MLS Playoff Race: Sounders, RSL Close; Others On Verge Of Elimination

This could be a fun week in Major League Soccer. Two clubs could clinch playoff tickets while three others could be eliminated all together.

Seattle Sounders FC will clinch a berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs IF:

  • Seattle defeats or ties host Vancouver on Saturday OR
  • Seattle loses to Vancouver AND
    • Two of the following occur: Houston ties or loses; Colorado loses, Portland loses

Real Salt Lake will clinch a berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs IF:

  • RSL defeats host New York on Wednesday AND
    • Houston ties or loses OR Colorado loses
  • OR RSL defeats host D.C. United on Saturday AND
    • Houston ties or loses AND Colorado loses
  • OR RSL fails to win both games AND
    • Portland loses twice this week AND Houston loses

Vancouver Whitecaps FC will be eliminated from contention for the MLS Cup Playoffs IF:

  • Vancouver loses to Seattle OR
  • Vancouver ties Seattle AND
    • New York wins (once) OR Portland wins (once) OR D.C. United wins both games this week
  • Vancouver defeats Seattle AND
    • Three of the following occur: Philadelphia wins AND Houston wins; and New York wins AND ties OR Portland wins AND ties

New England Revolution will be eliminated from contention for the MLS Cup Playoffs IF:

  • New England loses at Chicago on Sunday AND
    • Three of the following occur: Philadelphia ties or wins; Houston ties or wins; New York wins AND ties; Portland wins AND ties

Toronto FC will be eliminated from contention for the MLS Cup Playoffs IF:

  • Toronto loses at Chivas USA on Saturday AND
    • Three of the following occur: Philadelphia ties or wins; Houston ties or wins; New York wins AND ties; Portland wins AND ties
