The on and off again story of former US International Lee Nguyen to Major League Soccer can finally take a rest, he has signed with the league. The 25-year old midfielder declared this news over the weekend via his Twitter feed.
Nguyen has played primarily attacking positions and scored 14 goals in 29 V-League matches.
An article on MLSSoccer.com said that Nguyen’s team would be decided by weighted lottery – an allocation process by which interested MLS teams are assigned a percentage chance of acquiring the player based on their 30 previous games played – with teams with a worse performance given a better chance of acquiring that player.
It’s not clear when the lottery will be held or who will be participating in it.
I can’t imagine a whole lot of teams going for him in this lottery. He came comes to signing with Dallas a year or so ago but the talks died down over money. We’ll have to wait and see who is interested and where they fall. More than likely you’ll at least see the Montreal Impact involved and maybe even someone like the Portland Timbers. Outside of that I can’t even begin to give you any other guesses.
Nguyen has been out of the US soccer scene for a while now (2007 or so), so predicting how he’ll do here in MLS will be tough as well. Most weighted lottery players that come into the league end up doing very little, so keep that in mind. Only a few have panned out.
