The new MLS season is right around the corner. Just like with every year, there are a fresh crop of rookies that hope to make their impact on the new year. Like most years it make take a little while for some rookies to break into their lineups while others may get their shot earlier in the year.
While some are predicting their Rookie of the Year winners already, I’ll save mine for later this week. Until then, I wanted to point out a few rookies that I think will have a big impact on this season.
Andrew Ferrell (New England) – The first overall pick should always have a big impact on his first year. We saw some out of last year’s number one Andrew Wenger in Montreal but I see Ferrell having a bigger impact in his rookie year than Wenger did. Ferrell will be tasked with helping repair a pretty broken defense in New England. The talent has been there with guys like AJ Soares and Kevin Alston being big parts in the defense in recent years but it always seemed as though they were missing an element. I believe Ferrell is that missing element or link that the Revs have been needing in their defense.
Kyle Bekker (Toronto FC) – I see big things out of Bekker in Toronto. Just the few minutes I’ve seen of him with the club since the combine give me reason to have high hopes on this kid. He’s also done well with Canada in some friendlies as well. If Ryan Nelson can use him to his best ability in the attack, he could be a good pick down the road for the ROY award.
Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy) – If I had to select one Homegrown player to this list, it would have to be Zardes. He’s going to miss some time to start the season due to a surgery but once he get healthy, I see him having a big impact on the Galaxy this season. He’s big, skilled and ready for MLS. I wouldn’t be shocked if he lead rookies in scoring.
Mikey Lopez (Sporting KC) – Some may not be high on Lopez, I certainly wasn’t at the SuperDraft. But I love him being with Sporting KC and Peter Vermes. One thing we know from the last few years is that Vermes always seems to find ways to get a ton out of younger players. He won’t put up any glaring stat figures but he could be a guy that helps get SKC over the top later on this season.
