The Miami Herald’s Michelle Kaufman, a veteran soccer writer reported via Twitter this evening that David Beckham is in town scouting potential stadium sites.

Wheels are in motion folks, I repeat wheels are indeed in motion.

A little background on this development. If you missed it last week, Kaufman had a solid story on whether or not Beckham and his group have enough power to really make this thing work in Miami.

Is Beckham’s star power enough to turn the fickle South Florida sports market into a passionate MLS audience? Will Miami’s sophisticated soccer-savvy fans, who lead the nation in TV ratings for World Cups and European league matches, ever care as much about Real Salt Lake as they do Real Madrid? FC Barcelona drew 71,000 at Sun Life Stadium for an exhibition match against Chivas Guadalajara last summer. But will those same fans (some might call them soccer snobs) show up to watch a Miami MLS team play FC Dallas?

Tough questions we’ve all been asking since day one here. Well, since the Miami Fusion departed from MLS a decade ago really. Fans in Miami always seem to say they are ready for another shot at things but time will tell if they really are.

We know Beckham and his group want a Miami team in a new stadium, in the urban core of the city. Not a suburb, not in a college stadium, a brand spanking new one. This site had a few suggestions as to where that stadium could end up being after today’s scouting session.

This puppy will get more details sooner rather than later with Beckham in Miami. I would imagine this expansion bid will have some fascinating details released in the coming weeks, I’m almost sure of it. It is only a matter of time before the league begins to discuss it publicly too, I would also imagine by MLS Cup we’ll have a solid foundation of facts regarding this deal and where it might go from here.
