Either history will be made tonight for Real Salt Lake or a bitter sting of defeat will happen. RSL takes the weight of all of Major League Soccer and US Soccer for that matter in to the Monster’s Cave (or Ricardo Saprissa Stadium) down in San Jose, Costa Rica, as they face off against Saprissa tonight in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinal second leg.
RSL holds a nice 2-0 lead going into the match but as we know a 2-0 lead in soccer is the hardest to hold on to.
One thing is certain, RSL won’t be fazed by any distractions at Saprissa tonight. The club is mentally tougher than most clubs in MLS and they have the depth and talent to get the job done. Guys like Nick Rimando and Kyle Beckerman provide the leadership that they need to succeed down there while having a former Saprissa player in Alvaro Saborio definitely doesn’t hurt one bit.
What I like about RSL for matches like this is the fact that they rely on the entire team to get the job done. Tonight should be no different. All RSL needs to do is hold on to the slim lead that they have and cash their ticket to the CCL championship. With the away goal rules, they could even grab a goal and hope their defense can withstand the pressure of Saprissa.
I won’t go into some long winded preview of the game tonight as I’ll be honest, I know very little of Saprissa outside of what I saw out of them against RSL in the first leg of this series a couple weeks ago. I’m mainly here as a fan of the league wanting to root on one of it’s clubs in a regional tournament. I firmly believe tonight is a night that MLS fans need to put their hate (if they have any) aside for RSL and jump on the bandwagon and root them on.
Let’s all hope by the end of this day, RSL will be holding the MLS banner up sky-high in the CCL Championship game. It’s one step more to glory for Jason Kreis’ club.
Will you be watching? Do you think RSL will advance tonight? Let’s hear your thoughts on tonight’s match.
