File this under “we’ve heard this before”.
New York Red Bulls manager Hans Backe made a sweeping declaration yesterday to reporters while in Mexico. He plans to go all-in this season.
“I say we should go for it all: the Open Cup, the Shield, the MLS Cup,” Backe told reporters in a conference call on Thursday from Mexico, where the Red Bulls are training. “We have a very good squad this year.”
Sounds nice right? Remember last year when it was Supporters’ Shield or bust? Yeah that didn’t pan out too well for the Red Bulls.
New York has been addressing their depth concerns by signing players like Icelandic U-21 Victor Pálsson. Yes another Scandinavian/Nordic-type player for Backe.
I won’t go too far into how the Red Bulls are looking for the upcoming season but I do believe they will be in the running for at least the Eastern Conference crown again. It does however all come down to chemistry with this bunch. One big mishap and I expect another repeat of 2011.
I will say this, at least Backe has been given a chance to do things his way in New York. He’s already lasted longer than nearly every other manager in NY history. It will be a big statement year for him and his Red Bulls.
