The last 12 months were certainly big in MLS. Here are a few of my top stories from the last year.

USL PRO expansion

Take a look at the US third division and you’ll see a lot of new faces coming into the fold in 2015. That is due to the partnership with MLS and the ever importance that MLS is putting on having a reserve league set up within the USL PRO. Right now only a couple teams in MLS are without affiliates or full fledge reserve teams of their own but all of that will change before the start of the season.

MLS expansion

Naturally, I continue on with the expansion thoughts as Orlando and NYCFC are set to join in 2015. But we also got to see the additions of LAFC and Atlanta for 2017 and then two more by 2020. I wouldn’t be shocked if MLS goes beyond 24 teams in 2020 to either 26 or 28 teams as more markets continue to look at MLS.

US at the World Cup

The summer was certainly fun with the World Cup this past year in Brazil. The USMNT did their part to get out of a massively tough group that saw them play eventual champions Germany, Portugal and their old nemesis Ghana.

Goodbye Chivas USA

The end of the Chivas USA era was also in 2014. The league’s failed experiment will draw some similarities with one of their newest clubs NYCFC but at the end of the day, we know that the LA market won’t be ignored with LAFC coming into the fold in 2017 with their slew of owners.

Galaxy cement their dynasty status

Three titles in four years. Once again Bruce Arena puts together a star-led group of players along with some young talent to a title.

Donovan’s farewell

Seeing Landon Donovan hang it up after this year was certainly surprising in some ways but to also see him go out as a champion was what you’d expect out of him.

Henry’s ride into the sunset

Thierry Henry also hung up his boots after this year as well. I’ll never forget meeting him in the Sporting KC locker room after the MLS All-Star Game in 2013. Such a class act.
