I see that number in the headline and I am immediately impressed. To get 17,000-plus already reserved for a team that won’t set foot on a field in MLS until 2017 is flat out impressive.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting these figures that 6,000 founding members of the Atlanta club help make up this 17,500 number. Owner Arthur Blank is trying to fill his new NFL venue (which will be capped at 25,000 for MLS games), and so far his team is doing an excellent job.
With two years remaining before the inaugural 2017 season, Atlanta’s MLS team has a realistic shot at overtaking Seattle, which had a league-record 22,000 season tickets earmarked before its first season.
Orlando SC recently surpassed 10,000 season tickets. NYCFC surpassed that mark in October.
If anyone can catch and actually keep up with the likes of Seattle in this game, I will be truly impressed. Seattle has been the gold standard in MLS since their arrival but right now Atlanta is proving that they could easily become a soccer force in the southeast. Every person I’ve talked to from the Atlanta area that either lives there or has once lived there continues to agree on one thing, a MLS team will do very well in the Peach State capital.
