So many possibilities for only one week’s worth of games left. The Eastern Conference playoff race is done but the seeding will be sorted out this week.
Two teams are battling for first place, while all the other spots are totally up for grabs.
Sporting Kansas City can finish: East 1, East 2
D.C. United can finish: East 1, East 2, East 3, East 4
Chicago Fire can finish: East 2, East 3, East 4, East 5
New York Red Bulls can finish: East 3, East 4, East 5
Houston Dynamo can finish: East 3, East 4, East 5
The bottom four teams in that list are trying to avoid the knockout round game. No one wants to deal with an extra game at this point in this season, especially if it is a road game.
D.C. has to travel to Chicago this week while Philadelphia holds the keys for both Sporting KC and New York. Should SKC win their game against Philadelphia this Wednesday, they’ll lock up the Eastern crown. New York will hope to get a road win in Philadelphia this weekend to keep them out of the knockout round.
Anything can happen this week, let’s put it that way.
Out West it is a little clearer thankfully.
San Jose has obviously locked up the top seed being the Supporters’ Shield winners. The LA Galaxy will host the Vancouver Whitecaps in the knockout round.
The only thing left to be determined is who gets home field advantage between Seattle and Real Salt Lake. Both teams are tied at 56 points but Seattle holds the edge in the tiebreakers due to number of goals scored.
RSL hosts Vancouver this weekend while Seattle has a date on the road against the LA Galaxy. My money is on RSL taking the two seed with those games.
