The 2014 World Cup is finally here. Tomorrow kicks off the first of many group stage games. Over the next day or two I’ll be making my group stage predictions. They’re all going to be fairly quick but feel free to add in your own to the comments below.

Group A

Brazil (4th in FIFA rankings) | Qualified as host nation | 67-15-15 all-time, five-time champions

Croatia (20th) | Second-place finish in UEFA Group A | 6-5-2 all-time

Mexico (19th) | Defeated New Zealand 9-3 in CONCACAF/Oceania playoff | 12-24-13 all-time

Cameroon (50th) | Defeated Tunisia 4-1 in CAF third round | 4-9-7 all-time

Predictions

Brazil vs Croatia – First game out of the gate. A lot of pressure on the home side to do well here. Croatia may be the one team in this group that won’t be fazed too much by the crowd but in the end Brazil wins this one. Brazil 3, Croatia 1

Mexico vs Cameroon – Mexico has to get off to a hot start here but I think Cameroon could trip them up. But Mexico finds a way to escape this game. Mexico 2, Cameroon 0

Brazil vs Mexico – The game of the group for sure here. Mexico had Brazil’s number in the Olympics a couple years ago in London but it won’t be the same here. Brazil 2, Mexico 1

Cameroon vs Croatia – Croatia plays a must-win game in this one against a tough African side. They’ll find a way to get by them, as they put pressure on the Mexicans. Croatia 2, Cameroon 1

Cameroon vs Brazil – The home side will already be planning their trip to the knockout round but I don’t expect them to sleep in this one. Brazil 3, Cameroon 0

Croatia vs Mexico – The game that will determine who goes through and who goes home. Some how Mexico always finds a way to get to the knockout round, they do it again here with a draw. Mexico 1, Croatia 1

Final Standings

Brazil – 9 points

Mexico – 4 points +1GD

Croatia – 4 points -1GD

Cameroon – 0 points
