David Beckham will be playing his final game in a LA Galaxy uniform at MLS Cup. Yes, you read that correctly, the era of Beckham is coming to an end in MLS.

Let that sink in for a moment.
”I’ve had an incredibly special time playing for the LA Galaxy, however, I wanted to experience one last challenge before the end of my playing career,” Beckham said. “I don’t see this as the end of my relationship with the league as my ambition is to be part of the ownership structure in the future.”
While we don’t know Beckham’s next move, of even if there will be a move at all, we do know that this is the final capture in his MLS playing days.

There has been lots of talk of move to Australia, where the A-League is looking for a boost, however brief, Beckham would give. A 10-game deal with Melbourne Heart has been mentioned.

The sentimental choice would be a move back to England in January to finish his career.

No matter what he does it won’t be for a long-term given how he has stated on numerous occasions that he does not want to uproot his kids in LA. He loves it there, just like he loves living in America.

The amount of impact that Beckham has had on this league in his six years with the Galaxy is almost unmeasurable. Since he signed with LA in 2007, it has been nothing but a wild and crazy ride. From struggles at first with books about his complicatedness, to reaching a MLS Cup in 2009 only to be upended in penalty kicks by Real Salt Lake, to finally reaching the top of the MLS mountain last season with a title and Supporters’ Shield.

Beckham has nearly done it all in MLS and for MLS. The only thing he hasn’t won is a MVP-type trophy.

MLS released this page with his stats during his time in MLS. I think they paint a pretty picture of his time with the league.

• Seasons in MLS: 6 (2007-2012)
• MLS Cup titles: 1 (2011)
• MLS Cup finals: 3 (2009, 2011, 2012)
• Supporters’ Shield titles: 2 (2010, 2011)
• MLS playoff berths: 4 (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012)
• Regular season matches played: 98 of 176 (55.68 percent of matches / 91 starts)
• Regular season goals: 18 (5 game-winners)
• Regular season multi-goal games: 2 (at RSL on May 3, 2008 and at Portland on July 14, 2012)
• Regular season assists: 40
• Regular season red cards: 1 (vs. Seattle – Aug. 15, 2009 for foul on Peter Vagenas)
• Total playoff matches: 16
• Total playoff goals: 0
• Total playoff assists: 8
• Most goals in an MLS season: 7 goals (2012)
• Most assists in an MLS season: 15 (2011)
• Most goals scored against: Portland (3)
• Stadium to see most Beckham goals: The Home Depot Center (10 of 18)
• LA Galaxy debut: July 21, 2007 vs. Chelsea
• MLS debut: August 9, 2007 at D.C. United
• 1st Galaxy goal: August 15, 2007 vs. D.C. United (Superliga)
• MLS Player of the Week awards: 2 (Week 2 and Week 6 in 2008)
• MLS All-Star appearances: 2 (2008, 2011, 2012)
• MLS Best XI: 1 (2011)
• Personal Honors: 2011 MLS Comeback Player of the Year
• Offseason loans: 2 (AC Milan in 2009 and 2010)

So 18 goals and 40 assists later, come December 1 it will be the last hour and a half of his MLS time.

Whether it be a move to England, down under, or even to the owners box of some future MLS club. Beckham’s impact is still truly immeasurable for MLS.

The best thing we can say though is that losing Beckham is not the end of the world for MLS. Three years ago it may have been but right now, MLS is in a good place to move forward without him as their big star. They have plenty of other players to showcase and will continue to do so. Beckham just gave them the proper platform to showcase big talent in the right way.

Just as he’s helped the league to be exposed through out the world, they (MLS) couldn’t ask for a better time to announce this. It should increase the viewership of the final Saturday.
