- 2011 MLS Season, 2011 Season Predictions, 2011 Week 13
Forgive me for the lack of posts in the last day or so. I’ve been busy getting ready for my pending vacation this weekend to Colorado. I’ve had a lot of outside of day job and blogging to attend to here. Anyways, time to get down to brass tax and get to these weekend predictions.
With loads of games this weekend starting tonight, there will be plenty of quality MLS soccer to enjoy.
New England Revolution at New York Red Bulls: At some point the Red Bulls will have to step up and be what we saw out of them in April when they were dominant for a few weeks straight. I know the Gold Cup took over their roster and left them with some scraps but they do have quality depth. New England on the other hand just does not have the same pieces to deal with the Red Bulls’ attack. I do think this one will be open in the midfield and the Revs will apply better pressure in this one than what we saw out of them in Dallas last week but New York finds a way to win.
WVH Prediction: New York 2, New England 1
Real Salt Lake at Philadelphia Union: Huge match here, one of the bigger ones of the weekend. I’ll have something up about how important this one is to Philadelphia later today over at SBNation (Update: here ya go, my post on the Union). RSL dropped some points in Columbus back on Wednesday and I think they rebound enough to get a draw in this one. Should be fun though.
WVH Prediction: Philadelphia 1, RSL 1
San Jose Earthquakes at D.C. United: We’ve seen some big improvements out of Frank Yallop’s team in recent weeks and Ben Olsen’s United haven’t been half bad as of late either. Both have impressive unbeaten runs going on right now and I think that will continue after this one is over for each as well.
WVH Prediction: DC 1, SJ 1
Chivas USA at Houston Dynamo: One of the more underrated matches of the weekend I think. Chivas hopes to continue pressing forward in the West while the Dynamo needs three points to remain a contender in the East. If Brad Davis gets loose in this game then expect the Dynamo to get three points. If not, a draw seems more likely than a Chivas win to me at this point. I’m going with the home side though in this one. They gotta break out of their funk eventually here.
WVH Prediction: Houston 1, Chivas 0
Colorado Rapids at Portland Timbers: I want to pick Portland, I really do. The thing is that now that the luster of their home record is gone with the loss to D.C. a couple weeks ago, you have to wonder where this club is heading here. The Rapids are riding a weird six-game draw streak into this one and I kind of see it pushing to seven. Portland has to come out early and get a goal to set the tone of this game, if not Colorado will hang in there and see points.
WVH Prediction: Portland 1, Colorado 1
Toronto FC at LA Galaxy: While normally I’d write this one off in a heartbeat since Toronto is traveling so far to play this one and LA is usually so good at home. But without Landon Donovan and Donovan Ricketts for LA I kind of wonder where this one will go. LA did not look good at all against DC last week and TFC is improving here even though they seem to take a step forward at times then two steps back. I wonder if this is a two-step back game for TFC though.
WVH Prediction: LA 2, Toronto 1
Vancouver Whitecaps at Seattle Sounders FC: The other Cascadia Cup rivalry here. This one should be fun but let’s not forget that Vancouver is riding a 13-game winless streak here. I doubt that ends this weekend in Seattle with the Sounders looking to apply pressure on LA and Dallas in the West.
WVH Prediction: Seattle 2, Vancouver 0
Chicago Fire at Columbus Crew: Both clubs playing their second game this week but the Crew have at least an extra day to rest and both of their games this week were at home. Chicago isn’t so lucky with yet another road game this week. I think they looked decent last night in KC but Columbus may have a bit of an edge to their play right now and I think Jeff Cunningham gets to finally tie that all-time scoring record this weekend.
WVH Prediction: Columbus 2, Chicago 1
Sporting Kansas City at FC Dallas: I hate saying it but its my first Dallas home game that I’ll miss all year. I wrote earlier on Big D Soccer about what Dallas needs to do to win this game. They’ll have to use that mental toughness to pull it out and given how KC didn’t get three points in their home debut last night I think Dallas should take them.
WVH Prediction: Dallas 2, KC 0
