You have to enjoy this time of year when rumors start swirling around. This one may be one of the biggest of the day, and I’m not even sitting at noon here in Dallas.

Soccer By Ives is reporting that the Portland Timbers could be lining up to get US National Team midfielder Mix Diskerud. Currently at Norwegian side Rosenborg, Diskerud would be re-united with Porter, who coached him with the U.S. Under-23 national team.

Diskerud will have to go through the league’s allocation process due to his national team status. Portland made a move to move up the boards in the allocation yesterday with Chivas. I’d imagine in their deal with Toronto yesterday the Reds made a pinky swear not to pick anyone up before them so they could sign someone like Diskerud.

This deal is far from over though, but it certainly speaks to how respected Porter is as a coach. It is also a good sign for the league if he does sign, it shows that they can attract young Americans to come here and play rather than go straight to Europe.

Diskerud is only 22-years old and would certainly be a big get for the Timbers. I do wonder if getting him will mean Darlington Nagbe will be moving up the pitch a bit into a forward position, instead of a central attacking midfield role that he was in during the 2012 season. More than likely he’ll spend more time on the wide area as that’s where Porter used him in college.
