- Designated Player, Federico Higuain
It has been a busy afternoon in Major League Soccer.
The Columbus Crew announced today that it has acquired forward Federico Higuain from Club Atletico Colón of Argentina’s Primera Division. Higuain becomes the third Designated Player in club history.
Higuain’s younger brother Gonzalo is one of the top strikers at Real Madrid and Argentina’s National Team.
The 27-year-old forward joins the Crew after spending the last two seasons with Colón where he tallied 10 goals in 62 appearances.
Higuain will be available for selection upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and work visa.
The Crew have been in desperate need of a big time striker and if Higuain can be anywhere near the level of talent of the last big Argentine that they signed (Guillermo Barros Schelotto), then they could easily make this playoff race interesting in the Eastern Conference. Higuain has a lot of pressure on his shoulders to be the big scorer for the Crew.
