creighton also had a tough road to go as they knocked off a good Washington team in the first round followed by ended Caleb Porter’s time in Akron. They punched their ticket to Hoover, AL, last weekend with a big 1-0 win over UConn with a late goal in the 89th minute.

Key player for Indiana: Eric Zavaleta. If you haven’t heard of this kid by now you need to pay attention. The sophomore forward has pretty much carried this team throughout the season and in this tournament. Creighton will have to force him out of the game with physical play and hope that he doesn’t find some late magic.

Key player for Creighton: Zach Barnes. The defensive midfielder will have the lovely task of dealing with Zavaleta. He should be up for it too. Most haven’t seen Barnes this season but he is the type of player that can control his space and keep a good attacker like Zavaleta at bay.

Final thoughts: Two very underrated teams in this matchup. Both bested some of the top teams in the country on their way to the final four. I think this one stays close and could even go into overtime. With each team being as hot as they are right now it is tough to go with one over the other.

Prediction: Indiana 2, Creighton 1

Georgetown vs Maryland

How they got there: Georgetown may have had a little tougher road to the final four than Maryland. They nearly got tripped up twice, first being in their opener against UNC Charlotte and the quarterfinal match against San Diego saw them have to come from behind.

Maryland on the other hand had little trouble getting to Hoover as they blew away a couple teams early before dominating Louisville last weekend 3-1.

Key player for Georgetown: Ian Christianson. I’ve mentioned him a few times on this blog as a HGP target for Chicago. Christianson is a good box-to-box kind of midfielder that will have to deal with the high-powered attack that Maryland has with John Stertzer and Patrick Mullins.

Key player for Maryland: Patrick Mullins. Another GA target, a speedy option up front for the Terps has done very well this season as a junior. He is a right-place-right-time kind of striker, something that lots of teams would kill to have up front.

Final thoughts: These two are close on the map to one another but don’t always get to play each other. Georgetown has been building to this moment for a couple years now and are finally reaping the rewards of good recruiting and scouting. Maryland is what we would expect out of them as they are back in the final four for the first time in a few years. Both teams are defensively sound so I would expect a tight game.

Prediction: Maryland 1, Georgetown 0

Indiana and Maryland for the College Cup final based on these predictions. A quick pick for that game goes to Maryland. Either way that will be a fantastic game.

2013 MLS SuperDraft: Home Grown Mini-Board

Can LA convince Gyasi Zardes to sign a HGP deal this year? (CSU Bakersfield Athletics – Mark Nessia)

Everyone loves the big boards that come out this time of the year. The MLS SuperDraft is less than two months away and while there is still a MLS Cup to be played this weekend, many teams are gearing up for the College Cup finals to take place the following week.

I fully intended to write this on Tuesday but got wrapped up in the expansion talk that it got pushed to today. Yesterday was a total wash for me as well due to the day job so here we go.

I felt like diving into the other side of the MLS SuperDraft, with a list of players that likely won’t be drafted at all. That is due to their ties with MLS clubs as potential home grown players. I think this will be the first years were we will see more HGPs signed outside of the draft than ever before. We’ve had a couple in the last two seasons but this year there will be more.

For more college soccer coverage I suggest heading over to TopDrawerSoccer.com (Travis Clark and JR Eskilson do fantastic work) or to the MLS on Campus section of MLS’s website (my good pal Daniel Robertson does that for MLS). Both know their stuff in regards to the college game and the draft.

So here is my (mini) Big Board of HGPs that could be in the MLS game next year. The other big board (if I even do one – Ha!) will come in a couple weeks.  Continue Reading →

2013 MLS SuperDraft Prospects: Forwards

Gyasi Zardes has ties to LA but could go overseas instead.

We are at the final list for the 2013 MLS SuperDraft prospects. Good timing too since Turkey day is tomorrow and I probably won’t be blogging a whole lot until next week. Next week I may start putting some of these players in more of an order or a board if you will. Not quite a Big Board but damn close to one.

Also, again the mock drafts won’t start appearing on here until the middle of next month or so. A little pre-Christmas gift for you all.

To recap, I’ve looked at the prospects for the keepers, defenders and midfielders. Today is all about the forwards.

One final note, as I always disclaim before I write up one of these posts on the SuperDraft. Don’t get attached to the order that these players are in and don’t get attached to the names on the list. A lot can happen between now and MLS Combine. Not to mention with the Home Grown Players out there these days, we won’t see some of these guys go through the draft as it is. Lastly, if you see a guy you think I missed, feel free to comment below. But again, with that, don’t automatically expect him to make the next list.

So here we go… Continue Reading →

2013 MLS SuperDraft Prospects: Midfielders

Scott Caldwell has progress very nicely at Akron. (Photo via Akron Athletics)

We’re nearly done with our early lists for the 2013 MLS SuperDraft prospects. Yesterday we tackled the defenders and last week we took a quick look at the few goalkeepers that may be available in January.

Today we’re going to move up the field a bit to examine the midfielders. The midfield and forward lists should be a tad longer, given how that is where most teams hope to get the most value in the draft.

Again, as I always disclaim before I write up one of these posts on the SuperDraft.

With that usual alert out of the way, let’s get down to business. Continue Reading →

2013 MLS SuperDraft Prospects: Defenders

London Woodberry is one of the best defensive prospects in the country. (UM Athletics/TJ Root)

This will hopefully be a busy week full of SuperDraft posts on here from me. The College Cup continues on this week as we move into the third round action. Some quality players with MLS dreams saw their Cup goals go away this past weekend with a few upsets across the board. If I get the time that I am hoping to this week I’ll go into some of those games.

But for now I am on the SuperDraft train talking the top defensive prospects. Last week I previewed some of the goalkeepers to keep an eye on going into January’s draft.

Again, as I always disclaim before I write up one of these posts on the SuperDraft.

There are a few defenders that could go early in the draft while some of these guys will be good late round selections.

London Woodberry (Maryland) - The senior defender is arguably one of the best in the country right now. He has ties to the FC Dallas system and will likely be a Home Grown product once the College Cup is over. Don’t be shocked if he sees plenty of time next year for Dallas. He is that ready.

Chad Barson (Akron) - Another senior defender that is tied to a MLS club, this time to the Columbus Crew (they have a really good academy system). He has been a key fixture for Caleb Porter for four seasons and more than likely Columbus will do the wise thing after this season and sign him up. Just like Woodberry, I’d expect to see plenty of him next season.

Walker Zimmerman (Furman) - The first Generation adidas prospect on this list and if he signs I’d expect him to be drafted in the top three. He is that good folks. He is big, strong and very athletic. Even at the age of 19, he has all the tools and ability to be a special player on the next level.

Eric Schoenle (West Virginia) - A guy that could have been a GA selection last year, will have to go through the Combine this season and hopes of getting a first or second round pick as a senior. He lead the Mountaineers in scoring this year with six goals from his center back spot. He still needs to add a little bulk to his size but he has all the tools to be a good defender in MLS.

Andrew Ferrell (Louisville) - Some are in love with this GA prospect, others seem to believe he’ll wait another year. Either what you spin it the kid is super athletic and could be a top 10 pick if he signs early. A natural CB, Ferrell has the tools to be a special player at the next level.

Joe Franco (Cal State Northridge) - I was only able to see one Northridge game this season but my focus was all on Franco. He is an outside back with loads of skill. He was the Big West Defender of the Year and is really an underrated kind of player for the draft. Highlight reels show him to be a consistent player and part of me sees a guy like Sean Franklin when I watched him earlier this year. Good at getting forward and just a solid defender.

Matt Wiet (UCLA) - Another Crew product here. Some believe it will come down to him and Barson for a HGP contract from Columbus, but I kind of see them snagging both young players here this winter. He has a good ability to win balls either in the air or on the ground. He is a smart player with good vision on the ball. He and Barson could be the future of their back line in Columbus if the Crew are wise about it.

Tommy Muller (Georgetown) - The Hoyas senior isn’t that big but his leadership ability and toughness make him a good selection here. I’ve been told that some scouts see him as another Michael Parkhurst type player, which isn’t a bad thing to be compared to.

Taylor Kemp (Maryland) - He was injured a bunch this season but being a natural left back is always worth talking about, seeing as how that is a tough position to find talent in MLS. I see him as a late sleeper in this draft and if his Combine is good enough someone smart will take him and be a big winner because of it.

Kyle Venter (New Mexico) - A three-year starter for the Lobos. He’s only a Junior so the GA status may be iffy on him unless MLS struggles to find their usual seven or so players. He could be on the outside looking in for that contract deal. He reads the game very well and has been a big reason why New Mexico is going deep into the College Cup.

2013 MLS SuperDraft Lists: Goalkeepers

Andre Blake could be the lone GA keeper in the bunch. (Photo via UConn Athletics)

I love this time of the year. Fall is in full swing, the weather is a little chillier and college soccer is coming to a close for the year. All of that means the SuperDraft is right around the corner, a time of year that I absolutely love as you all know by now.

This is the start of a few posts examining some potential players that could be coming into the SuperDraft next year. Some will be Generation adidas targets while others will be seniors finishing out their colligate careers.

Instead of a Big Draft Board or a Mock Draft at this time, I am going to go position-by-position, starting with the goal keepers. After Thanksgiving – probably a couple weeks into December once the College Cup wrap up for good -I’ll release my first Mock Draft.

Again, as I always disclaim before I write up one of these posts on the SuperDraft.

Time to get down to it, here are the top keepers I see coming out this year. Just as in the last couple of years, the keeper pool is a little light but this year has a couple guys that could push for a late pick or even a Supplemental pick.

David Meves (Akron) - This guy has enjoyed a remarkable season with the Zips. He has ties to the Chicago Fire academy so I’m not sure if the draft will be his route. He would be a solid backup choice (and a cheap one at that) for Sean Johnson. He had 16 shutouts this season as he helped lead the Zips in Caleb Porter’s final season in Akron.

Scott Goodwin (UNC) - Honestly, it seems like this guy has been in college with UNC for a decade now. His experience and leadership is what brings him big time value. He’s been in a ton of big game situations over the last three years and will have a chance to add to it this month in the College Cup.

Andre Blake (UConn) - Here is the lone Generation adidas pick in the list. Blake is certainly a keeper for the future here and one that has just a ton of upside and potential. He has the perfect keeper size at 6-foot-4 and once he adds a little bulk I think he’ll turn into a great keeper. The only knock on him is his decision making, which sometimes has lead him the wrong way. Still, saying that he is a raw talent that could be a very high draft pick if he signs early as a GA.

Luis Soffner (Indiana) - A four-year starter for the Hoosiers. This season alone he had 70 saves while conceding 16 goals. I think someone takes a flier on him late in the Supplemental draft just due to his leadership skills and his experience.

James Belshaw (Duke) - As good as he is, the Blue Devil has a international tag next to his name. That could hurt his stock in a big way. But let’s hope it doesn’t because he is one of the best senior keepers in the bunch. Belshaw has a lot of athletic ability that comes in handy on making a big save.

2012 College Cup Preview: Part 2

Maryland looks to have a decent shot at reaching the final four. (Photo via Maryland Athletics/TJ Root)

Time to move to the other side of the bracket today. Yesterday I examined the Notre Dame and UConn side of the bracket, today I’ll move over at look at what Maryland and Georgetown have to do to win their respective brackets.

For a full look at this year’s bracket, click here.

Bracket 3

Top seeds- (2) Maryland, (7) Marquette, (10) Louisville, (15) Wake Forest

Favorites - Maryland. It is all about Maryland.

Sleeper team - Coastal Carolina. Some how this team always seems to go under the radar but they have talent that will push teams around. Pedro Ribeiro is a solid player to watch from them as well, a guy that could be looking at raising his MLS SuperDraft stock.

Player to watch for - Patrick Mullins, Maryland. If you’ve seen this kid play at all this season you will understand why I single him out here. Some MLS teams hope he will go to the draft early as a Generation adidas player but even if he doesn’t, this kid has some serious talent that cannot be overlooked.

Best first round match –  Elon vs. Costal Carolina. Two underrated teams and honestly two teams that can probably upset Wake Forest in the second round.

Best potential match - Louisville vs. Maryland – The Cardinals are a tad underrated in my mind and I still believe they have the talent to go deep if they want to in this tournament. Marquette will push them around in a nice Big East match in the third round but should both Maryland and Louisville get to the quarterfinals of the tournament, it will be a game for the ages.

Path to Hoover –  It all depends on Maryland and what they do. They stumbled just once this season and down the stretch they began to run out of gas but I think they will turn it on again in the tournament. Just too much talent on that squad not to.  Continue Reading →
