The idea has been talked about for weeks, if not months now by Sepp Blatter and other members of FIFA. But now it is on record by Blatter that he wants to move the 2022 FIFA World Cup that will be held in the Middle East country of Qatar in the winter time.

“The World Cup in Qatar can only take place in the winter,” he told Sky Sport Germany after a recent trip to the Middle East. “And the executive committee is sure to follow me. In this heat, you cannot play in the summer. And we have to consider the players.

“I was just in the Middle East, in Jordan, Palestine and Israel. I have felt the heat in these countries and it’s not as hot there as it is in Qatar. It’s possible to air-condition a stadium, but not an entire country.”

This will be a sticky subject for nearly everyone. Most will be happy to see the tournament move away from the desert summer heat that would see most game-time temperatures in the triple digits. But on the flip side most European countries will not be thrilled with this news as it will break up their seasons.

Some have even suggested that a seasonal rescheduling will bring Qatar’s hosting rights into question, with the entire bidding process. The United States lost their big to host the 2022 World Cup to Qatar and they had a bid that was for a summer World Cup.

Blatter says there is still time to move it. Oh boy.
