- David Beckham, Features, Miami Expansion, MLS Expansion
Just as Orlando got all their ducks in a row regarding their stadium plans last week, an announcement should come soon for a MLS expansion team in Miami.
World Soccer Talk is reporting today that a David Beckham-lead Miami team could be announced by the end of the year.
My sources indicate it will be announced either in December at MLS Cup or in January at the Superdraft/NSCAA Convention. Either way, Orlando City will have been announced as moving from USL PRO to MLS by that time creating an instant Florida derby in the American top flight.
WST also states that the team could start anytime between 2015 and 2017. My sources have indicated to me that the next expansion team that isn’t Orlando would most likely begin in 2016.
The Orlando expansion announcement is expected to take play on or around MLS Cup this year. Miami coming in a couple weeks later seems to make sense given how expansion announcements have gone in the past.
We’ve been tracking the Miami story for a while now and will continue to do so.
