Timbers Deal Kimura And Land A Home Grown

Boy this deal got a lot more interesting.

The Portland Timbers today have acquired allocation money and the MLS Homegrown rights for defender Bryan Gallego from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for defender Kosuke Kimura and Portland’s natural second-round pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.

Gallego was a sophomore at Akron playing under new Timbers’ coach Caleb Porter.

So yes, Portland snagged a big deal here by getting allocation money for Kimura and getting HGP rights to a pretty decent player like Gallego. As far as I know this is the first time we’ve seen a HGP’s rights traded before the player has signed with the league. Boy, you gotta love the league allowing little things like this.

New York now has a pick in the draft. Before they had traded away all of their natural picks.

The offseason is fully underway folks.
