- Chad Ochocinco
For some reason I’ve kept myself from discussing this story, mainly because I believe I know how it will end. NFL star wide receiver Chad Ochocinco will begin his tryout today with Sporting Kansas City. Ochocinco has stated for years that he is a big soccer fan and has always wanted to play at a high level in the sport. He just happened to give up on the game back in high school (or maybe middle school) when he realized he could go further with football.
In a way I give credit to Ochocino for wanting to do this while the status of his league is pending due to a potential lockout. It is a way for him to stay fit during his offseason and for that I have no real issue with it. Plus, you can’t blame a guy for going for a childhood dream of his.
That being said, I’m not a huge fan of the timing of the tryout. Doing a trial like this right after the season starts doesn’t make too much sense but maybe this is a better time to do it than say at the start of training camp or towards the middle of the summer. I don’t know really, the timing seems off to me but I could be alone in that thought.
Let’s be honest for a moment here and say there is no way he’ll actually make the team. I don’t think Sporting Kansas City is that desperate for attention that they’ll actually sign the guy. Peter Vermes needs help elsewhere on the field and signing a guy that probably won’t do a whole lot for the club isn’t going to work long term.
At most this tryout gets Sporting and MLS for that matter on SportsCenter for a minute or two, and folks get a chuckle out of it. Sporting will be streaming the tryout live on its Web site, although it is closed to the public in Kansas City.
It is an unique trial. Nothing more to it than that.
What do you think of this publicity for SKC and MLS? Like this move by the club to bring in athlete like Ochocinco?
