As expected, just like the sun rising each day, New York announced today that manager Hans Backe would not return to the club in 2013.

It was a short and sweet message too.

“We want to thank Hans for his work over the past three years and wish him the best of luck in the future,” said Global Sporting Director of Red Bull Soccer Gerard Houllier.

Mike Petke will coach the club on an interim basis.

Assistant coach Jan Halvor Halvorsen’s contract was also not extended.

No one is surprised by this news and nor should anyone be. He was a decent coach that just couldn’t get all the right pieces to work properly in New York. It wasn’t a secret that his days were numbered and many had wondered that even had New York won a MLS Cup this season if he’d be back then. My gut tells me he wouldn’t have been.

New York now moves on after Backe. Where they move on to is a huge question because what they’ve always done just hasn’t worked. They need some new blood for sure but they also need a culture change in that front office that trickles down onto the field. I’m just not sure it will happen anytime soon.
