- 2014 World Cup
Go ahead and mark December 6 as an important day on the calendar. Not only will be around the time of this year’s MLS Cup but it will mark the day that we learn which countries go in the eight World Cup groups for next year’s tournament in Brazil.
We know pot 1 already as the top seeds are set. The October edition of the FIFA World Rankings were released on Thursday and the top seven teams on the list will be joining Brazil in Pot 1 when the World Cup draw takes place on December 6 in Bahia.
Spain (No. 1), Germany (No. 2), Argentina (No. 3), Colombia (No. 4), Belgium (No. 5), Uruguay (No. 6) and Switzerland (No. 7) are the other seven nations that will join the hosts as top seeds.
But there’s one catch. If Uruguay do not advance to the 2014 World Cup after their intercontinental playoff against Jordan (ranked No. 70) in November, the Netherlands (No. 8) would take their spot.
As much as I want to see the best teams in the tournament, I think we would all be fine if Jordan claimed that massive upset over Uruguay.
The three CONCACAF teams and the four Asian teams will likely be in a pot together again. Since Mexico and New Zealand play one another in the playoff next month, the winner will most likely be placed in that group. If anything we could see the US get a nice group or another group of death.
