EDIT: This deal is now official. Josus Martinez was also apart of this deal and will go to New York along with allocation money for Le Toux.
Stealing a small page out of the NBA’s playbook, two MLS teams have reportedly done a sign-and-trade deal today.
Ives Galercep is reporting that the New York Red Bulls re-signed forward Sebastien Le Toux earlier today and have now completed a trade with the Philadelphia Union for him. The Red Bulls have received allocation money in return.
Le Toux returns to the Union after spending time with the Vancouver Whitecaps and Red Bulls in 2012. Traded from the Union to the Whitecaps for allocation money at the start of the 2011 season.
The Frenchman scored 25 goals in the two years he spent in Philadelphia between 2010 and 2011.
This was a move that many expected to happen this winter. Philadelphia has been wanting to get Le Toux back and the sign-and-trade scenario was the only easy way it would happen given Le Toux’s expired contract. New York gets some allocation in return to help offset some of the recent trades that they have made this past week.
I’d imagine this isn’t the only move that the Red Bulls have up their sleeves going here this week. I still expect Kenny Cooper to be traded as well before long.
