- David Beckham, Features, Miami Expansion, MLS Expansion
Good find by the Miami Herald today that suggest the MLS expansion bid lead by David Beckham and his group have selected a stadium location site at PortMiami.
According to the report, the group has approached Miami-Dade County to ask if it would consider allowing a stadium on the seaport’s southwest corner.
A 25-year master plan for the debt-laden port envisions revamping its southwest corner with commercial development to bring in revenue, including a hotel, an office complex and a harbor for mega-yachts facing downtown’s Bayside Marketplace.
Some 25 acres could be available on that Dodge Island site, Iglesias said — enough for a 25,000-seat stadium with expandable seating for different events as well as the mega-yacht marina and perhaps waterfront promenade. Limited parking could be built underground, as in the Miami Heat’s AmericanAirlines Arena, but it’s unclear how much more parking space would be available.
Apparently the biggest concern for this location could end up being traffic. There are only two ways to get onto the island: from Port Boulevard on Northeast 6th Street and the new Port Tunnel, which is scheduled to open next year.
