- David Beckham, Miami Expansion, MLS Expansion
It appears that David Beckham and Miami will soon have a MLS team to call their own again.
The Miami Herald reported over the weekend that Beckham is exercising his clause to own a MLS franchise and a press conference has been called for this Wednesday with local officials and MLS commissioner Don Garber.
He is in negotiations with Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the commission to lease county-owned land for a 25,000-seat stadium. His preferred site is a waterfront lot on the southwest corner of PortMiami.
MLS has not yet awarded Miami a team because a stadium plan is still pending, but all indications are a deal will be reached sometime in the next few months, at which point a Miami team could become a reality.
The question will certainly be asked, but I would imagine this club will begin play in 2016 with 2017 being the second option if the stadium situation causes issues.
