We’re a week into the 2014 season and there are already lots of story lines to discuss. But time for the weekly Five Up, Three Down series as we look at who is hot around the league and who is dipping in performance.

Just a reminder, there is no specific order to either list, just a running tally in my head.

Five Up

Real Salt Lake – Why should I ever doubt this squad? Coaching change really did nothing to the on-the-field product. The team was organized as you would expect and that veteran leadership continues to be the best in the league.

Seattle Sounders – The Sounders looked solid in their season opener against the defending MLS Cup champions Sporting KC. I still think that had Clint Dempsey not gone to Fulham this winter, things would be a little better but overall this team is going to do well this season. Also, their Homegrown players are looking better and better.

Vancouver Whitecaps – Holy smokes. The Caps looked like possibly the most improved team to me over the weekend. The talent up front is certainly going to produce and if the right players can stay healthy for Carl Robinson, they could be very dangerous this season.

Houston Dynamo – This one may be more of a nod to Will Bruin. The men in orange looked well organized in the opening week. I wouldn’t be shocked if this team quietly dominates this season in the Eastern Conference. No CCL dates should help out in that.

Columbus Crew – One thing I may have to continue to remind myself this season is to not sleep on what Gregg Berhalter and company are attempting to do there in the Ohio capital.

Three Down

D.C. United – Still ugly. No better way to put it than that but I do think United fans have to be patient with a turn around there.

New England Revolution – This team should be better than what that score line suggested in Houston but boy do they lack a certain punch in the midfield.

Chicago Fire – Tough loss on the road to open the season up but more and more I think Fire fans may be in for a long ride this year.
