This seems to be an annual thing now days in Major League Soccer.

MLS has changed the top tiebreaker for the end of the 2013 regular season to most wins, according to the latest media guide. This was spotted by Seattle Times’ writer Josh Mayers.

The order to break ties goes as follows…

1. Most wins
2. Goals for
3. Goal differential
4. Fewest disciplinary points
5. Road goals
6. Road goal differential
7. Home goals
8. Home goal differential
9. Coin toss (two teams), drawing of lots (three or more)

Last year the tiebreaker was mostly the same with Goals For being the top tiebreaker. Goals are still a premium as they were in 2012 but now it will be equally as important to get the three points. Had this been in effect last year, we would have see the New York Red Bulls and the Chicago Fire flipped in the standings. That could have made a big difference in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
